chapter twenty-two
Shane looked at his watch, it read six forty-five. His plane was supposed to leave in an hour and he didn’t want to miss it. He decided to try calling Sam again and see if her phone was still turned off. He reached inside the inner pocket in his jacket and pulled out his phone. Dialing her number he got the same answer as always. He thought he’d try the apartment again. But when the phone started ringing again and Shane didn’t get any answers he started freaking out, ‘what if something bad had happened to her? What if-’
“Hello,” A voice came from the end of the line.
Shane took a deep breath after figuring out it must be Ann “Hi Ann,”
“Hey,” she answered shortly and he knew she must have known it was him on the phone. But that meant Sam was there.
“Please Ann don’t hang up. I just want to know if she’s home safe.”
“Yes,”
“Okay, is she okay? I mean-”
“Yes.”
“Thank you Ann, please try to take good care of her.”
“Okay, bye”
He let out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding almost all day long! He was afraid that something bad had happened to her like the last time, he was scared to death; if it was possible, but he couldn’t do anything but call her. Irien couldn’t find any earlier flights and driving would have probably taken a lot of time.
He sat there waiting for his flight, wondering what he was going to do with Sam.
*************
“You mean that Shane actually did that?” Ann asked with wide eyes.
“Yes, God Ann I saw him with my own eyes,” she got up and walked to the window, she opened the curtains and looked at the city “saw the way her arms were wrapped around his waist, how he reacted to her embrace.”
“But Thia, you should have confronted him. I mean I don’t think that he would do something like that right after you two got married, and I mean after as in an hour maximum.” Ann said from back on the couch that they had been sitting on for the last two and a half hours talking. Thia had told her about her week with Shane and about his family. She told her about her past and about how she’d met Shane, about the wedding!
“Oh I don’t know Ann, back then I was completely shocked. I never meant to disappear and leave them behind. I wanted to get out of the house, I thought he didn’t love me, I thought he only…” she turned to face Ann with a blushed face “I thought he only married me because I didn’t agree on sleeping with him before that.”
“What? What kind of a stupid idea is this?” Ann asked quickly “Come on Thia you know better than that.”
“I know. Looking back now I know I must have waited and talked it through with him. But I was scared, scared of losing him just like I lost my parents, scared of being the reason for losing everything.”
“Honey,” Ann said as she got up and walked to her friend “you got nothing to do with your parent’s death okay? It was an accident, you were only three Thia.”
“I- oh I was scared that’s all I can tell you. I didn’t notice where I was after Matt took me in his car because I was so wrapped up in my own feelings and when I finally realized we were heading out of town I was afraid. I asked him to pull over and let me out but he said that Shane was going to find me if I stayed in town. Back then I didn’t know how to think, so I let him drive and rested my head on the back of the seat.”
Thia said as she closed her eyes and remembered how it felt to wake up and find it so dark in the car and to find Matt kissing her face.
“What are you doing?” she said jumping in her place “Matt?!!”
“Sam, I can’t help it. You are so beautiful and I can’t really help it.” He was inches away from her and his arms were on each side of her seat.
“Matt please, let me go. You don’t mean this, I’m your best friend’s wife!!” she exclaimed.
“Yeah? My best friend’s wife? He doesn’t love you like I do Sam. He’s got everything, his money, his family, Jenny and you are one thing he doesn’t have to have. We can be together Sam. We’ll be great together, I’ll never treat you bad.” His hands started to travel up her legs under her short skirt and he started kissing her neck.
“Please don’t,” she screamed, looking outside the window she couldn’t see well. But she knew they were defiantly out of town and on a deserted road. Sam felt tears in her eyes as she felt his other hand trying to open her blouse “no please.” She struggled to move but he was stronger and larger than she was, she could only move her right hand as her left was stuck in between them.
“Come on Sam, why not?” he asked in a deep voice that made her shiver with fear.
“I still love him,” she cried out as tears fell across her face.
“And he doesn’t! Come on just…” he ended his sentence with a kiss on her now bare shoulders.
“No, you know I had to go,” she struggled again to keep his hands from ripping off her shirt “but you also know I love him more than anything.” She continued to mention Shane, thinking maybe Matt wouldn’t go on and would feel guilty. But it seemed that it only made him angrier.
“Fuck Shane, he’s got everything okay? He’d always been like that. He had a family when I hadn’t, he had money when sometimes I didn’t have one penny in my pocket, he had a job when I was jobless, he a lot of girlfriends because of his money and I had nothing because I didn’t have money. You know what Sam, you are one thing he is not going to have and you are going to be mine. I for once will have something Shane can’t have. You!”
Sam was astonished to hear all the hatred Matt held for Shane, she never knew that underneath Matt’s reactions and conversations laid an ugly person with an ugly soul.
“Matt please don’t, I’m begging you. Shane never had me before” she said thinking maybe if he found out she was still a virgin he would think again about it.
He paused for a second and lifted his head “What do you mean?” he asked curiously.
“I mean I didn’t do anything with Shane. Not with anybody. I’m a virgin Matt.” She said the last word pathetically. She was out of options here. She was going to do or say anything to get her out of this situation.
Matt looked at her then sat back. Sam felt a sudden relief thinking that he must have changed his mind. But what Matt said next made her scream in horror.
“Then let’s make your first time memorable.” He said as he opened his door and got out of the car.
Sam screamed and tried to do anything. She tried to find the keys so she could drive the car but he’d taken them with him. She tried to lock the doors but knew he’ll be able to get inside easily. There was only one thing to do and she did it before thinking of the consequences. Sam opened the door and ran outside, heading nowhere.
“SAM!!” she heard his angry voice from behind and tried to run faster. She thought she was far away from him when she hurt her ankle and fall to the ground. She hit her forehead and right away she felt blood cover her face. She looked at her feet and could see some stones, they were on her way and that was what made her fall. She quickly grabbed one and kept it in her hands. Twisting around every time she heard a small sound, Sam knew that if he appeared now she won’t be able to run.
“You know Sam, it would have been great if you wasn’t such a bitch.” He said from somewhere she couldn’t guess where.
She went still, not even making a slightest move, not even breathing so that he won’t find where she was. But then she felt a hand on her back, pulling her up from the floor. She screamed from the pain in her ankle and screamed of what might happen next.
“No Matt, please.” she tried to stand up but couldn’t and felt him pulled her into his arms.
“Save your breath Sam, you are going to need it when you scream out my name.” He said with a devilish smile that she could see because he was too close. She remembered the stone in her hands and with all the power she had she swung her hand towards his face. But he was faster than her, stepping back he avoided the stone and they both watched as it fell from her hands to the ground under his feet.
Matt picked it up and looked at her “You know Sam, you shouldn’t have tried this, you don’t know, I might like the idea and hit you too.”
Sam looked at the stone in his hand and back at him, she thought that if there was no way out of this she’d prefer that he’d hit her than being forced into having sex with him. So she said something that knew would provoke him.
“You know what Matt? It’s not Shane’s money that you lack; it’s the lack of being a man.” She said the words and turned around to run again.
Sam felt a heavy thing on the back of her head “Right bitch, if I can’t have you then no one can.”
These were the last words she heard. As she fell to the ground she felt something cut her right arm but she didn’t feel any pain. She just felt her head starting to spin and her eyes closed by themselves. She could see great darkness calling out for her, listening carefully she could hear a song her mother used to sing her, so she gave up to the darkness and what she thought her mother calling for her.
