Five More Years Later

Chapter 22 – Five More Years Later

“Doesn’t this remind you of Christmas like when we were kids?” Bliss asked, sitting on Fuji and Amatsu’s couch and admiring the professionally done Christmas tree that the kids were busy making a mess out of by adding their own decorations or tearing some down.

“Except that you and I were usually in the back drinking or smoking, or God forbid, making out, and Ashe was raping Rhapsody that one year, oh and lets not forget we for the most part all hated each other,” Shu pointed out as he unstraightened the tie that Mercedes had worked hard to straighten several times already.

“Isn’t it great that things change?” Harmony asked, leaning over the couch and kissing her big brother’s cheek and then her big sister’s.

“Who’s changed? I sure need a drink,” Bliss pointed out, watching Link with their two-year-old twins, bouncing the girl on his knee and straightening his son’s sunglasses.

“And I’m sure Ashe and Rhapsody are somewhere in the back…” Shu looked about, seeing no sign of the siblings.

“And I still hate pretty much everyone,” Harmony agreed, plopping down on the couch in the middle of the two elder Memeshii children. “Wow, I guess not much has changed.”

“Well, sure they did,” Bliss laughed. “You actually turned into a proper lady, and your kids aren’t all screwed up or anything.”

“And I’m married!” Shu declared happily, as he had been doing for the past four years. Mercedes still was unhappily unable to become pregnant, but if anything Shai had offered many times to give him one of Harmony’s children, who were sweet, but Shai was growing weary in her older age and taking care of children was not her first priority. Harmony, who was just starting to find her standing in the world, would soon be taking them from her mom for good and taking care of them, but until that day Shai grew more tired and Kyoei grew more helpful. It would be a nice Christmas gift for Shai to have a vacation in the Bahamas, which was exactly what her children had bought her. Shai already was enjoying a tan while Harmony babysat her own daughters. Ashe helped out financially, but for the most part was not a father figure, and in a lot of ways it was how Harmony wanted it.

“Yuna has a boyfriend who adores her, despite her illegitimate son and her bitchy nature,” Harmony explained, looking to Yuna who sat in the corner with her mother and father and boyfriend.

“Taryn and Tiera are planning their wedding.”

“Darrke and Lilis are expecting a baby brother for little Lily, who is not really so little any more…” Lily, who turned ten this year, was the eldest of the group of children running around and probably would be the only mature one in the family. She would rather read a book than play games, but everyone loved their ‘sister’ anyway and the children swarmed to her.

“Bliss and Link haven’t argued in twenty-four hours.”

“Sora gets out of jail in one year.”

“Yeah, what do you think will happen with that?” Shu and Bliss and Harmony exchanged looks among themselves.

“Rhapsody will remain undecided for the rest of her life and have the joys of two men,” Harmony hinted lasciviously.

“No, she’ll finally make the right choice and go with Sora,” Shu said, waving Harmony’s theory off.

Bliss laughed raucously. “Listen, Fuji named them Rhapsody and Ashe after two lovers in a series she read,” she pointed out. “Rhapsody and Ashe were meant to be together then and they are meant to be together now.”

It was a familiar argument, one they found hard to let go. Maybe growing up was getting to be scary for all of them. They all had made so many decisions and gone through so much, and there was still so much of their lives to go.

Why can this story not have a happy or definitive ending? Because their lives will keep changing. That is something they have all come to accept. Now the question remains: will they all make it through this with each other, or without?

That is only for them to decide.

A/N: Why the non-defnitive ending? Maybe I'm leaving it up to your imagination. Maybe something else will crop up again one day. Either way, this is how this story ends. =)

I'm a cruel author sometimes.
