School Festival Part 2
A/N: These lyrics do not belong to me, they are from the lovely play of Wicked. The song is sung by Glinda the Good Witch and The Wicked Witch of the West before they became what they were in Wizard of Oz. For more information on this, buy the soundtrack, read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, or Wicked, the book based off of the play, and forgive me I have forgotten who the author is at this time. Or, if you have more questions, feel free to e-mail me. The full lyrics from this song are found at the bottom, if you have never heard the song, \'What is this feeling\' don\'t read the lyrics until after the chapter.
Chapter 27 – School Festival Part 2
Yuki sat in a middle center seat in the large auditorium of the school, looking about at the stage and the crowd. The girls all looked proper, the men all looked dashing, and the women on stage were constantly making fools of themselves. Two girls doing Romeo and Juliet, many girls and their imitations of pop stars, one girl brave enough to do opera with her voice, another doing a reading of some sort that bored half of the audience. As the time grew Yuki felt more and more anxious, and trepidacious, about seeing what it was Fuji was planning. Fuji was not big on attention, but the end of the show was the grand finale, and certainly she would not be doing such a thing, would she?
The cute freshman girl who was the announcer of all acts bobbed on stage, her glasses slightly askew, her blush hefty, and held her microphone up to her lips. “Our last performance this afternoon,” she said in her squeaky voice, assuring Yuki that Fuji really had gone for the encore act, “is a piece from the Broadway play ‘Wicked’ and is being performed by Chenbaro Fuji and Makenke Danko-” the rest of the cast, the supporting students that would be with them, were drowned out by the sound of many people speaking at once. It was not just Yuki, Shinwa, Shai, Kyoei, and Amatsu in utter shock that Fuji had decided to do something with Danko, many of the female students seemed to take great pleasure in this incident as well, which disturbed Yuki.
The curtain raised and sitting in the middle of the stage, looking prim and proper in a yellow sunflower sundress, was Fuji with a long blonde wig that was reminiscent of her own long tresses before they had been sheared except… blonde. Blonde?? Standing glaring at her on the left side of the stage was a woman dressed in a deep black dress, all of her showing skin painted green. A long black wig had been placed on her head and the only conclusion that Yuki could come to was that this other woman, that Fuji was singing a duet with!, was Danko.
The music started up, a slow beat at first, introducing the characters of Galinda and Elphaba, the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, before they were who they would be one day. Yuki knew the play from hearing Fuji talk about it years ago, but she was not aware that Fuji had any interest in singing it.
Fuji lifted a notepad off of her lap and began to scribble her pen, starting with, “Dearest, darlingest Momsie and Popsical,” her voice a bit lighter, a bit more childish, and perfect for the part.
Danko leaned back her head, writing in a slightly tatty notepad and speaking, “My dear father…”
And then the two began to sing, the first line together, “There\'s been some confusion over rooming here at Shiz…”
Danko: “But of course I’ll care for Nessa,” the wicked witch’s younger sister.
Fuji: “But of course, I’ll rise above it,” the notepad and the pen are placed in her lap as she looks up dreamily. Yuki was shocked to hear that her best friend could carry a tune, she had never heard her sing a day in her life. She was more shocked that Danko could sing.
Both: “For I know that\'s how you\'d want me to respond, Yes, there\'s been some confusion for you see, my room-mate is…”
Fuji: “Unusually and exceedingly peculiar, and altogether quite impossible to describe.”
Danko: “Blonde.” The music starts up, a bit faster, Fuji’s character of Galinda standing, and Danko moving towards her. The two are watching one another now, their eyes burning, they grow closer and Yuki grows more uncomfortable as the next words of the song float out.
Fuji: “What is this feeling? So sudden and new?”
Danko: “I felt the moment that I laid eyes on you.”
Fuji: “My pulse is rushing.”
Danko: “My head is reeling,” so was Yuki’s… why were they starting to hold hands and look deeply into one another’s eyes?
Fuji: “My face is flushing…”
Both: “What is this feeling? Fervid as a flame, does it have a name? Yes…” They threw each other’s hands down and stepped back from each other, spitting the next word. “Loathing. Unadulterated loathing!”
The two rushed off into the song, dancing and swirling, away and close to one another, and Yuki watching in utter amazement. Fuji had asked someone she detested to do a song with her about how much they… detested one another? Yuki was almost proud as she laughed silently to herself, watching the two of them act out anger on the stage.
Five other female girls came out, apparently other students at ‘Schiz’, singing along and sticking up for the character of Galinda, feeling sorry for her having to room with Elphaba.
The end of the song was coming, Fuji and Danko staring at one another, haughty looks on their faces, their movements fluid. Yuki wondered how long Fuji had been able to move her arm and leg in those ways and had not told them about it. She was moving perfectly, dancing with ease, who had helped her overcome fear and hatred to be able to move? For a quick second Yuki’s eyes darted to where Devilin sat in the audience with a few of his friends, watching Fuji like a lost lover. She grew worried and looked back to the stage, watching Fuji, Danko, and their small chorus come to the end of the song.
Both Girls: “Though I do admit it came on fast, still I do believe that it can last! And I will be loathing, for forever loathing, truly deeply loathing, my whole life long!” Fuji and Danko began to dance closer to each other, then, making a horrible scary face, Danko calls, “Boo!” and Fuji lets out this delicate little scream and runs off of the stage. The curtains closed and everyone stood up and gave out a thunderous applause, including Fuji’s small group of friends. Yuki applauded like crazy, but began to wonder what other secrets her friend was keeping from her.
