Five years later, they were still friends and the equivalent of the only family the other had. Though, they still fucked occasionally. Much to the chagrin of Augustus’ straight-lace fiancé.
Augustus was born the last child of six. He was spoiled, rich, and southern. Discovering that he was a naturally P-positive and therefore a barrier, they worried that he would disgrace the family name with his propensity to spread free love.
Like his middle sister, Augustus had a reputation for being a bit eccentric and flighty. With the P-positive hormones being discovered a generation before, it was easier for his old money Southern parents and grandparents to accept his differences. Though he did make it very hard.
Some would say he was cursed with his mother’s beauty pageant looks. No, Augustus used his golden loose curls and sapphire blue eyes to get his way. While many thought him ditzy, he was actually very smart and cunning, using people’s underestimations of him to his advantage.
When his last escapade landed him as the heir to an old Whiskey baron’s fortune, his family was not happy, mostly due to the deceased Whiskey baron’s estranged wife and children trying to sue Augustus in return. They settled and Augustus received a nice sum of money. Though, his parents had finally had it with his philandering and wanton ways. The last thing they wanted was for him to return home shamed, penniless, and pregnant.
His other siblings were all much older and professionals either working for the family company or conquering the world in their respective fields of medicine, law, or hard-nosed academia. Stubborn, yes. But he wasn’t willing to lose his family and his much larger inheritance over his youthful indiscretions.
They come up with a compromise, which came in the form of Augustus selecting a suitor from a group selected by his parents. The elder Reids figured Augustus would be someone else’s problem soon enough and hopefully married life would temper their wayward child.
Between his great American tour that ultimately landed him in the City and in the companionship of Logan Kane, Augustus returned to Virginia sporadically to meet these lucky men his parents had roped into dating him. Either to boring or full of themselves, Augustus found most of them to be.
At his parents’ anniversary dinner, Augustus accidentally met Caldwell Walsh. He instantly found the soldier insufferable and the officer found him to be nothing but a brat. With Caldwell, Augustus could tease and have the pleasure of the military officer resisting. He was an officer on the fast track to becoming one of the Army higher-ups, but he was a gentlemen only when the situation called for it. Beneath his reserved exterior, he was a guy that drove his motorcycle on dark roads and challenged Augustus to drinking contests, where the odds were never in his favor.
Caldwell understood realistic expectations. One day after the war was over, he wanted to come home, get married, and have kids. Until then, he didn’t expect Augustus to wait for him and be celibate for some indeterminable amount of time. Likewise, Augustus expected the same from him.
It was love and it was surprisingly convenient.
Yet, the first time Logan and Caldwell met resulted in a fist fight and every subsequent meeting resulted in one of them being injured. The best friend and the boyfriend hated each other. Caldwell despised Logan’s arrogance and rebellious attitude that clashed naturally with rigid military training. Logan teased that he could see the stick literally sticking out of Caldwell’s ass. It didn’t help relations between them that Logan also frequented Augustus’ bed.
