Ethan insisted on walking Ryan to work.

“You can drop me off in the ca

“I’ll bring a flashlight.” Ethan touched Ryan’s hand, then his light beard; his hair was a beautiful light brown. Ryan’s deep blue eyes met Ethan’s.

“I lied when I said that I didn’t want to be your boyfriend.” Ryan looked at his hand in Ethan’s hand. Ethan stroked Ryan’s face luxuriating in the feel of his never shaven skin. It didn’t have coarseness of skin shaved many times. There must have been a clause in the gypsy spell for men’s shaving so the wolves face wouldn’t appear shaven; that must have caused the skin to toughen the same as other men’s. Ryan’s skin was soft as a boy’s. Ethan planted his lips against Ryan’s lips. Ryan moved closer to receive the kiss and opened his mouth to welcome Ethan’s tongue. Ryan’s hand gently stroked Ethan’s long hair. Ryan pulled away breathless. His hard-on was obvious through his soft khaki pants. “Wow!”

“I’m falling in love with you.” Ethan took Ryan’s hand in his as they left the house.

“And Juan?”

“Just sex. I like him; the sex was great but he gave me nothing emotionally.”

“And.” Ryan smiled at Ethan in the moonlight.

“You give me more. I can imagine spend my life with you. I always dreaded being near Juan. It was a thrill, but he isn’t someone I want pendpend my life with.” Ethan felt so comfortable holding Ryan\'s hand.

“I like how I feel when I’m with you. Ethan, I think about leaving my wife for you and we never had sex. You give me so much more than she does.”

“It’s okay.”

“I want to have sex with you. It isn’t that.”

“There’s no hurry. You have to work tonight and I have a class early tomorrow morning.”

“We can talk about this tomorrow afternoon.”

“Ryan, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of your love.” Ethan lifted Ryan’s hand and kissed it. They walked the rest of the way silently. Ethan drank some coffee before the trek home. He promised several times not to step out in front of any oncoming vehicles. The walk in the dark seemed so long but Ethan arrived home in one piece. Ethan undressed and went to sleep. He hoped that he would get up in time for his morning class. Jake woke early to open his downtown office. Margaret and him had a good business going in the search and find business. They had an ad in the paper for a receptionist. He wondered if he could talk Ryan into taking it. It had to be less stressful than working at night alone. Ethan didn’t see Leslie at Major Crimes when he returned to work. Wallace told him that she was staying with her parents. Ethan dialed Leslie’s cell phone number. “I’m sorry that I haven’t called in a while,” Ethan apologized.

“You were busy getting married.” Leslie coughed. “I heard that you were in the hospital for a time.”

“They put my leg in traction,” Ethan said. “Leslie, how have you been?”

“The same. Lousy,” Leslie said. “I’m staying with my parents.”

“When would it be a good time for Ryan and I to visit?” Ethan asked.

“I thought werewolves were supposed to mate for life,” Leslie said.

“Only a legend. I’m married now. Ryan is her best friend’s husband.”

“Did you find that gypsy curse?”

“He did, but there are many things we need to discuss before using it. I’m not going to make you one of us without your consent.”

“Come over, tomorrow night.”

“Sure. Ryan can swap hours with someone or take a night off,” Ethan said. “Leslie, we’ll talk.”

Leslie led Ryan and Ethan to the parlor. “Mom, I need to speak privately with my friends,” Leslie told the elderly woman.

“I’ll be in the kitchen if you need anything,” her mother said.

“Thank you.” Leslie hacked.

“The ingredient weren’t easy to get. I haven’t dug up the parts of a cadaver needed. I have found most of the animal parts and all the herbs,” Ryan said. “I feel confident if you decide to do this that I can have all the ingredients and the potion mixed in two days.”

“Are all werewolves tiny or just your pack?” Leslie asked.

“I’ve never seen one over 5’ 10’’. Ethan is tall for a werewolf. Most males are a little stockier than Ethan and an inch or two shorter. I’m on the smaller side myself,” Ryan said.

“Why are none tall?” the tall woman asked.

“We don’t know. We know intermarriages occurred and that gypsies wouldn’t avoid cursing tall people. Therefore, we have to assume that tall people can’t survive the transformation. However, it still might be possible that we just haven’t come across tall werewolves and they exist in another city. Werewolves tend to avoid other packs. Crossing another packs lines without consent is suicide,” Ethan said.

“So you don’t know for sure,” Leslie said.

“Sorry. It isn’t like we advertise,” Ryan said.

“Would you like to my mother to get us something to eat?” Leslie asked.

“No. We have plenty of kibble at home,” Ethan said. “We’re fine.”

Leslie laughed a second before coughing again. “Damn infections. It sounds bad, but it’s just a sore throat.”

“Let’s say it’s just our pack that is small and height isn’t an issue,” Ryan said. “You’ll still face many difficulties: craving of rare meat, the desire to change every night, enormous appetite and changes in your senses.”

“If it is all the same, I rather die as a human being,” Leslie said.

“Is my spirit less worthy than yours because I was born with cursed blood?” Ethan asked.

“No, to me it’s a choice. You were born with that curse. I want to live the rest of my life with human dignity,” Leslie said. “Thank you for offering.”

“You’re welcome.” Ryan hugged Leslie.

“I think Ryan better go. He could still get to work on time,” Ethan hugged Leslie ande hee her a brief kiss. Ethan slipped Ryan the key to the Saturn. “Call me anytime you need to talk.”

“I will.” Leslie coughed again.

“Call if you change your mind about the gypsy spell,” Ryan said. “I went to a lot of effort to find it. Thank you for your time.” Ryan took his leave.

Her father entered the room. “What are you doing here?” he said looking down at Ethan.

“I’m talking,” Ethan said.

“You bring your little friend over to talk,” he sneered.

“Dad, his friend only wanted to help,” Leslie said. “I told them no thanks. Since I declined, it doesn’t matter what they offered. Dad, leave us.”

“Do you want to take her to Disney World one last time,” the old man sneered.

“I wouldn’t take her to Disney World; that is your job,” Ethan said back. “All I wanted to know if Leslie wanted to stay with me and my wife. Ryan and his wife live with us. I only had the best intentions. Leslie, I’m still offering. Go to Albany with Ryan and I. The children would bring cheer to you.”

“Children are spilt and germs,” her father said.

“Nothing brightens the spirit more than holding a baby.” Ethan wrapped his arms around Leslie and kissed her deeply. “Leslie, you know my number.”

“If I change my mind, I’ll let you know,” Leslie said. “Maybe Ryan hasn’t left yet.”

“I don’t mind the walk,” Ethan said.

“Don’t jump in front of any moving vehicles,” Leslie teased.

“I’ll try not to.” Ethan smiled.

“Or atst cst crawl awaLeslLeslie whispered into Ethan’s ear.

“What the fuck are you?” Leslie\'s father asked. “The shooting could hbeenbeen a fluke, but your leg was pulverized. No one could have healed that in two weeks.”

“Mr. Stephenson, if I show you, I’ll have to kill you. Good night, Sir.”

As Ethan left the room, Leslie sat down at the table. Ethan heard her father ask, “So Leslie what is he? No man could do what he did.”

“He isn’t a man.” Leslie coughed.

Ethan ed bed back. “Leslie, don’t tell him.”

“He’ll guess worse things.” Leslie looked so pale and thin.

Ethan removed his shoes and started to remove the rest of his clothes as Leslie\'s father started to shake in fear. “So you’re afraid. Good. I’m a werewolf. Ryan offered to make her like us, but Leslie refused.” Ethan took his pants down and peed on the wall. “Leslie didn’t want to spend the rest of her years half a woman and half something else.” Ethan ziphis his pants.

“You lived with that flesh eater.”

“We only eat flesh of those that wrong us or our own, although that fat nurse at the hospital that refused to feed me looked awful tempting. In the legends of our own pack, we resorted to eating human flesh only during times of famine. I’m not proud of that.” Ethan redressed.

“And you wanted to make Leslie into a monster.”

“It wasn’t my suggestion. It was Ryan’s. He was the one who killed a gypsy to get the spell. It’s a shame. Wenevenever know if that gypsy gave her life in vain.”

“Did he eat her?”

“He didn’t say.” Ethan started to walk away, then turned to face the tall man in his seventies. “If you get any ideas about killing me, remember the pack knows I’m here.”

“I’ll walk you to the door.” Leslie got up from her chair.

“Thanks,” Ethan said.

Leslie wrapped her fragile arms around Ethan at the door and kissed him briefly. “Take care. I’ll see you in the next world.”

“We’re not going to the same place.” Ethan started to sob. “I remember running free after the shooting.”

“I don’t fear death. This pain I could do without.” Leslie stroked Ethan’s face. “Take care of your new family.”

“Call me, anytime.” Ethan touched Leslie’s hand a moment longer before he walked out the door into the warm summer night. Ethan shed some silent tears as the heat of the night bore down on him.
