Karma Lunare
Chapter Twenty-Four
Virginia sat in the rocking chair in the nursery covered in a blanket. Troy had been buried for two weeks but she still felt the loss like it had happened yesterday. She felt numb. Her baby was gone. She had prayed for his survival everyday. Every time she held him. Every time she fed him, she would pray for his survival. Virginia wouldn’t ever say it out loud, but she had been looking forward to being a mother. Troy had lived three months. Three months for Gods’ sakes, he should have been fine.
It was so strange, Virginia thought back. She always assumed death was a loud messy affair. She knew that when faced with it, she was going to resist it with all her strength. But with Troy, he’d fallen asleep in Henry’s office. And that had been it. Death, at least his death, was quiet. She was thankful for that.
Glen cried. Virginia hadn’t. She sat with him in the waiting room of the little doctor’s office holding his hand, trying to pretend she didn’t notice it shaking. He looked at her through his tears, not able to bring himself to accept the fact that she didn’t feel anything.
In all the years Virginia had known him, Glen had only cried three times. Once was when Lindsey had been sick in the hospital. The doctor (Henry as it was) had been certain she wouldn’t make it through the night. The next morning, to see his mother crying into some piece of cloth while sitting just outside the door. Glen knew. When he went into her room to say good bye to his only sibling, Lindsey was sitting up in the bed eating what was supposed to pass for raspberry jell-o and smiling. It was probably the only time Glen had cried from happiness.
The other time was when his dad had been in a boating accident and lost his legs. But that one incident was nothing, nothing, compared to the other two. His dad just smiled and said he counted himself lucky. After all, he still had his life.
The werehorse looked at the small clock set in a blue balloon being held by a tan teddy bear. Three thirty already. She might as well kiss sleep good bye for tonight.
“Glen… go to sleep. You have to work tomorrow.” Virginia spoke with out looking up. Glen was leaning against the wall outside the baby’s room. He took a deep breath and stepped inside.
“Ginny, come to bed.” Glen pleaded with her. In the pale light coming from the window, his hair and eyes took on an ether real quality, making them almost glow. Virginia took in his form the way his stomach muscles disappeared into his black pajama pants to She also noticed they where sitting very low on his hips; temptingly low.
She shook her head, dark hair falling around her shoulders. “I can’t sleep. But you should. Kyle and David aren’t going to let you take many more days off.”
Glen knelt in front of her lightly holding her face in his hands the way one might hold a fragile antique. “I’m worried about you.” Glen lightly kissed her. “Please come to bed. It’s… lonely with out you.” his smoky colored eyes gazed into Virginia’s dark chocolate stare. To her they would always be the color of spring storm clouds.
Glen looked down before standing and going back to bed. He heard the cloth fall before Virginia crossed the room and wrapped her arms around Glen’s waist. He froze in mid step and looked down at her slender arms as if they belonged to a Goddess. For him they did.
“Glen… I miss him… But I realize there was nothing that could have been done to help him.”
Glen turned around and held her for a moment, or had it been an eternity, before whispering, “Come to bed. We can talk about this later.” Virginia held his gaze before she smiled a little. The were-horse rose on her toes and kissed her affianced lightly, remembering the subtle reasons why she loved him so much. Glen returned her hug and her kiss. Holding her tightly as through those small actions alone he could convince her everything would be alright. Virginia broke first, her head lulling back as her knees went weak.
“I think your right,” She whispered shivers down his spine, “let’s go to bed.” They both knew she wasn’t talking about sleep.
Desiree looked a Nicolas as he slept secure in his bed. News of the Troy’s death had hit her hard and she hoped Glen and Virginia would be blessed with another baby soon. And she hopped it would be healthy. They were so deserving.
“Desiree, come on. You can’t watch him every minute of the day.” Kyle rubbed her back.
She smiled up at him, “I know.” Kyle had to offer her a hand so the woman could get up. She gave him a grateful smile and trudged after him to bed.
