Options of the Heart

Chapter 25 – Options of the Heart

“Fuji! Don’t turn away from me!” Devilin screamed at her as she stormed from the living room and began her way to her room. She went faster, hearing his footsteps behind her, and she would have run if it would not have made her look so foolish. She felt his hand tighten around her arm, spinning her around to face him, and now she had to look up into those red eyes that were redder rimmed than she had ever seen them. The effect was eerie. “Is this what you want? Your father to just leave the company, all of this so you will be engaged to Amatsu?”

Fuji tore her arm away from Devilin’s hand. She felt stabs in her heart, of anger, of hurt, of jealousy that Devilin would one day find someone else, or that Amatsu would one day find someone else. Either way her entire being was falling apart, but she knew what was right, what fate she had to accept, and which one she wished for just enough more to make a future of it. “Devilin, you do not understand how this is hurting me too, but Amatsu in business, and in love, is the more obvious choice for me.” Devilin stepped back, burned by her words. “Devilin, my father did this so I could be with Amatsu… and it hurts, I know, but I can’t continue to lie to myself any longer. I am… in love… with Amatsu. Only Amatsu.”

Fuji did not expect the stinging slap that resounded through the halls as Devilin’s hand slammed into her cheek and through her to the floor of the halls. Fuji gripped the wood beneath her in pain and clung with all of her might, thinking of anything else she could that would keep her from crying. The pain, physical and mental, was unbearable, but she had decided on this choice, she had decided… on Amatsu.

“Hit me… if you still need,” Fuji said weakly towards the floor. “Devilin, I love you, I just do not love you the way I should. I love Amatsu. I have always loved Amatsu. At one time I thought I truly loved only you, but he was always there, deep in my heart, awaiting me to return to him. He… he’s been so patient while I’ve been…”

“A slut,” Devilin spat the words, then leaned down so he could look into those watering aquamarine eyes. “It is about time someone told you the truth, Fuji. You have been nothing but selfish. This whole time while you acted like the pawn, you were really playing your own game. You would marry me because it would mean that you could have him and the business, but now you can marry him, have a larger share of the business, and not have to worry about being a cheating whore.”

Fuji could not help herself. The truth in the awful words had her anger lashing out, along with her foot, swiping under his feet and throwing him to his back with a painful, “Oomph!” as he struck. She moved till she was straddling him, holding him down, glaring down at his hating red devil eyes with her watering, clear, aquamarine eyes. What was sad was even through their rage she felt his need for her, his want, his desire, and she almost gave in. She almost let him take her one last time before she went to Amatsu and told him she chose only him, but it would only make his words that much more real.

“You can say all you want to me, if you are that angered that you are losing, but I have already talked to my mother and Teiyoku, and they agree that you still get a part of the business even though I am to marry Amatsu. They want you to continue to help run it, in case I shirk in my duties, they have little faith.”

Fuji was flipped with ease onto her back and now it was Devilin’s turn to be straddling her, glaring down at her and her nearly bared cleavage, she should learn to wear sweaters that did not have such buttons that popped so easily. “Don’t you see?” he asked, grinding his hips into hers, “It all means nothing to me without you.”

Fuji scrambled to fight him off of her, to regain her position back on top, but she was now on the losing side of strength and was trapped beneath his weight and his heady anger. “Devilin, I am in love with Amatsu.”

“Will he still have you?” Devilin nearly roared.

“Has he not done enough to prove to everyone he still wants me?” Fuji nearly cried out, for her heart still played the part of confusion. Did he still want her? This was not all just a charade, was it? When he had her back would he leave her in the cold again?

“Fine,” Devilin said, releasing Fuji hard enough she seemed to fall against the floor all over again, her head striking the ground with a loud thump. “Go to him, see if he really wants you.”

Devilin stood from the floor, waiting for Fuji to rise, but she sat there, humbled before him, looking up at him through aquamarine eyes he had fallen in love with. “What will you do if I don’t marry you?”

“You aren’t going to marry me,” Devilin spat, “so maybe you should rephrase that question.”

“What are you going to do with your life without me?” It sounded callous, but she could think of no other way in that moment to word her question.

“I am going to do what your mom and my uncle expect of me,” Devilin admitted. “I am going to run the other half of the business and wait for you to slip, and the moment you do, I am going to take it all out from under you. Until then, I believe we will make great business partners as I remind you every day of what you left behind.”

Devilin turned on his heel, ready to leave her behind, at least for now. He went into his room, slammed the door, turned the television up real loud, leaving Fuji to the fate she chose. And Fuji, full of ambition, drive, and love for a man she did not know would really take her for what she was, was standing, ready to go to him. She was, however, a little slow, slow enough that Devilin came rushing back out towards her, gripping her wrist, pulling her towards his bedroom. In a few moments of blind panic Fuji believed that he was going to try to seduce her, and she was afraid even more that she would give in. Instead he dragged her towards the television and pointed. Fuji’s mouth dropped as the truth was revealed to her, in blatant English that Yuki would never understand. Shinwa was not cheating on her… The cops that were leading him into the police station were proving that clearly.
