Chapter 24
Eric walked through the open double doors, his eyes adjusting to familiar surroundings. To other people, this place was the best of what life could offer. As his eyes scanned the foyer, his mind drifted back to the day he was able to escape. The past danced before his eyes, from his mom whispering to him to leave and be free, to Orlando crying and begging him not too. When he walked out the door that day, Vin had grabbed his arm in a squeezing grip. If you say anything to anyone about me, you’ll wish to do you hadn’t, for they will find your brother in tiny little pieces in every state and it will be all your fault.
“Eric,” Karl whispered in his ear.
Eric jerked, the memory fading. “What?”
Karl smiled a little. “Come, Eric. I know your brother and mother will be happy to see you.”
Eric nodded. He glanced around until he spotted Jake. His friend’s eyes were large and his mouth ajar. Any other time Eric would have laughed but for some reason it bothered him to see Jake like this. He didn’t want his friend suck into the power of his…of Vin.
Eric walked over, laying a hand on Jake’s shoulder. “Jake?”
Startled, Jake turned, his eyes questioning.
“Come on, Jake. I need to find Orlando,” Eric said, walking past him and heading for the stairs.
“Eric.” Karl stopped him. “You know Jake can’t go any further, not until Vin gives the ok.”
Jake’s eyes held confusion. “What?”
“Yeah. Come this away,” Karl said, raising his arm toward a door off to the side.
“I see nothing changed,” Eric replied, narrowing his eyes.
“You know nothing never changes, Eric. Not here, not ever,” Karl said, sympathy hinting his voice.
“I’ll wait with you,” Eric said as he started to walk past Jake.
“No,” Jake said as he grabbed his arm. “You need to see your brother. I’ll catch up with you when I can.” Jake smiled but his inside were clenching.
Eric stared into Jake’s dark eyes, which were so much like his. He knew Jake was right, but his feelings were torn. He knew his first priority should be to find his little brother and to make sure he as all right, but he wanted to stay and protect his roommate and best friend as well.
“Go on,” Jake smiled, nodding his head. “This isn’t the last time you’re going to see me,” Jake said while laughing.
Eric grunted at the comment; if Jake only knew what Vin was capable of. “Let me find Orlando and I’ll be back.”
“Okay,” Jake said as he turned and went with Karl.
Eric watched them until they disappeared behind the door. As Eric turned towards the stairs, his worst nightmare stood a few feet away from him.
Eric’s body went rigid as his eyes locked with Vin’s. Eric knew he was going to have to see the bastard but not this soon; he needed time to prepare.
The room dove into an eerie silence as they stared at each other. It could have been several seconds, minutes or even hours, neither would have noticed.
Faint sounds of laughter drifted in from the outside, breaking the spell that had been woven between the two men.
Vin’s eyes drifted over his stepson. The boy had grown since the last time he saw him. It seemed the boy was no longer a boy, but a man with a man’s body. Vin’s eyes narrowed, his nostrils flaring. He didn’t like it, not one fucking bit.
Eric stared at Vin and all the old memories came rushing back. He hated this man that was standing in front of him with a passion and would kill him in a heartbeat if he could.
Another burst of laughter came floating through the room. Eric turned his head to the sound; his body froze. It couldn’t be who he thought it was.
Vin sneered at Eric’s shocked expression. “Look what the cat dragged in.”
Eric stiffened at Vin’s voice, his head snapping back around, his eyes narrowing upon the man that destroyed his family.
“You’d like that wouldn’t you?” Eric sneered out, “Me not showing up, you bastard?”
Cold gray eyes met dark glittering eyes, both filled with hatred for each other.
“You know what’s expected of you,” Vin finally said, breaking the silence and ignoring Eric’s question with practiced ease.
Eric’s jaw set and his hands fisted. “Where is he?”
“In the backyard.” Vin’s voice was flat, devoid of all emotion.
Eric started past Vin, heading for the backyard. He needed to get away before he did something stupid, like kill the bastard.
Vin watched Eric as he walked past. ‘Just fucking great,’ Vin thought as he walked to his office and yanked the door open, ‘can anything else go wrong?’
