Chapter Twenty-Three
Karma and Greg were sadden with the news of Mike’s sudden death, but at the same time pleased that I had decided to be his heir. Karma then explained to me why she didn’t want to be the queen of the faeries, and it didn’t make me too pleased about my decision.
“I never wanted to be queen because they have less respect for female rulers than male rulers. All the females that have ruled have been ruthless, and I’m too kind to do that.”
“Are you saying that I can be ruthless? That you know I will be.”
“Yes, Alexia, you can be. I think that’s going to make you a great fey queen.”
I sat contemplating this for a while, listening to them talk about names for the baby, who was going to move into whose house, and the inevitable wedding. It was a weird conversation to be sitting in on, but I really had no where else to go at the moment.
I had been pulled into the conversation a few hours later and asked what I would do in this situation in ways of a wedding and was pleased when the door opened and Erin popped her head into the room. “Excuse me, Karma, Greg, but I need Alexia.”
“I’m just gonna head home after this, Karm. I’ll talk to you later.” I gave her and Greg both a hug and let them get back to their argument, Greg wanting a big wedding and Karma wanting a small one. As soon as I was in the hall, I looked at Erin. “What’s up?”
“Blood tests came back. Dr. Gordon requests your presence in his office. Now, preferably. His words, not mine.” I nodded and headed toward the one place I had been too many times to count, though this time I hadn’t done anything wrong.
I opened the door at his gruff response to my knock and walked in, flopping into a chair without being told to do so. “You wanted to see me about the blood tests, Dr. Gordon.”
“Yes, Alexia.” He paused and then looked at me, angry. “How the fuck are you related to Carmichael Douglas?”
“I’m taking this to mean the blood tests proved that he’s my father?”
“Yes, they did, and you know it. How is it possible though? You’re not fey. You’re tall and have normal toned skin. How?”
“First off, I am fey, I just hide it very well. Second off, how do you know what my mother could have been? She could have given me all my visible traits.” I smiled at him, pissing him off even more.
“I don’t care if you mother was the best fucking witch in the world and made sure her traits were dominant, I don’t see how you can be related to him.”
Anger flared in me and I hadn’t even realized I was angry. Dragonflies appeared out of no where and started to buzz around Dr. Gordon’s head, threatening him. “Don’t question my relationship with my father, Dr. Gordon. I have powers that most fey could only dream about.”
I stood abruptly and left the office, noticing the dragonflies disappear at my exit from the room. It was a little eerie knowing that I had conjured up those little fey powered creatures, but at the same time, it was fascinating and I wanted to know so much more.
I shook my head at Erin as she raised her eyebrow at me and continued out the door, getting into my car and heading home. I had so many questions I needed answer and no one to answer them, so I would just sleep and hope it came to me. Or even better, I’d use Kingston to his full advantage.
I pulled into the driveway, that thought in mind, and walked up to the front stoop before realizing that the sun had set a while back. Cassie and Andreas would probably be here and wanting to know if I was okay. Then I would have to tell them everything.
I sighed and opened the door, finding Ian, Kingston, Matt, Gabe, Cassie, Andreas, and Harper all piled in the living room, talking. Silence spread throughout the room quickly as they realized I had walked into the door and no one spoke for what felt like ages, though was only a few minutes.
“Hi, guys.” It was all I could get out. I was too confused and upset to think of anything properly at the moment.
Kingston was the first to realize something was wrong. He moved from the couch beside Ian and walked over to me, wrapping his arms around me. I responded by wrapping my arms around his waist and burying my head in his shoulders, proving to everyone that something was wrong. “Are you okay, Lexi, baby?”
I sobbed against his shoulder, having not thought about having to tell them. “Mike’s dead.”
There was a collective gasp from the group and they all moved to comfort me. I let both Cassie and Andreas hug me but jumped back as Harper touched me, shaking my head. “Don’t, Harper.”
My whole body tingling from his touch and I had no idea what the hell it had been from. I spotted the tattoo on my hand glow slightly and frowned, stripping out of my jacket and hearing another gasp from the group as I realized that no only was the vine glowing, it was moving under my skin.
“Control of all things of nature.” It came from my mouth without me even thinking it and I turned my eyes to Ian, the only safe Lycan for me in the room.
I tilted my head to the side and searched my body for a power I hadn’t had before. I found it and pulled it to the forefront, throwing it out at Ian and willing him to change.
His wolf burst forth from his body in an instant, leaving him standing before me as a large black wolf, green eyes the only part I recognized. He whimpered and bowed at my feet, begging me not to hurt him again. I frowned, reading his thoughts, and knelt in front of him.
His flinch told me I had done something wrong. I laid my hand on his head, feeling that tingling, and sighed. “Sorry, Ian. I had to know what it was. I didn’t know that it would hurt you.”
“Oh course it hurts, you dumb bitch.” Matt’s voice pulled me from the reverie I was having about the power in my hands, and I looked up at him. “It’s not supposed to be pleasant. We’re getting ripped apart to let a creature we have no control over tear out of us.”
I leaned down and kissed Ian on the head, feeling him lick my fingers in forgiveness before I stood to face Matt. “You’ve just become experiment number two.”
I pulled the power to the front again and threw it at him, though as soon as it was around him, I stopped the shift, willing peace, ease, and harmony into his shift. He gasped just before shifting into a beautiful hawk, larger than he should have been. “Now, Matt, did that hurt?”
Matt landed on a chair and looked down at his body like he had expected to still be human. He looked back up at me, shock showing in his very human eyes, and he shook his head. He shuttered and shifted himself back into human form, standing in the middle of the room naked. “How the fuck did you do that?”
“Honestly, Matt, I have no fucking clue.” I felt the tree on my back move and shook my head, walking toward my room. “I’m sorry, guys, but I’m so not in the mood to be around others right now.”
I closed my bedroom door hard behind me and stood in front of the full length mirror in my closet, stripping out of my clothes and looking at the vines that ran along my entire body. I shook my head and crawled into bed, letting sleep be the reprieve I had from the horrors of the day.
I felt Kingston join me about an hour later and let the warmth of his body fill me with peace. Tomorrow was another day. Hopefully a better day.
