Chapter 23
Vin slammed the phone down, his face drawn tight. He wanted everyone out now. He groaned as a sharp pain ripped though his head.
What the hell was he thinking when he decided to listen to Sean? How could he let strangers into his home? Vin muttered incoherently as he stomped around his desk, heading to the door.
Yanking the door open, he yelled out. “Ian!”
Slamming the door, he went back around his desk and sat down. Closing his eyes and sighed. Putting his head in his hands, he tried to block out the phone call he had just received.
God, he must be getting soft in his old age, or going crazy for letting Sean talk him into this party.

Ian was seeing to the last of the preparations when a guard approached him.
“Mr. Diesel wants to see you,” the young man said.
Ian watched the young man headed back to his post without another word. He could already guess what Vin wanted him for and it wasn’t good.
Ian slipped away and headed for Vin’s office. As he arrived at the hard oak door, he lightly tapped on it. When he didn’t receive an answer, he gently opened the door. Slipping inside, he saw his employer muttering to himself. He knew everyone was stressed out, especially Vin, and wondered if the man had finally cracked.
+
Vin dialed Sean’s number. He needed his right hand man now. After several rings, he cursed and slammed the phone done. “Where in the hell is everyone?” Vin roared.
Ian cleared his throat.
Vin’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. “What in the hell took you so long?” Vin demanded.
Ian raised one eyebrow; his face remained passive. “I came as soon as I was told.”
Vin snorted, “I want everyone out of here!”
Ian saw the seriousness of Vin’s expression and knew something was up.
“Everyone is leaving, Sir.” Ian’s voice remained calm, but his mind was in turmoil. He wanted to ask Vin what had happened but knew the powerful man wouldn’t answer him.
“Good! Now I want you to get all the servants and spare guards to search every inch of this house. Do you understand?” Vin snarled out.
“Yes, Sir.” Ian made to turn around but Vin’s voice stopped him.
“Have you seen Sean?”
“I think he’s already arrived, Sir.” Ian’s voice was careful.
He was surprised that Sean wasn’t here with Vin. And if he wasn’t here, then there was only other place he would be. And that was where Orlando was. Damn, like he didn’t have enough to worry about.
“He’s already here.” Vin’s voice became deadly. “Hmm…I guess he’s sniffing around my boyfriend again.” His eyes narrowed. “I want him located and brought to me now!” Vin roared, causing the pounding in his head to increase.
“Yes, Sir.” Ian left before Vin could say anything else. The man was about to crack if he hadn’t already. Maybe if he found Sean he could calm Vin down before he had a stroke.
+
Ian headed up the stairs. He needed to get to the master bedroom and find Sean. As he neared the top landing, he heard the guards laughing.
As they spotted Ian, their laughter died. Ignoring them as he passed by, he didn’t have time to stop and correct their behavior. He needed to get to Sean.
“If you’re looking for Mr. Bean or Orlando, they’re not in there,” one of the guards said between breathless snickers.
“What do you mean?” Ian asked as he swirled around, eyes filled with question.
“They left a few minutes ago.”
“Where to?”
“I heard them say something about going to the backyard,” the guard said, as he tried to keep a straight face.
“What’s so funny?” Ian snapped. He was loosing his patience, fast.
“Nothing.” Both guards straightened. They weren’t scared of the old man, but they knew Ian had Vin’s ear and if Ian went to Vin…let’s just say it wouldn’t be good.
Ian headed back down. He needed to find Sean and get Orlando back up to his room before Vin found out, or hell was going to break loose.
As Ian headed to the wall of French doors that lined the living room, he could hear the laughter before he actually came upon the scene. Ian stepped dead in his tracks, his eyes bugged out as his jaw fell open. There it was for the whole world to see: the Angel of Death laughing as an over zealous puppy chased Orlando around the backyard.
Ian shook his head; this couldn’t be happening.
As he walked outside to call Orlando, Sean saw and intercepted.
“How could you do this?” Ian’s heated whisper filled Sean ear.
“Do what?” Sean’s smile faded.
“Give Orlando a puppy. You know Vin won’t let him keep it.”
“He’ll get to keep it.” Sean’s voice became calm but no less deadly.
“I never knew you could be this cruel, especially to Orlando.” Ian’s voice became hard. He always respected Sean, even though he was the Angel of Death. He was always good to Orlando: bringing him gifts, making him smile and just spending time with the boy.
Sean tried to calm down. He knew Ian was just thinking of Orlando. He also knew the boy would be devastated if the dog was taken away. “I promise you, Ian, Orlando will be able to keep the pup.”
Ian shook his head. He knew Sean and he also knew Vin. “I need Orlando to go upstairs and you are needed in Vin’s office. Something has happened. Vin is very agitated.”
Sean snorted. “He’s always agitated.”
“Yes, but something has happened. He’s more nervous and agitated than normal. And the way he is right now, if he sees Orlando out of his room, there’s no telling what will happen.”
“Alright, I’ll go.” Sean sighed, “I need to tell him about the puppy anyway.”
“No need. I can see with my own fucking eyes.” Vin said as he stared at Orlando.
Sean closed his eyes, “Damn,” he muttered, “just my luck.”
+
Ian stiffened at the sound of Vin’s voice. His eyes still followed Orlando’s radiant face as the puppy chased him around. Ian closed his eyes; he wanted to block out the voice that could destroy Orlando’s happiness.
“I want to know what in the hell is going on here?” Vin’s deadly voice filled the silence.
Sean turned, his eyes connecting with Vin’s face. But to Sean’s surprise, those gray eyes weren’t focused on him, they were focused on Orlando.
Vin’s eyes were following Orlando; he had never seen the boy look so happy. His eyes narrowed as jealousy took root.
“I was about to find you,” Sean said as he tried to pull Vin’s attentions toward him.
Vin turned his head toward Sean. “I bet you were.”
Sean said nothing to Vin’s comment. He needed to get Vin’s attention off Orlando and onto him.
“Watch Orlando, Ian,” Sean said as he turned and was about to enter the house. “I’ll be in your study, Vin. We have business to discuss.”
Vin watched Sean leave. As the door closed, Vin’s eyes turned to Orlando, his eyes drinking in the sight.
+
Ian stared straight ahead during the conversation. He watched Orlando, who was oblivious to anything but the puppy that was chasing him. Ian eyes turned sad. He knew it would kill Orlando if he had to give up the puppy.
“Watch him, don’t leave for anything,” Vin said as he turned and stomped into the house.
Startled by Vin’s words, all Ian could say was “Yes, Sir,” his voice quiet and sad.
