“what are you still doing here?” Mel looked up to see Douglas reclining on the doorway to her office.
“Lagging it home,” Mel mumbled as he strode in and sat in the chair in front of her desk. “You tend to run out when the meetings are over, what gives?”
Mel felt her heart hammer away as the thought of Alexis being alone with Ellie killed her slowly on the inside.
“Stuff at home,” she mumbled she didn't look at Douglas as she played a random flash games she had found.
“Come on tell me,” he prodded as he leaned back and put his feet on her desk.
“Ellie has this meeting with this old co-worker and I'm giving them their space.” Mel looked at Douglas and tapped his feet.
“I'm the boss,” he mumbled.
“I'm the employee that has been saving your ass, the last three projects you gave me were shit. Are you giving the interns major account assignments.”
“Hey hey hey,” Douglas shook his finger at Mel, “You asked for scut work, what? you want to start coming to the office more often.”
Mel shrugged her shoulders, Ellie was recuperating fast, she could start coming back in, she thought.
“Come in Wednesdays and I'll put ya back on websites and director.” Douglas took his feet off her desk and winked at her. “think about it. Now go home, I don't want you here.”
Mel dismissed him with her hand as she sighed, she didn't want to go home for once in her life. She looked at the time, it was close to five. She really had no where else to go.
Friends? No she didn't have many of those. They were mostly co-workers or acquaintances. Those weren't friends. She wouldn't trust them or feel comfortable enough to tell them her problems.
She contemplated Lucas, they both were similar in certain aspects and they both confided in each other. Yet she needed to deal with this alone, she had never felt jealousy like this.
Mel glanced out her office door and Douglas came back with two glasses and a bottle of bourbon.
“If your not gonna leave then your gonna join me.”
“Well how the hell am I gonna get home.” Mel asked.
“I thought you didn't want to,” Douglas raised his eye brow as he poured them some liquor and handed her a glass.
“This is not a good way to deal with stress,” Mel mumbled as she chugged the drink down.
Ellie was sitting in her office waiting, she had her dissolution of marriage, the cryogenic folder she found and her laptop.
She tapped her fingers on her desk as she waited for that knock. She had told Alexis to arrive Friday around five. Ellie had told Mel that she could be present if she wanted to, but Mel insisted that this time she be out.
Ellie looked down at the open journal and scanned the timeline, she had added more dates, she was going through her journals faster because they had less input in them. Sometimes the gap would be of months as she didn't write weekly as she used to.
31.7/4/2001: Saw the firework show at school
32.8/13/2001: Lucas visited us for the week.
33.9/10/2001: Senior year starts!!!!!
Senior year, Ellie thought as she realized she survived college with Mel. Mel had scholarships and grants, Ellie on the other hand had some loans. Ellie recalled pretty easily the events of that year. A journal she could skip, she contemplated that notion.
Ellie was so engrossed in her thoughts that she was startled when she heard the doorbell. She took a deep breath as she stood up and made it to the front door.
There she stood, Alexis del Potro, a woman who held the key to some of the most important aspect of her life.
Alexis smiled as she was greeted with Ellie standing up. She fought the urge to bear tackle her into the house. She smiled shyly as she notice that Ellie's hair had gotten longer, making her seem more mature and fine.
Alexis brush some of her dark locks out of her face as she finally spoke.
“sorry I'm a bit late, John had me with him in a meeting with a new potential client.”
Ellie took a hesitant step backwards and extended her hand indicating Alexis to come in, Alexis nodded as she stepped in and Ellie closed the door behind them.
“My office is down the hallways,” Ellie led the way as she placed a hand on the wall holding herself up. Alexis fought the urge to grab her arm and be her support.
“sorry I have a mess,” Ellie said as she sat behind her desk. Alexis took the chair that was near the bed and moved it close to Ellie's desk.
Ellie had no clue on how to start. “I'm glad to see your walking, glad your not in that wheelchair anymore.” Alexis commented as she leaned forwards on the desk.
Ellie chuckled nervously, “Yeah, I felt pretty useless in that thing.”
Alexis looked out to the hallway, “Where's Melissa?”
Ellie wondered the same thing as she shrugged her shoulders. “She's probably still at the office.”
Alexis eyed the papers that was on Ellie's desk and looked at Ellie who seemed to be extremely nervous.
“We don't have to do this you know?” Alexis offered the chance to end what ever it was that Ellie wanted to do.
“No I do, because you see, there are some things that I can't recall.” Alexis frowned. “Can't remember?” she muttered as Ellie nodded.
“In the crash I receive damage to the part of my brain that stores my memories,” Alexis gasped as she covered her mouth. 'Amnesia,' she though, she knew Ellie had receive some impact to the head, she just didn't realized the severity of it.
“some memories with time gradually surface but there are somethings that are gone.” Ellie took a deep breath as she looked at Alexis.
“for instance, you I don't really remember you.” Alexis's heart dropped as she rubbed her hands as she nodded her head letting Ellie know that she understood.
“I know we're co-workers, but I know that because I read it. Yet I feel like there is something hidden. Something about you and I.” Ellie looked at Alexis trying to decipher what she was thinking. The more she looked at her the more she was sure that something was going on between them.
“I don't know how to even start,” Alexis mumbled as she looked around the room, she took her surrounding in as she looked at Ellie again.
“anywhere is fine, just tell me something,” Ellie pleaded as she placed her hands on top of the desk.
After a couple of minutes of silence Alexis reached for Ellie's hand and took it in between hers.
“I-,” Alexis rubbed the top of her hands as she closed her eyes trying to stay calm. “You and I slept together.”
Ellie froze as she took a deep breath, she shook her head. “No, no,” she uttered, she would not cheat on Mel. She wouldn't.
Ellie felt nauseous as she covered her mouth and shook Alexis hand off hers.
“NO!”
“Relax,” Alexis uttered as she took Ellie's hand again, “I'll explain,” Ellie felt sick as Alexis rubbed her hand.
3/11/2008 (Boston)
“this place is huge?” I heard Ellie whistle as she looked around. Beside her John stood and smiled brightly.
“Hey consider yourself lucky, I got into this damn seminar we better get the most out of it.” I rolled my luggage next to Ellie as I leaned in and whispered next to her ear.
“I bet John had to blow someone to get into this things.” Ellie blushed as she smacked my arm. “Behave, it was nice of him to bring the senior staff along.”
Ellie fished her cellphone out of her pocket as she dialed.
I heard her side of the conversation.
“Hey I'm at the hotel already, your not gonna believe it. It's so huge,”
“......”
“Yeah, I'll try and check that place out and I'll bring ya a souvenir.”
“.........”
“don't destroy the house with Lucas, I know you two were planning on remodeling your office.”
“......”
“Love you too, take care and don't drink so much coffee, eat an apple. Bye.”
I smiled as Ellie looked at me and showed me her phone, “Just need to check in, before Mel hops on a plane herself and comes and checks on me.”
I nodded feeling guilt and jealousy. How lucky Melissa was to have Ellie.
“She doesn't trust you?” I asked as we made our way to the elevator.
“Oh no not that, just that Mel always assumes the worst, plus she hates planes. So yeah, but enough about Mel for once. I heard that there is this awesome buffet place not too far from here, we should check it out before we leave Boston.”
I smiled as we reached our floor. John walked down the left of the hallway along with Michael and Tim. They were his legal advisor, Ellie and I were financial advisors. We walked down the right as our rooms were right across from each other.
“Let me unpack some things and I'll keep ya company in your room.” Ellie offered as I nodded and followed her into her room.
“Hey Alex I've been curious to ask ya something.” I sat on her bed as she put clothes away in the drawers.
“Sure,” I stared at her as she bent forward in front of me. I swallowed hard, as the lust that was building up left me breathless.
“Well how would you feel about Thomas donating his sperm at a cryogenic bank.”
I stopped looking at her as I frowned a bit, something like that had never crossed my mind. The thought of children never crossed his or my mind.
Thomas did not want kids and I didn't either. That was one of the main reason he and I got married, we agreed on such a thing.
“I don't know, I know Thomas doesn't want kids,”
“But yeah biologically it be his, but he wouldn't be legally bonded to the child.” Ellie turned to look at me.
The though of Thomas doing such a thing didn't bother me. The more I thought about the more indifferent I felt about it.
“No I don't mind,” I answered as she smiled at me and led the way out of her room.
3/14/2008
We left the last seminar teary eye, the night before we had attended a party that was hosted by the hotel and we were worn out.
“We should still party,” Tim announced as John shook his head. “I want to catch my plane in the morning thank you very much.”
“I don't know,” I hesitated as Ellie nodded.
“I'm in,” she hooked her arm with Tim as I took a deep breath and fake my enthusiasm. “all right what the hell I'm in too.”
We walked down the streets of Boston as we found the buffet that was highly recommended to Ellie. Of course Mel recommended it, I bit the sarcasm, I envied Mel. I had never met her but the though of her made my blood boil.
How I wished Ellie and I would have met first instead.
“I hear they have an open bar along with a shit load of appetizers.” Ellie remarked as we walked in.
“I'll start the tab,” Tim offered as I saw Ellie fishing forty bucks out of her pocket.
“Here,” Tim declined but stubborn Ellie got her way as we made it to the bar.
We gorge ourselves with beer and hot wings as Tim and Ellie chatted away comfortably.
They both stared at the screen watching a soccer game as Ellie rooted for the team that Tim was against.
“Mel said that this team won some cup,”
“bullshit that was not them,” Tim retaliated as he chugged his beer and Ellie matched him.
“Mel said it and she knows a lot about soccer,” Mel shouted as she flagged the bartender down.
“What ever,” Tim retaliated as he also ordered another beer.
I rolled my eyes as the two drunkard as I nodded to the bartender to refill mine too.
I chewed on some salty peanuts as I heard Ellie mention Mel again.
Mel this and that it was driving me nuts hearing her talk about Mel. I felt my heart sink. Ellie was wrapped up in her world, no matter what she would never look at me the way I looked at her.
Hell she wouldn't think twice about me if it wasn't for the fact that Thomas is from Spain. I finished my beer and ordered a shot of tequila.
“whoooo,” Tim shouted as he saw me down the hard drink.
“that's what I'm talking about,” he shouted as he ordered some too.
Ellie smiled as he handed her a glass. I felt jealous at how easily he was flirting with her. What frustrated me more was how she let him.
It was close to midnight when we stumbled out of the bar, and slowly made it back to the hotel
We got Tim into his room as I being the less drunk guided Ellie into her room.
Ellie chuckled uncontrollably as she fell on the bed. “What a night,” she sighed as she patted the side of her bed. I sat next to her as she closed her eyes. She had a big smile as she ran her fingers through her hair.
I got the courage and caressed her face as her eyes snapped open. She looked at me and studied me. I froze as her drunken eyes scrutinized me.
They darken slightly as her cheeks reddened. I leaned down and completely cupped her face.
“I'm jealous of Melissa,” I mumbled as I laid down next to her.
“why?” she swallowed hard as she covered my hand.
“Because she can do this,” her lips were soft and salty as I relished the feeling. The feeling of her warm breath on my lips. I got to taste what Melissa had a chance to do every day and every night. All I wanted was one night. Just one night.
(Present)
Ellie stopped breathing as she swallowed hard. She shook her head as she brushed Alexis hand off hers.
“an affair would be us having a relationship while your still in one. That never happened.”
Ellie numbly nodded at Alexis words as she rubbed her face, she pulled at her hair, she rubbed her neck. She didn't know how to react, she had no clue no idea no notion of the night. She felt sick. She felt disgusted with herself and at Alexis. She looked up at Alexis as she glared at her.
Alexis just sat there waiting for Ellie to recuperated. “that's the major secret, the next day you just pretended like it never happened and threaten me. Told me to pretend nothing had happened and to just move on.”
“Ok,” Ellie wiped her eyes as she started to cry at the frustration at not remembering and the anger she felt for doing such a thing.
“Ok,” Ellie repeated as she looked at the papers she had.
“Why do I have this?” Ellie wiped away her tears, she needed to get through this.
She handed Alexis the folder, Alexis read it and saw her husband Medical information.
“After what happened between us, I talked to Thomas and he said he didn't mind donating his sperm. When I told you about it, you decide to get us a consultation at the cryogenic bank where Thomas donate his sperm and you donate your eggs.”
“I wanted a child,” Ellie mumbled as she looked confused. Her head started to hurt as she bit her lip.
'no,' she pleaded silently, she needed to know.
“you do, or you did, you have everything set up. You got your donor and you have your eggs frozen ready to do the insemination. That folder is a summary of all your information.”
Alexis took the other paper on Ellie's desk and gasped.
“This I have no idea,” Alexis muttered as Ellie looked at the paper and nodded.
“I do, I remember that now. Mel didn't want kids, so I was willing to go my separate way in case Mel denied me again.”
Alexis nodded as she sat there and fought the urge to grab Ellie's hand.
“Mel doesn't know any of this,” Alexis mumbled as she glanced at the clock that hung on the wall.
“No, she suspects something occurred between you and me, I think she suspect an affair, but she's clueless on m plan to have a baby.” Ellie nodded as she looked at Alexis.
“I have one more thing that has been bothering me,” Ellie admitted as she pulled another folder out from a box that was next to her on the floor.
In it was the piece of the map she had trace and her police report.
“Why was I driving to your house the day of my accident?”
Alexis took a deep breath, her mouth was dry and she was tired. Her chest felt like it was going to cave in from all the hammering her heart was doing non-stop.
“Thomas was reconsidering withdrawing his offer,” Alexis admitted as she remembered calling Ellie and telling her there was a problem with her plan. She never anticipated the ending result.
Ellie chuckled as she placed her elbows in the desk and cradle her head as she cried.
“Well I can finally tell Mel the truth on why I was driving away from home.”
After a few minutes of both being surrounded by silence, another things triggered in Ellie's head.
Ellie looked up suddenly, “that's why I had boxes at the office and not here. That why this room look so empty.”
Ellie looked around as she recalled the idea of turning the current room they were in into a nursery.
She closed her eyes tightly as more memories resurfaced.
(A/N: I'm still not near to the end.)
