TWENTY-TWO
"Eilla, open the door," Theo plead. He was standing outside of Eilla's car, open palm pressed against the driver's side window, trying to coax the distraught mess crumpled in the front seat. Eilla could not bring herself to lift her head. Theo's tone had become more sympathetic, almost comforting. "Come on, I'm sorry."
It took a few more moments for Theo to realize the car was unlocked, and he ran to the passenger side to hop in. "Eilla, come on." He shut the door loudly behind him, reaching to the stereo to turn down the crackling static. "I'm sorry I was so blunt, but come on. Come on!" He nearly shouted, as if to convince not only her but also himself that he was being completely rational.
Eilla sniffed deeply and tried to compose herself. "Why would Ben want me to quit?" She asked through weak gasps. Tears rolled slowly, but still constantly, down her cheeks. Theo sighed, it was hard to see her so upset. The blue was missing from her eyes and they were left a hollow gray, surrounded by angry red lids.
"We've been talking about it since he thought he was moving," Theo tried to explain calmly. "You two haven't talked about it? Don't take this the wrong way, but, don't you think this is a good idea? You're going to be free and clear and you're going to be so much happier."
Eilla took a moment to ponder. Why was Theo so determined to get rid of her help? Why was Ben so willing to let him? Since when did she become such a burden to Theo? She looked at Theo, sitting in her car, leaning back in the seat, head cocked over his left shoulder staring at her. And he didn't look angry, he looked concerned. As if he really believed this would make her happier. "Why didn't you say anything before?" She whispered. Her tears had trailed off, and she wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand. Theo quickly reached up to clear the trails she had missed.
"Do you want to know the truth?" Theo asked, fingers still lingering on her cheek. Eilla nodded slowly, leaning carefully away from his touch without seeming to obvious that it was uncomfortable. He only reached further, letting his thumb rest gently against her jaw. Eilla could not process the touch, she was consumed with confusion. "The truth is I..."
Theo readjusted himself in the seat, leaning in closer to her. Eilla's eyes became wide, her lips parted, and she instictively. His hand left her cheek, wrapping tightly around the nape of her neck. His lips became a tight, straight line as he breathed deeply through his nostrils, building the courage to say anything. Eilla was motionless, even more unable to comprehend what Theo was trying to say.
"Theo, stop it," Eilla said, shrugging her shoulder.
"Sorry," he said sheepishly, letting his hand drop from her neck. His right hand immediately flew to the door handle, with a dull thud the door unlatched and he shut it with a frustrated slam. Eilla sat still for a few seconds watching him walk purposfully back into the store.
"What the hell?" Eilla mused. Now more confused than upset, she was determined to figure out what was going on with Theo. She exited the car herself, following Theo's path.
Back in the office Theo had begun pacing, hands resting on the top of his head, staring at the ceiling. Eilla appeared in the doorway, exhausted and almost at the end of her patience. "Theo, what is going on with you?" She asked.
"I want you to leave." He said without even acknowledging her entrance.
"I'm not leaving until you give me a good reason to," Eilla shouted. "Quit avoiding my questions. Tell me why you want me out so badly." Her frustration was turning into fury.
"I need you to leave now." Theo said as evenly as before, still pacing, still not looking in Eilla's direction.
"WHY?" Eilla screamed.
Before Eilla could even finish the scream, she was unable to breathe. Theo had somehow spanned the room in what seemed like an instant, and his lips were pressed furiously against hers. Eilla was pushed violently against the back wall of the office, her body not responding to her thoughts, as she wanted to push Theo away with all of her might, but it felt as though her brain was shrinking with the force Theo was putting on her. She tried to gasp, turn her head, move her arms, but Theo had hindered these actions quickly. Finally, after what seemed like eternity, she was able to step to the side and watch him collide with the wall.
"What the FUCK?" Eilla screamed.
"I'm... I'm so sorry." Theo stammered. His hands were on his hips, shaking his head and staring at the floor.
