“Mel,” Ellie whispered as Mel covered her face with her arm and groaned.
“Hey,” Ellie insisted as she rubbed Mel's bare arm. Ellie frowned she was unusually warm, well warmer actually. Ellie felt Mel's forehead.
“Your burning up,” Ellie mumbled as she hobbled as quickly as she could to the kitchen. She grabbed an ice pack, a water bottle and some ibuprofen pills. Once again bedside Mel, Ellie shook her more firmly.
“Come on,” Ellie coaxed as a half conscious Mel sat up. Ellie offered two pills and Mel chugged some water and then fell back in bed fast asleep.
Ellie placed the ice pack on her forehead, and Mel just grimace but still did not waken.
“Fuck,” Ellie mumbled, she hated when Mel got sick, Mel was very healthy so whenever she was sick it wasn't a 24 hour bug or shit it was more of a week unconsciousness. “Let's hope it doesn't last a week.” Ellie muttered as she rubbed Mel's face. “Come on babe,” Ellie whispered as she kissed her cheek.
Ellie found a thermometer in the bathroom, she cleaned it with some rubbing alcohol and dried it. She rubbed her thumb across Mel's lips coaxing her to open.
She slipped it in when her mouth slightly parted and waited for the results. A minute later the device beep and Ellie started to panic even more. '103! Fuck!' Her mind reeled as Ellie went back to the fridge to get another ice pack. This time she placed it on the back of Mel's neck.
Mel hissed but didn't awaken.
“Oh Mel,” Ellie uttered as she sat on the bed caressing Mel's cheek.

24.11/23/2000: Fall quarter over decide to not travel for the holidays.
25.12/24/2000: Bought Mel new pair of glasses, Mel got me a laptop.
Ellie woke up to tapping on her shoulder. “Hey sleepy head, what gives your not ready for physio?” Angie asked as Ellie rubbed her eyes, it was close to ten. She had fallen asleep again next to Mel, who was breathing really heavy.
“Mel's sick,” Ellie stated as she felt Mel's head, she was still very warm but no longer burning up as she was earlier in the morning.
“Let me see,” Angie inspected Mel as she checked her temperature and took her pulse. “Was she showing sign that she was getting sick.” Angie asked as Ellie shook her head.
“No, it was sudden, but that's how Mel usually get's sick. She gets so overwhelmed with work and stuff that her body shuts down and it forces her to rest.”
Angie nodded, stress was a major factor in some health related illness.
“Well then no Physio today?” Angie asked as Ellie nodded.
“I'll do what I can at home.” Ellie mumbled she really didn't want to leave Mel alone.
“It's fine,” Angie looked at Ellie. “Just keep her hydrated and manage her fever okay?”
Ellie nodded as Angie touched Mel's forehead, Mel moved her head and groaned. Ellie touched Mel's forehead whispering 'It's okay,' Mel stopped groaning and calmed down.
“I swear you two are like match made in heaven.” Angie teased as she patted Ellie on the arm.
1/10/2001
The bell for 'assistance needed' at the front desk rang. “I got it,” I told my co-worker Diane. “By all means,” she chuckled as I called out, “Be right there,”
I notice the stack of book, mostly art books as I looked up to meet caramel hues.
Mel blushed as she handed me her library card. “Hello stranger,” I called as I took her hand first then her card.
“Good evening,” she called back as she pulled her glasses off and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
I scanned the books while she waited and tapped her fingers on the counter in a certain manner. “What are ya playing?” I asked as Mel blushed. “Ode to Joy” Mel mumbled as she stopped tapping her fingers.
“why all the art books?” I asked as I stamped their due date on the inside and handed Mel her card back.
“I have to find a style that appeals to me and then create something based on my specific influences.”
I nodded, Mel was a computer major and an Art minor. Yet she somehow seemed to be doing a lot of subjects at once.
“what time are you off?” Mel asked as she looked at her watch and then back at me. “In an hour why?”
“So I can walk ya home you dummy.”
“Look whose the dummy, we both live in the same place.” I countered as I looked around and leaned in to kiss her.
Caught by surprise, Mel was red when I pulled back. She cleared her throat as she opened her backpack and place some of the books in.
“I'll be back in an hour then,” Mel mumbled as I nodded.
“I uh – bye,” Mel stuttered as she walked out.
“Love you too, you dork,” I mumbled as I went to the back room with Diane again.

Ellie maneuver herself in the kitchen as she rummaged the covers for a can of chicken soup.
“Damn you mom, why weren't you more forceful in teaching me how to cook.” Ellie mumbled as she despise the fact that she lacked the cooking ability.
Ellie stood in the middle of the kitchen and realized how much she depended on Mel.
Feeling defeated, Ellie picked up the phone and dialed.
“Hello,” the deep voice on the other end of the line greeted.
“Dad,”
James voiced soften at his youngest child. “Ellie are you okay?” James asked, he could hear the panic in Ellie's voice.
“Yeah I'm okay it's Mel.”
James looked around to see if his wife was anywhere near. “What happened to Melissa?” James asked concerned. Unlike his wife, James liked Mel, he liked her for her integrity and her good nature. He was glad, that his daughter had someone to take care of her.
“Yeah she got sick and I'm clueless in the kitchen.” Ellie admitted with guilt churning in her gut.
James couldn't help but chuckle. He remembered when Maggie had tried to teach Ellie how to cook. It wasn't pretty when two hard heads butted over who was right and this was when Ellie was ten, So Maggie just gave up in order to avoid conflict and besides, she liked the control she held over the family meals, by being the patriarch in the kitchen.
“Do you want to speak to your mother?” James asked as Ellie bit her lip. “Yes,”
Maggie eagerly took the phone from James when she realized who was on the other end.
“Ellie honey whats wrong?”
“Hey ma, what's the best thing for someone whose has a high fever, I mean food wise.”
“Are you okay?” Asked Maggie.
“I'm fine it's Mel-”
“Melissa is sick?” Maggie cut Ellie off as Ellie confirmed.
Maggie took a deep breath as looked up to see James looking at her. Maggie rolled her eyes at him and mouthed 'fine'.
“Thanks mom,” Ellie said as Maggie felt something in her chest as she realized how worried her daughter was. She smiled to James and finally after ten years she realized how miserable they all were, by not being a united family due to her fault.
“All right then.”

It was close to midnight, when Mel snapped her eyes open. She felt Ellie's hand on her chest as she looked around. The bathroom light was on, serving as a night light for them. Mel glanced to look at the direction of the night stand and saw a couple of water bottles an empty a bowl, a thermometer and a bottle of pills.
“Fuck,” Mel cursed as she felt her back ache, she must have been in bed for a while now. She felt her bladder confirm that notion, as she sat up.
Ellie quickly woke up when she felt Mel shift. She quickly placed her had on Mel's head.
Mel couldn't help but chuckled as she took Ellie's hand. “I'm fine,” she reassured her as Ellie confirmed. Mel's fever had finally broken again about an hour ago.
“how long have I been out?” Mel asked as she swung her feet to the side and touched the ground.
“The whole day your fever wouldn't subside, I had to call my mom. I was a bit clueless on what to do. I mean Angie was here for a while but she had to go.”
“Maggie came over?” Mel asked astounded. “Actually,” Ellie hesitated.
“She's here” Mel whispered as she looked at the close door. “Please tell me she's not sleeping in my office.”
“No silly, she's in my office, she's behaving. Don't worry okay.” Mel rubbed her eyes as she stood up recalling in the first place why she had waken up.
“I gotta pee,” Mel stated as she wobbled into the bathroom.
By Six in the morning Mel was up, she ruffled her hair as she made her way into the kitchen. She aimlessly followed her routine as she started the coffee maker and pulled out the cartoon of eggs.
“I made pancakes,” Mel stopped breathing as she snapped her head to the side to see Maggie sipping coffee and sitting so quietly on the small table.
Mel let out a groan as she felt her chest heavy, “Maggie you scared the hell out of me.”
“your welcome then,” Maggie muttered as Mel rolled her eyes. “ha ha good one.”
“Let's not start,” Maggie said as she pushed a plate with warm fluffy pancakes towards Mel.
“Peace offering?” Mel inquired as she poured herself a mug of coffee.
“sure,”
“Thank you,” Mel mention as she took a bite. “I made enough for you and Ellie when she gets up.”
“I meant about yesterday, but this too.” Mel spoke between bites.
“So what gives did ya put poison and your gonna be nice to me in my last hour life.” Mel chuckled as she raised her hand. “Sorry Maggie I couldn't help it.”
“Glad to see you in better shape,” Maggie smiled. The day before she realized how much Ellie cared for this woman.
Ellie would not leave Mel's side for more than five minutes, Maggie took a deep breath, she had to accept that Elizabeth was in love with this woman, and that no matter what she thought or tried to do, it wasn't going to deter them from each other.
Maggie smiled, Mel had endure years of verbal abuse from her, but she never once falter from Ellie's side.
“Maggie?” Mel caught Maggie's attention as she nodded for Mel to continue.
“I want us to be civilized to each other, last time, I mean I know you believe that I-,”
“How about,” Maggie interrupted as she took a deep breath, she was tired of all the arguing. She was losing her kids and her husband. She couldn't see her daughter in a daily basis because of her attitude. Finally after years Maggie was 'growing up.'
“How about we start all over again?”
