Chapter 23
It had been easier to find out what his father had done than he had hoped. In his father’s at home office, he’d found folders containing each offer from the various schools. Stateson Tech was sitting at the top.
The call had been awkward and strange to say the least. Coach Stuben had been so happy to hear from him, but quickly his effervescent attitude slipped into monosyllabic resignation once Warren explained his father’s mistake.
No amount of haggling or finagling would change Warren’s mind about this. He hung up and returned the folder to wear his father had it. The room was so ordered—stylishly masculine with a touch of too much rigidity. Warren never felt comfortable here. It was the only place in the house that he simply hated going. Memories of countless talks with his father—lectures about the importance of his future and how he couldn’t be a disappointment.
Despite the pride in his father’s voice, he’d never felt that the man had ever loved him for simply being his son. He was a commodity. Wasn’t he?
Feeling far too melancholy for an entire lifetime, Warren left his father’s office and the house. As he cranked up his Explorer, he failed to notice the black pick-up approaching down the block. The truck pulled over as the driver watched Warren’s SUV back out of the drive way. Then, it began to follow.
As Warren pulled up in front of Jace’s place, he sat for a minute with the engine off fuming. This should have been a proud moment right? Finally, he’d taken control of his own destiny. The question of which was ‘now what’? As it stood, he wasn’t going to college—at least not going to Stateston Tech on a football scholarship.
His head snapped up at the sudden rapping on his window. Warren’s head whipped around and he immediately found himself smiling at Jace through the window. He cut off the engine and opened the door.
“Hey.” He said.
“Hey yourself.” Jace leaned on the open door. “So, I was wondering if you planned on coming in, because just sitting out here staring into space is very creepy.”
Warren rubbed the back of his neck and dipped his head in embarrassment. Red stained his cheeks. “Yeah, I was coming. Just thinking for a minute…”
Jace crossed his arms over his chest. “Penny for your thoughts?” The gesture actually made him look skinner than usual and Warren couldn’t fight the smirk that tugged at his lips.
He learned a while ago to not call Jace ‘skinny’. Even if he was in fact, skinny.
“Aw, honey. I didn’t know you cared.” Warren teased, while wrapping an arm around Jace’s shoulders and pulling him close.
“Prick,” Jace muttered without any malice behind it. He stepped into Warren’s embrace and didn’t even say anything about the nice body odor his boyfriend had worked up or the fact that they were in the front yard.
Their lips met in a sweet kiss. All the tension of the day, of the past month, seemed to bleed out of his body. That was the natural effect of capturing Jace’s plush lips with his own. A moan arose. Warren blushed again realizing the sound had escaped from him.
Jace pulled away to get a better look at Warren’s face. “Okay, how does this sound? Let’s go inside and you can take a shower in my ultra sweet bathroom, because as much as I love you, it pains me to say that you smell not so fresh or so clean. And--” He held up a hand to silence Warren’s attempt to cut him off.
“And, I really don’t want to kill any of my neighbors with our hot boy on boy action.”
Warren snuck a quick grope of Jace’s ass. “We’d be doing them favors.” He smirked.
The times when Warren was completely free and lighthearted were few and far between. Jace found himself savoring the moment, knowing that whatever had led to this state of restfulness had to be pretty significant. “Why, Mr. Brick, is that a sense of humor I’m detecting?”
Warren began to steer them towards the door. “Yes, dear. Now, let’s get inside before I give something else that’s shocking.” He swooped in for a quick peck on Jace’s neck and they went in the house.

Since Sheila Howard wasn’t home, Warren convinced Jace to help him in the shower. That help actually led to both of them being dirty. From Warren’s last stay with Jace, he still had clothes around. Because they’d tried the clothes swap experiment and it only served to make the two of them laugh at how ridiculous they looked in each other’s clothes. Jace looked like he was drowning in Warren’s clothes and Warren looked like he was wearing children’s clothes.
Though, Warren was a major turn on to see Jace wearing his letterman jacket or his jersey.
Freshly showered and settled, they made themselves comfortable on the living room couch rather than Jace’s bed. Better to be safe than sorry in case Jace’s mom came home early again. They had their smorgasbord of junk food and various leftovers, because Warren needed to continuously eat, while Jace just had a fast metabolism.
“So, tell me what made you so happy.”
Warren dropped the slice of cold pizza from his mouth. “ I found out my dad confirmed my bid offer with Stateson Tech--”
“What?” Jace asked in alarm.
“It doesn’t matter. I called Coach Stuben and let him know my Dad was mistaken.” Jace immediately lost much of his worry.
“What does that mean for you now? What about college?”
Warren shrugged.“I don’t know. I just want to go somewhere where I can just be me without worrying about us or someone finding out.”
“Fat chance, War.” Jace stroked Warren’s dirty blonde hair. “ I wish you could go with me.”
Warren had relaxed into Jace’s stroking. “Why not?”
“Why not what?”
“Why can’t I go to school with you?” Warren sat up, dropping his elbows on his knees. “Your school has a football team?”
“Yeah, a really sucky one.”
“My test scores are pretty good. If I could talk to the Coach there…maybe.” He stopped. “Do you think this is even worth it? I mean would any football coach be okay with his QB being a butt pirate.”
Jace slapped him on the back of the head and glared at him. “You’re an idiot sometimes, but who isn’t. I think any coach you call up would be grateful to have you.”
Warren ducked his head and looked up at Jace through his lashes. “If the couch would talk to me, would you go with me?”
Jace kissed his nose. “I’d go anywhere with you, honey.”
Warren snorted. “Now, who’s the sappy one? What was that a line from the Backstreet Boys?”
Another smack was doled out. “Prick.” Jace muttered. It didn’t matter Warren was his and he was happy. That’s all Jace wanted for him.
