Chapter 26

Sydney and Savannah stood horrified. Everyone behind them couldn't move. Their eyes were locked to the mess on the floor of their living room.
They had all arrived in Newport not that long ago. All but Randi. She had never come back out of the hospital and none of them could find her. By the time they were almost done searching it was close to three in the morning. Edward showed up with Savannah and was not happy. It took all of them to calm him down enough to get him into one of the cars. Savannah promised a search that would turn the west coast upside down to find her. What made it worse was that he couldn't feel her in any way. That's what scared him most. Savannah had explained to him that the two of them had had such an overload of one emotion that it temporarily wore their connection down. There was no telling when it would be restored.
Savannah and Sydney knew something was wrong when they arrived at the house. It seemed too silent, too eerie. There was no movement in the house at all. That in itself was unusual. There were always people in the house. Sydney could feel alot of the vampires and few humans under her feet in the lowest parts of the house. It wasn't until they went inside that they knew exactly what was wrong.
Every piece of furniture in the living room had been turned over. Books and papers were scattered on the floor. A body had been ripped limb from limb and had been reduced to so much raw meat that no one knew who it was. It was like a lot of blood hamburger. Fluids of different colors soaked into the rug underneath it. Every single one of them did not move. They couldn't. Walking into a room with a mangled corpse was not what they had expected at all.
The smell was the worst. The intestines, stomach and every other organ had been crushed, exposing the fluids inside. It was the smell that got to everyone. Kairi had to look away and throw up. Stephan pulled her hair back away from her face.
"What happend here?" Edward said to no one in particular. His eyes were fixed on the remains of the person in front of them.
"It's Ashton..." Sydney said in a whisper. No, this couldn't be happening. Savannah's eyes went wide.
"No, it can't be." She said firmly with desperation in her voice.
"Yes it is. If you dropped your shields enough you'd be able to sense it." Sydney said breaking down into tears. Savannah looked at the mush on the floor and let down her shields, the shields that protected her from outsiders.
Ashton's presence flooded over her in a wave of frozen fire. It was how they could pick each other out from a group of vampires. Everyone had a different feel to them. Ashton's was frozen fire while Savannah's was an overwhelming sense of humor. Just being near her could cause a person to be overcome with giddy laughter. But now, all that she could feel was what remained of Ashton. She could feel how he had been torn apart. The way he had been terrified and angry. It all washed over her until it made her sink to her knees.
Daniel reached down and grabbed her shoulders. The feelings lept from Savannah to him, causing them both to be rendered paralyzed where they were. Phillip moved towards them but Edward grabbed his arm.
"Don't. It's a linking spell. Touch them and you'll end up the same." he told Phillip. Edward bend down and placed his palms on the floor, clear of any blood. "Maurice," he whispered. He let a strong surge of power drain from his body and into the floor to travel through the ground to Maurice. It had worked in the past. He needed it to work now.
By the time Maurice and few of his higher kiss members made it upstairs, almost all of Edward's kiss had fallen to the link spell, including Jaicyn. Even though they hadn't touched Daniel or Savannah, the power of the spell was strong enough to leap into anyone weak enough for it to take over. Those who had fallen under was curle dup on the floor with a blank expression on their face. The shifters in the room remained standing but none could move. They were aware of everything going on but there was nothing they could do.
"Don't come in the room." Edward called out loudly. Maurice froze. He recongnized Edward's voice at once, but it was his tone that made him hault. "If you enter you will fall under the spell."
"What triggered it?" Maurice asked.
"Move to the door but do not cross the threshold." Edward told him. Maurice stepped closer to the doorway and looked in.
"Who is this?"
"Ashton, your son." Edward told him. Maurice's face went blank, showing no emotion of any kind. He stared down at Edward on the floor. He was still bent down, palms on the floor. He kept his power circulating through the ground so that it wouldn't be concentrated in one place. And that was the trap. If your power didn't expand, didn't let it move, then the spell would size your power and then your body.
Sydney tried to take a step forward towards her father but Edward reached out and grabbed her ankle. His power bled into her, traveling through her body, pushing hers through hers.
Kairi was the only one who wasn't paralyzed in any way. She was just sick to her stomach and horrified beyond belief. "What can I do?" she asked.
"Grab someone and walk out of the room. See if it's possible. I am not sure on how this spell works." Maurice told her. Kairi took a breath. She turned to Stephan since he was closest to her. Kairi took his hands in hers. His body relaxed almost at once. His eyes opened to reveal bright green eyes. The same eyes he had had in his animal form. His power seeped into her and Kairi gasped. This was a weird feeling.
"You alright?" he asked her. She could only nod. Together the two of them started walking towards Maurice. At times Kairi had to close her eyes. They had to pretty much step on the remains of Ashton. She almost slipped a few times but Stephan kept his grip on her.
"Kairi, wait." Edward said. She stopped a few feet from him. "Take hold of Sydney."
"But I'll become paralyzed with her."
"No, you won't. You didn't when you touched Stephan. Even if he wasn't as far under." Kairi hesitated. She slowly let go of one of Stephan's hands and reached out for Sydney. Sydney's body relaxed and she was free to move.
"Remarkable," Maurice whispered, "A conduit still exists." He wanted to get his hands on her, to see how much power she could handle. How much power, that was it! Kairi walked both Sydney and Stephan into the safety of the other room. No sooner had she let their hands go, Maurice reached out and took her face in his hands with a grip that was on the point of crushing her skull. His eyes bled toa pure dark green. No white or black was showing. Just green.
A wind blew between Kairi and Maurice. Not coming from one or the other, but because of them both. They were the wind, their entire bodies, their power. The temperature in the room raised dramatically to a scalding hot blanket of air. The shifters choked on it, while the vampires writhed in pain. They were not used to feeling such warmch, such heat and it was riding their bodies for all it was worth.
Kairi closed her eyes and screamed. She couldn't hold it in any longer. The heat and the pain was too much. She grabbed at Maurice's arms, wanting him to let go of her, to make the poin stop. That's when the rest of them felt it.
It was like a hurricane had been unleashed in the room. Gusts of wind poured over their bodies, engulfing all of them in the fury of the storm that raged from Maurice and Kairi. Every light in the house exploded in a burst of light.
And then there was nothing.
No sound, no movement. It was as if they were in a void of nothingness. There had been such a strong pouring out of power that everyone was temporarily stung. Then everything started to come back. Edward could hear someone crying, others breathing heavily. He came to his feet in a shaky movement. His skin crawled with power.
He helped Savannah and Daniel to stand together before going to his sister. Once she was up and steady, she checked on their kiss. Phillip and Faye were doing alright for the moment, just a little shaken. That only left the others in the other room.
Edward made his way across the dark room and avoided stepping on Ashton. Maurice was sitting on the floor holding Kairi in his arms. She was the one Edward had heard crying. Maurice stroked her hair with his hand gently. Edward gaped at her. The deep brown of her hair had changed to a shiny silver. It made the blue of her eyes stand out brightly. He made a mental note that she and Daniel both now had silver hair. He had never known why Danie's hair was silver. But now he think he knew. Stephan and Sydney were leaning against one wall, getting a hold of their senses.
"Take your vampires upstairs. I'm sure you remember the way. Daniel's pard will be up there too, but tomorrow will be confined downstairs for the full moon. We will speak about this later." Maurice told Edward, his eyes locked on what once had been his son's body.
