21 the Magii speak
Jacs and Lacey eyed one another in both distrust and confusion. The anger was no longer evident. Where had they been taken? By WHOM? Clearly not by the opposing force.
Lacey spoke first. “Truce, Jacs? We are BOTH here against our wills.”
Jacs nodded agreement. “Truce, Lacey. Wherever HERE is anyway.”
A light brighter than the one they stood under approached in the dim hall and they were beckoned to follow. Suspicious, they did so; neither in a mood to be biddable or soft; but they WOULD listen. The training of both had taught them that much; to learn, to gain advantage, they had to listen, carefully.
The figure with the light joined several others sat in a semi circle. The women were bidden by a move of the hand to sit.
“Ladies. Welcome. First, our apologies for your removal from the field of battle. We needed envoys from both sides to LISTEN, before it is too late.”
“And YOU are?” Jacs was hostile. Lacey patted an arm, gentling.
“Our HOSTS will let us know as they will Jacs. Before WHAT is too late is the question I believe?”
Grim smiles arose. “Both questions are relevant ladies. WE are the Magii, beholden to no Lord that resides on Twisted World. We alone know what this world is, and possibly will become. We are the only people here by choice, the ‘voice’ as it were of those who REALLY control this place.”
Another spoke. “And the second question, Lacey, is not so complicated. This fight must cease before both forces are denuded to the point where there is no opposition to Overlord.”
Both Lacey and Jacs exploded with laughter. “THIS you would have us believe? That we are NOT fighting the forces of Overlord?”
“This is what you MUST believe ladies. This is TRUTH. Both of your forces have been compromised by Overlord’s emissaries.”
Jacs stiffened. “These emissaries are?”
“Lacey will believe easily - Klem of the Board has manipulated both the Isles AND Lucard’s forces. So far, he has managed to denude both forces by half their individual strengths. Jacs, you will have trouble believing, but you must. Glem is the traitor in your midst.”
She was about to protest, until the memory of Glem briefing Hadad arose. It was he, and he alone, who had suggested they take the fight to the coast. A hard thing to believe indeed, but she saw the truth.
“Overlord plays two opposing forces against each other! He does not even need to fight!”
“Correct Jacs. And you must return to tell Hadad and Vlad before it is too late. Lucard himself will come eventually, when the thing is near conclusion; for now, these two alone must know and UNITE.”
Lacey had kept her tongue so far. “And if we do, miraculously, unite, what then? What part do YOU play in this game of deceit?”
The figures smiled as one. “We merely leave the path to Overlord open for you to confront him. He has far fewer men than he would have you believe. Even half of your joint forces should suffice to bring him down.”
“And we approach our Lords together?”
“You do indeed, Jacs, how else can you make either believe!”
“And know this, Jacs, Lacey; both your paths come to the great crossroads of destiny. Call upon us, THINK it, and we will guide.”
They stood in awe, believing, no longer adversaries. “You KNOW our futures? Tell us!” Lacey wanted to KNOW.
“Aha, dear Lacey, we KNOW much, we know NOT for certain. Events happen randomly in the great scheme of things. KNOW that if you both choose the correct path, you will be content. The key word is CHOOSE.”
