Chapter 27
*taps the mic* Is this thing on? It's been ages since I've updated this story but I haven't been doing much of any writing up until recently. This fic has been a true baby to me over the years and I just can't stand to let it go unfinished. Bit by bit I want Gavin's story resolved and, for the ppl that may have truly read and got into it, I'm sure I'm not alone. It's fairly short right now but I figured something was better than nothing and I'm still writing as I post this. Thanks for all the folks that sent me emails, they've really kept me going!
It seemed like an eternity had passed and that one question was still bouncing back and forth in my skull.
What the fuck was I going to do?
A simple enough question but it became complicated when a man I was beginning to care for, perhaps love, was now the thing I hated most. David's hand slipped into my boxers and the moment his hand wrapped around my cock that was enough to shake me out of my daze. I pushed him away with all the strength I had and scooted back to put more distance between us. His face crumbled with disappointment.
"You really think I'm going to hurt you?" he whispered.
"No," I admitted, "not on purpose. If we fuck tonight, what then? Don't expect me to be here every night for you when you're feeling nostalgic about your old life."
David frowned. "It's not like that. I just missed you. I needed to feel you again."
"You've felt enough of me," I grumbled, "and I think you should leave."
"But, I- Gavin, please," he stammered. "Don't you care about me at all? If you have any decency in you, you'd—"
My eyes narrowed with rage. "What was that? Decency? Do I need to recount the beatings I got because what I felt for you? The hell I've been going through ever since I met you? If I did the right and respectable thing I wouldn't have ever let you get as close as you did and I'd be in better shape for it."
"You'd still be with Ren," David pointed out, "so how much better shape could that be?"
"Fuck you," I snapped, only because he was right. "All I'm saying is, I let you in my life, I helped you the best I could and I didn't turn you away when it'd be much smarter if I did." I got up, anger replacing all the softer feelings I was beginning to remember. "So I'm going to make up for that starting this very moment. Get out. Now. Don't make me take back my invite; your kind can't fight that, can't you?"
A look passed over his face that I couldn't place and he got up from the floor. "Does that mean I can see you again? Just take things a bit slower next time?"
"We'll have to see," I replied coldly and yanked open the door.
"Wow, Gav, I didn't know you were psychic!"
Jon was standing in front of me with his fist posed to knock on the door. Why? Dear God, why?
When he saw my expression, his smile dropped. "What's the matter?" He peered into the apartment and his eyes bulged when he saw David. "Aren't you supposed to be dead?" he asked calmly. Not exactly the reaction I was expecting but I suppose Jon was made of tougher stuff than I was.
David didn't smile. "Technically, yes."
"Well, well, isn't this a nice surprise," Jon said in a nasty tone. He looked at me. "And he got a nice invite too, lovely."
"I made a mistake and he's leaving," I sneered.
David was still staring at Jon. "I remember you from that night. The mistake wasn't letting me in, but YOU."
Jon didn't seem too happy about that. "Who the fuck are you to say so? I know him better than you ever did and I would never hurt him."
"So you say," David whispered, "but there's something about you that could. I remember how you looked at me…..I can smell the blood on you."
"That's enough!" I growled. "David, you are no longer welcome. Consider my invitation null and void."
The effect of not being welcome was instant and David moved to the door as if pushed by an invisible breeze. Jon had to quickly sidestep or risk being bumped into and the look on his face screamed how happy he was. Giving David a smug look, he walked past him and into the apartment. He wouldn't be feeling so smug later when I told him to leave too but I wanted to hurt David more than embarrass Jon. Terrible, aren't I?
"I shouldn't have said that," David said. "I'm just….jealous. Please, Gavin, don't toss me away like this. I need you."
"David, that's enough." From the shadows beside the stairs, a man stepped forward and took David by the arm. Shit on a stick, how long was that dude standing there? "It's time to go." The man looked at me with dark green eyes. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have let him come."
"You're the friend that helped him sneak away?"
He nodded. "I'm Liam. For the record, he talks nonstop about you and he does care deeply. "
David groaned. "Shut up, Liam."
Liam just smiled. "Is that not why you came here? To explain that to him? But his lover is here, David, it's time to go and dawn will be here soon."
David gave me one last sad look before being led away by Liam and they got into a car that was parked further down the street. I closed the door and banged my forehead on it several times. What a night I was having.
Jon's hand traveled up the middle of my back and his fingers played on the back of my neck, tickling me. It made me squirm and gasp at the same time since that was the most sensitive part on my body.
"Are you okay there, sugarplum?" Jon said.
I laughed. "Sugarplum?"
"Yeah, aren't lovers supposed to say stuff like that?" he teased.
"Please don't, I'd take back my invite from you too for that."
"It wouldn't work," he whispered and turned me around so my back was against the door. He boxed me in and put his knee between my legs and with my thin silk boxers, the stimulation was very hard to ignore. "You can't get rid of me."
He grabbed my hips and began guiding me back and forth on his knee so I was riding it and I moaned softly. "I may not prevent you from visiting me again, but for tonight I really want to just sleep alone."
With a grumbled curse, Jon pulled away. "Is it because of what David said about me?"
Truthfully, I hadn't even thought about that until that very moment. "No," I began, "it's because I worked all night and even though sex sounds wonderful, I want to just collapse in bed and forget this whole fucking day. The stuff David said about you was just thrown at me to shift my anger to you. Why would you have blood on you? You're no vampire. It just didn't make sense."
Jon smiled. "Exactly, no weird vampire here. But even if there's no sex, can I still sleep here with you?"
I shrugged, went into my bedroom and slipped under the covers. Jon followed me into the room minutes later and I saw him quickly undressing, making sure to keep his underwear on. He turned off the lights and hopped in the bed beside me, hugging me but keeping enough distance so I wouldn't feel anything poking me in the back.
"I'd never hurt you," he whispered.
The way he said it reminded me of several pillow talk sessions I would have with Ren. I think I should have made him go home if even Jon was reminding me about Ren tonight.
"Could never or would never?" I replied just as softly.
Jon froze behind me. "There's a difference? Pick whichever one you want; they both mean no, don't they?"
"I guess so."
Jon pulled me closer, and thankfully there were no hard surprises. Minutes later, I heard his soft snoring and was jealous he managed to fall asleep that quickly. I closed my eyes and prayed I'd follow him.
