Ethan parked the car in his garage. Ryan took the leftover food inside. There was only an hour until Ryan needed to be at work. Ethan offered to walk Ryan to the convenience store. “Women only need us five minutes a year; face it. We’re fucking redundant. Women can function fine without us and we go crazy if we don’t have women.”
“You don’t; you’re a fag,” Ryan said. “When are you going back to work?”
“In two weeks,” Ethan said. “The time off was nice.”
“I couldn’t stand to be in the house with all those women.” Ryan put his hand in Ethan’s. “Don’t be thinking I’m your boyfriend. I don’t go that way.”
“I would never ask you. I begged Juan not to marry me to anyone. Fuck, I was happy dreaming about Leslie.”
“I found a gypsy with the spell.” Ethan and Ryan had a little over mile walk before they left the residential district. There was nothing but houses there. Not even a gas station could be seen on foot. “The ingredients were strange. I photocopied it and gave the original to Doris. We’ll have to collect them ourselves if we ever want to use it. I can’t see myself collecting lizards and bats body parts, and I definitely not raiding a graveyard. When I spoke at length about it, she wanted to charge me for it, but I easily charge her mind.”
“Do I want to know?” Ethan asked.
“I let her live. I shouldn’t have.” Ryan looked at Ethan in the light of the on coming cars. “You need to stay out of the road.”
“I didn’t remember it being such a long walk.”
“It seems long at night.”
“Don’t you have the urge to change standing alone most night?”
“At first, it was hard but now it’s nothing. Some nights, I have less than a dozen customers. I get a lot of reading done.”
“You never do stake outs alone. Have you ever been shot?”
“Twice. No big thing, it hurts like hell. Then, you get the bullet pulled out at the hospital wake up the next morning feeling much better and sign yourself out.”
“Shit, I won’t miss that part when I’m driving trucks.” Ethan jumped on the grass as a car passed too closely. “Why work at night? Fifty cents more an hour isn’t compensation for being fucking shot at.”
“No one else will do it and it gives me time to read. Ethan, will you be happy on the highway?”
“I love learning. I can buy books on CD and listen to them. I can read scholarlyk atk at truck stops.”
“And getting your PhD.”
“It’ll happen. I think someone should reintroduce prayer to our community since Jake doesn’t want to do it.”
“Ethan, are you going to do it?”
“I just might.” Ethan had spent years learning the importance of culture when he took courses in sociology. He prayed for direction as Ryan and him walked the rest of the way.
“Jake is our rabbi.”
“I’ll talk to him about leading our community in prayer.” Ethan brought a chocolate bar and an iced tea before starting the long trek house. “Ryan, have a good night.”
“Thanks for walking me the fuck over. After I gather the ingredients, we’ll ask Leslie if she wants to use the spell.”
“We can’t. I’ve never seen a werewolf Leslie’s height. Have you? I have my doubts that only short people were cursed.”
“Maybe we’re attracted to short people.”
“Nonsense. Leslie was surprised at how tall my mother is and I was attracted to Leslie and she is tall.” Ethan ate his candy bar.
“We must have interbreed with tall people so the only answer is that tall people don’t live long enough to have offspring. Maybe a werewolf can only change if smaller than a certain size and if one is bigger it dies. We have to give Leslie this information if we offer it to her.” Ryan went behind his register.
“You haven’t found the ingredients, yet.”
“After I do.” Ryan cracked his knuckles rather loudly before he took out a Laurel Hamilton novel to read.
