Twenty-four

Just dabbling with this, hoping to make some progress while I work on my other project.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Avery woke with a maelstrom of thoughts and questions in her head. She sat upright, hair all over the place, and read the lighted bedside clock.

Three-fifteen.

Scooting from the bed, she walked to the bathroom. Until having one back at her convenience, she had sort of forgotten how lovely it made life not to walk down a hall to a shared lav. With a sigh of appreciation, she spotted her bags. Avery brushed her hair, coiling it at her nape, then scrubbed her teeth, splashed her face and regarded her reflection.

Something had changed. She looked … Haunted.

Barefoot, she walked to the door leading to the hall. She could see no light. Then flashes of illumination danced under Malec’s door. Feeling raw and frightened, she dragged in a few deep breaths, and knocking.

Beeps and clicks.

Malec opened the door. “I did not expect you to join us so soon.” He placed his hand at the base of her back.

Avery saw Brom rise from the chair he had occupied in a distinctly masculine sprawl. “You two are doing what? Comparing notes?” She felt fragile and exposed. “I don’t know how to trust either of you.” Her hands began to tremble.

Brom replied as he walked to join them. “You know better, or you wouldn’t have given us anything to compare notes about. And, you know you’re safe.”

She had become so accustomed to them posturing and threatening, that seeing them comfortable in each other’s presence made her uneasy. “You can’t expect me to accept all this new information in one night. I’m a little raw.” She swallowed hard. “And, I don’t know what to believe.”

Malec’s hand rubbed the knotted muscles at the base of her back. She hadn’t become aware of the tension until he sought to ease it. “It’s snowing,” he said. “The ceiling over the pool is made of glass. Have you ever swam while it snowed?”

Avery looked up at him. “I live in Florida.”

Malec chuckled. “Would you like to, ma fetishe?”

Surrealism didn’t work well for her. Her brain almost cramped. “I don’t have a suit.”

Brom replied wryly, “What a shame.”

Malec added, “A tragedy.”

Her face flushed so hotly her nose perspired. “I swim naked? With both of you watching?”

Avery questioned her moxy as she stood beside a very beautifully tiled indoor pool. A light mounted on the outside structure allowed her to view the descent of heavy white flakes through the glass panes of the ‘ceiling’. Two large gas chandeliers hung from the supports separating sections of glass at either end of the pool.

“Let’s lighten the mood a bit,” Brom suggested, that attractive burr warming his words. “We could play a game.”

Avery watched the light on the water. “What game?”

“We get in with you,” he answered. “You pick which one to question first. If we don’t give you a response you like, you go to the other man. If we do, you kiss us before you leave to interrogate the other.”

She had so many questions she hardly knew where to begin. Naked, in the water with them both? “No anger,” she stipulated.

“Done,” Malec returned.

“My oath,” Brom pledged.

Avery whispered, “I don’t want chorine in my hair.”

Malec stepped closer. “I don’t use it. There is a charcoal filtration system.”

Left without complaint, she shivered. Avery removed her top. As she lifted it over her head, both men growled. “Don’t do that.”

“Darlin’, I can’t stop”

“Ma fetishe, I must.”

Arousal saturated her like a drug. With their eyes upon her, she took down her pants. Heartbeat hitching, she then hopped into the pool wearing her bra and panties. The silky water lapped at her waist. She turned and her hands flew to her mouth.

They faced each other, both in a single garment of silky pants. Avery watched them watch each other remove their covering. Both men had showy erections, Brom a little wider, Malec a little longer. Her mouth watered. Confused by the revelations, she turned and swam out into the pool.

She heard two bodies hit the pool. Then, the audible cleave of strong arms cutting the water. Avery retreated to the deep end, placing her back in the corner of marked fifteen feet. She watched them swim to her, a pair of swift athletes.

As they surfaced, both swiping water from their face, she held out a hand. “Wait. I’m scared.”

Malec suggested, “Let us carry you to the other end where you can wade out if displeased.”

On fire, terrified, she nodded. Brom and Malec turned onto their backs, creating a man raft. Brom invited, “Lay upon us, sweetheart.”

She let them help her to lie half atop each of them as they kicked to the ‘shallow’ end of the pool. The most intriguing light twisted on the bottom of the water. Her writer’s brain imagined mermaid patterns.

Brom pulled her to him, his hands at her waist as he held her aloft. “Shoot, darlin’”

“Why did you agree to the experiments?” Her legs gripped his hip despite her concern.

Brom’s big hands squeezed her thighs. “You feel so good, baby girl. I agreed because I believed in his research, and I wanted the benefits in my line of work.”

She pressed her lips to his jaw. He rumbled in appreciation and held her closer. Avery pushed off his hard thighs and went through the satiny water to Malec. He gathered her in his arms. “My fetishe.”

She struck his chest, sobbing. “You bastard! You should have told me!”

Malec cradled her to him. “Hit me all you like. I am no threat to you.”

Although she wished to continue questioning, Avery broke. She sobbed. The two men surrounded her in strong arms and reassurance. She punched and jabbed ineffectually. Then, surrendered to crying.

She barely heard their words through her haze of shock. Too much new reality to absorb at once. The physical comfort began very sweetly, and then slowly, the caresses became more deliberate. It pulled her back from the precipice, conjuring powerful response in her body.

Malec wrapped her legs around his waist, but her bottom rested in Brom’s hands. Malec leaned down to kiss her mouth as Brom’s lips settled warmly on her shoulder. He swept aside her hair, or maybe Malec did. Brom’s lips traveled up her neck and to her ear, teasing and murmuring in that seductive burr.

Suddenly, the enormity of what it meant to have two lovers became crystal clear.
