Chapter 27
Randi lay motionless in a ball in one of the corners of the cabin. it was soon to be dawn and she hadn't slept very well. Mostly for the fact that Michael hadn't left her alone much of the night. she just hoped that there were no bruises on her to show for it.
The other reason was that she could feel what was happening to Edward. Not feel him like normal, but feel the amount of power that had been driven into him. Now she could feel Edward in the back of her mind. A timy hum to let herknow he was still alive. She wondered, if he could feel her, too.
Rose had left earlier in the hour. She didn't really care where she was going. Randi hoped she died soon. Michael was asleep on the bed on the other side of the room. his sides had been bandaged up from where Rose had stabbed him. Randi wished she could move her body enough to strangle him while he slept.
Whatever Michael had injected her with was still in her system enough to keep her from moving that much, but she could see clearly and didn't feel like throwing up. She knew she had to get out of the house one way or another. Randi didn't know how long Rose would be gone so whatever she did, it needed to be soon.
Randi lay there for a few minutes before she attempted to sit up. Her head swam from the movement and had to lean against the wall until the moment passed. Using the wall to steady her, Randi carefully and slowly stood up. Her walk was not graceful. She swayed side to side and kept her hand on the wall so she could catch herself if she stumbled.
Michael stirred on the bed and Randi froze. The last thing she needed was to get caught by him. She remained still until she was sure that he wasn't going to wake up, then headed towards the front room. The door wasn't that far away from her. She could make it if she didn't fall. One foot in front of the other. That's all she had to remember. Take one step at a time and don't rush it. She was a few feet from the door when it opened. Rose gasped at seeing her stand there.
"What do you think you're doing?" She asked appalled.
"Getting caught apparently." Randi said sarcastically. She was so tired and just wanted to go home. She had said it quietly, she did not want Michael waking up.
"You have alot of guts trying to escape."
"You'd be a good person if you let me go." Randi told her.
"I would, but why would I want to do that?" Rose asked.
"Do you honestly tink what he's doing is right? He's kidnapped and raped me. Why do you go along with him?" Rose was silent for so long that Randi didn't think that she was going to answer. Rose turned her eyes away.
"Because I can't get away." Randi walked out the door and stood next to her.
"Then leave with me. We can both get away." A shot rang out from the house. Rose fell to the ground, a bullet in her chest. Randi screamed and feel from the sudden sound combined with already beind dizzy. Michael stood in the living room with a rifle in his hand.
"There's no one to stop me now." he said walking outside. He grabbed a handful of her hair and tried to jerk her up. Randi used all her strength and punched him as hard as she could in the groin. His eyes rolled back in his head and he hunched over in pain. She scrambled back as quickly as she could to get away from him. She came to her feet and started running. Her vision was blurred but she didn't care. She had to get away. Pain erupted in the back of her head. She collapsed back to the ground feeling hot liquid spill down her neck.
Michael walked towards her and reloaded.
It was dark. Dark enough that she couldn't see. But she could smell it. The dead flesh of a body, the smell of earth. It was all around her.
Randi moved her arms. What was she in? It was difficult to move, like she was covered in dir. Dirt. Randi began to freak. She clawed at the dirt above her head. Reaching for anything, something to free her. Her hands touched air. She sat up in the dirt and tried to pull herself ouf of the grave she had been left in.
When her head finally broke free she gasped for air and coughed out dirt. She drug herself out of the ground and lay on the ground. Dirt was caked into her clothes and hair. What the hell was she doing in the middle of the woods? She couldn't remember. Couldn't remember anything. That made her panic. She couldn't remember how she had gotten in the woods. Nothing. All she pick from the blackness inside her head was two things. She knew that her name was Miranda and that she was seventeen years old. The other thing she could remember was a face. A man, that his name was Edward and he meant something to her. She only knew that because everything she focused on his face, a warmth spread through her body. That had to mean he meant something to her, right?
Randi picked herself up and looked around. She was surrounded by trees. It had to be close to six, seven o'clock. It was starting to get dark but she had maybe an hour left before that happened. Randi began to walk.
She didn't even know where she was going. All she knew was that she couldn't stay here. It wasn't until she heard the faint crying of a baby that she began to run. She ran as though she knew the lay of the forest. It was almost as if thing smoved out of her way. It was weird. Then she saw it.
A massacre had taken place. There had to be at least twenty people ripped apart and dead in the clearing before her. Randi choked back a scream. She didn't know if anyone was left alive but the crying child she couldn't see.
She walked farther into the clearing. There was something strange and familiar about this forest. Like she'd been in it before, a long time ago.
A small stone wall outlined the clearing she was in. That was odd. The sound of the baby became louded and Randi walked faster. That's when she seen him. A man with dull blue eyes and blood stained brown hair was leaning against the far wall. His stomach had been ripped open, his intestines spilling out of his body. In his arms was a baby wrapped in a blanket. Randi rushed over to him and knelt beside him. She wasn't sure what she could do for the man. She reached out to take the baby from him, but the man growled at her. Randi jerked her hands back.
"I'm not going to hurt him. I'm trying to help you both." Randi told him calmly.
"I'll be fine...come nightfall." He told her. He turned his head to look at her. His brows furrowed. Her face, he knew her. He had saved her seven years ago when she had gotten seperated from her parents on vacation. A full circle. If he lived through this, he was going to have to find her. Tell her about her past, what she could do.
"No you're not. You need-" the man cut her off.
"Take Dylan. Get him out of here." he said, giving him to her.
"But I don't know where to go." Randi said a little scared. "I can't remember anything."
"Yes you can. Get out of his forest and go where your instincts tell you. I'll find you before you get there." His words didn't make sense. What was he talking about? "Run." he said
"What?" He looked up at the sky. The moon had risen. His face filled with pain.
"Run! Now!" he growled at her. Randi was too scared to hesitate. She got up and ran. "Don't look back!" she heard him yell. Randi held Dylan tight against her as the sound of howls came behind her.
She ran, and ran. She ran until dawn started to rise in the east. rnadi didn't know she had run that long or how she wasn't exhausted. It should have been impossible to run like that. She was surrounded by a thick forest of pine trees, and mountains in the distance. There was even a little snow on the ground. A dramatic change from earlier. She slowed down to a walk. She was so lost. Didn't have a clue as to where she was. To top it off she was thirsty beyond belief. Not hungry but thirsty.
Dylan had fallen asleep while Randi had been running. She knew he would be hungry when he woke up. Randi was ready to give up. There was no way she was going to find her way out. That's when she heard it. The faint hum of tires on pavement. Randi started to run again. She ran until she came to the middle of the road. She turned towards the car. It was too close, wouldn't stop in time. Randi put a hand over Dylan's head and turned her back and waited. Those few seconds lasted an eternity.
Tires screamed on the road. A horn sounded. The front of the car caught Randi's legs and lower back. She rolled up on the windshield, busting it. Randi flew off the top of the car and hit the pavement and rolled. The car came to a stop twenty feet in front of her. She had lived and felt no pain. Dylan was fine, only crying.
"Oh, my God!" a man said running towards her. "Are you alirhgt? I didn't see you in time." Randi nodded.
"Yeah, I'm okay." She said. Rnadi held Dylan tight against her. The man no realized that she had a baby and his eyes grew wide.
"Jesus, you need to go to the hospital." he told her.
"No, I'm fine."
"But Miss, you're bleeding." Randi looked at him confused. How could she be bleeding? She didn't feel any pain. "Your head's cut open. And you have glass in your side." Randi looked down. He was right. She grabbed it and pulled it out effortlessly. the man pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her. Randi pressed it to her forehead.
"I just need some rest." she told hi m.
"Come on then. I live in Kalispell. It's not that far. It's not smart going into Glacier Park alone and at night."
"I know that now." the man helped her to stand.
"What's your name, Miss? he asked.
"Randi. I don't remember anything else."
"My name's Robert Dawson. I'll take you to see my wife, she'll be to get you cleaned up." Randi nodded. Robert was nice. But he seemed out of place to her, like he should be in the south.
