Unhappiness

Chapter 28 – Unhappiness

Tiera pulled open the front door and was amazed to come face to face with her ex-boyfriend. Daniel smiled in at her and she could not help but invite him in. “No one’s here right now,” she explained, “and if my mom finds out I had a boy in the house while she was gone she’ll kill me. So, not to be rude, but make it fast.”

Daniel closed the door behind him, stepped up to Tiera, wrapping his hand thickly in her hair and pulling her close, pressing in on her for a kiss that had her toes curling. Tiera kissed him back amazed at her need to have someone this close to her. He pushed her against the closed door and held her tight for a while, continuing to kiss her deeply, both of them holding their breath as they explored before she started to pull away. “I want you back,” he whispered hoarsely to her. “I miss you, I miss being inside of you.”

“That’s what you really miss,” Tiera snapped at him, trying to push him away. “All you want from me is sex. Is Bliss not giving it to you enough?”

“She’s not at all,” Daniel complained, gripping Tiera and trying to pull her back as she began to walk away from him. “And you and I were so good together in that department, then you suddenly left me.”

“There was no suddenness about it,” Tiera smacked, looking down at the couch for comfort, afraid to look at Daniel. “You gave me little choice.”

“Yeah,” Daniel admitted, looking at the floor, “but it was because I was scared. I’m too young for that kind of responsibility, I thought you were doing the best thing for you, and for me, and for the baby. Getting rid of it would have been the best thing, and look, in the end, you did.”

“Because I had no support!” Tiera screamed at him. “You told me to get rid of it, you would not stay with someone who had a baby, you couldn’t ruin your life and career that way. So I told you it was the end, I told you we should break up, because that was what you had made me do. I was going to do it, I had to, I couldn’t keep it, and my mom couldn’t know, but… you gave me no choice, you didn’t even ask me what I wanted.”

Daniel shrugged, though Tiera could not see it with her back to him. “I know what I did was wrong,” he admitted, “but I didn’t know what else to do. I was scared, and that’s behind us now. Now you and I can be together and I can stop this relationship with Bliss.”

Tiera turned on Daniel, her anger at its peak. “Do you love anyone, or are you just worried about your blue balls?” she asked of him, stepping further away from him as he took one step closer in the room.

“I love you,” he lied, and Tiera, not at all being the stupid girl he made her out to be, did not believe his lie for an instant. She had once, that was her mistake, but she would not fall for that line again.

“Leave, Daniel,” Tiera snapped at him. “It was a mistake that you and I even remained friends. If you try this again I will tell Bliss that you are cheating on her, and you would not want to ruin your perfect little reputation, would you?” She was stronger than normal with her back turned. If she could remain with him at her back she could continue this well of strength.

“Fine,” Daniel snapped her way. “You can have things your way, once again, but you can’t hide behind yourself forever.”

Tiera, finally giving up on the well of strength and now just angry with him, turned on him, glaring his way. Glaring helped, she barely had to see him through the slanted eyes. “Do not try to philosophize this,” she snapped at him. “You can’t do it. It’s a simple math equation. You, plus me, equals disaster. And it sucks.”

Daniel turned his back on her, grabbing the door and throwing it open, so hard it nearly crashed into the shelf of knickknacks on the side, but Link’s hand reached out and grabbed the door on the way in before the force could strike anything. Link and Daniel came face to face, Link looking smug while Daniel tried to look like the pretty boy he was.

“What are you doing here?” Link nearly snarled, and not for the reason Daniel would assume. Daniel would assume Link was trying to protect his sister, but in reality Link hated Daniel because he was dating the girl he wanted, though he had been lucky enough to have her at least one more time than Daniel, making Link’s score one and Daniel’s score zero.

“I was just leaving,” Daniel huffed, stepping out onto the front porch and turning his back on the man he thought of as nothing more than a chess club nerd (though Link was not on the chess club, he was part of the mathletes).

“Hey, Daniel,” Link said, leaning out the door and nearly closing it as his sister watched from the other side. Daniel turned to him, unconcerned by the bespectacled man before him. What he did not expect was Link to pull out a blade and hold it to Daniel’s neck. It was more for show, Link would never use it, but he loved to frighten those who had certain expectations of him. “If I see you around my sister, or Bliss, again, I will make sure you regret it.”

“What?” Daniel asked, too anxious to move. “Bliss is my girlfriend.”

“Not anymore,” Link said simply. “Are we clear?”

“Crystal,” Daniel said swiftly, wanting to get away from this outrageous household.

Link released his nemesis, watching him walk away down the street to his car, a little wildly, and pulling out a bit too quickly. Link smiled and walked into the house and looked to Tiera, whose eyes were wide and glistening with tears.

“Thank you,” she said sweetly.

Link did not have the heart to tell her he didn’t do it for her, so he simply nodded and said, “No problem,” and went up to his bedroom.
