Chapter 21
**For anyone who has been following my story, I'm sooo sorry for how long I took to update! At first i had the worse case of writer's block.. and then I just got preoccupied with other things.. but that’s all done now, so I can finally keep this story moving along :)
*Daylith’s View*
About fifteen minutes later, Timmy pulled away from me and sat at the edge of the bed.
“Going somewhere?"
“I’m just gonna take a shower, and I’m a little hungry too.”
I was also hungry so I told him we could probably find something downstairs to eat when he’s done.
When he stood up, I could tell he was in pain because of how slow he moved.
“You okay?” I asked.
“Yea.” He replied.
He tried to act casual and walk normally, as if he didn't feel anything, but I already knew. I let out a short chuckle and joked, “I’d say I was sorry for being so big, but I’m not.”
He laughed and shook his head before disappearing into the bathroom. I was a little surprised that he didn't come back with some kind of retort.
Left alone in the room, I folded my arms behind my head and started to think about what we just did. It felt so unreal, especially now that Timmy wasn’t next to me anymore, but it was. It was very real.
I smiled and thought to myself, ‘Man I love suspension, this is gonna be one damn good week.’
*Timmy’s View*
Once I was in the bathroom I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. There was something about Daylith’s personality that made me want to laugh. I mean, does he say things like that because he’s actually that confident, or is he just stupid? I guess he's a little bit of both.
I went over to the shower and turned the knob. I gave the water a second to warm up before stepping in.
*Daylith’s View*
I was just about to join Timmy in the shower when I realized I needed one too, until I thought about what could happen if me and Timmy went downstairs later.
‘What if my dad’s in the living room or something?’
I didn’t want Timmy to witness another confrontation between my dad and I, so I decided to take this chance to go down alone and grab some food to bring up to my room instead.
I put on a pair of pants and went downstairs to find that my dad wasn’t there.
I let out a sigh of relief and opened the fridge door to find that I had nothing to be relieved about.
“Oh come on!” I said aloud in frustration. “There’s nothing in the god damn fridge!”
I started opening cabinets, hoping that there’d be something edible somewhere, but I found nothing.
“Fuck.” I mumbled.
With no food in the house I was only left with two options. Either I ask my dad to get something, or Timmy and I starve.
I stood there for a minute thinking, until my empty stomach convinced me to just ask my dad.
I went over to his door and knocked on it lightly before opening it and going down the basement stairs. I found him sitting in his reclining chair watching television on his small twelve inch TV.
“Hey dad.” I said to get his attention.
“What?” He said without turning to look at me.
“Can you give me some money to order food?”
He waited a moment before answering. “My wallet's on the nightstand.” He stated flatly.
I walked over to his bed and reached for his wallet. The atmosphere felt so thick between us, but there was nothing I could do about it. I'm not going to be the one to cave in and apologize just to have him talk to me, especially when he's the one who’s wrong.
I pulled a twenty and a ten out of his wallet and turned to leave, but once I reached the steps I heard my dad say, “I’m sorry about what I said earlier. It was wrong of me to take my frustrations out on you and Timmy. I’m just… I’m dealing with a lot right now, and I know that you are too, so… I’m sorry.”
“I know.” Was all I said before moving to go upstairs. However, my dad continued talking and I stopped again
to listen.
“But don’t think that means he can stay forever, he has to go back sometime. But we’ll save that for another day, alright?”
I didn’t give my father’s last comment much attention, and I left his room without saying anything.
It was good enough to hear that he was calming down. It restored some hope that Timmy will be around longer. Even if not forever.
*Timmy’s View*
When I got out of the shower I dried off and got dressed. When I came out I didn’t see Daylith anywhere, and I figured he went downstairs. I was just about to go check, when he came back in.
“I just went down to get some food, but there's nothing. We'll have to order takeout. So what're you in the mood for, pizza or Chinese?"
“Uhh, pizza sounds good.”
He went over to the phone while asking, “Anything on it?”
“Nah, plain is fine.”
I sat down on the bed and waited for Daylith to finish ordering.
When he hung up the phone he turned to look at me, "They said it should take about twenty minutes to get here."
My stomach growled as if it was able to hear the news. "Great." I said sarcastically. That was one of the downfalls of living so far from town.
“So now what?” I asked, wondering what to do for twenty minutes.
“Now,” he said while standing up, “I take a shower. Be out in a minute.”
While Daylith was in the shower, I occupied myself with the TV. It only took a couple of minutes until he finished and sat down with me.
Fortunately, time flew by pretty fast, and before we knew it, the doorbell was ringing downstairs.
I went with Daylith to pay the delivery man. As Daylith stood in the open doorway waiting for his change, I noticed the sun going down outside.
“Hey, you wanna eat outside?” I asked.
Daylith glanced at the sky and then nodded his head.
“Yea, just let me bring down a few slices to my dad first.”
I went out ahead of him and sat on the steps. I was going to wait for him to get back, but I was too hungry, and started without him.
When he came back, we ate quietly for awhile. I followed his gaze into the fields in front of us. I bet he isn’t used to the country scenery yet.
“Hey.” Daylith said.
When I looked into his eyes he continued, “Let’s go for a walk before it gets too dark.”
He grabbed my arm to pull me up and I dropped what was left of my pizza's crust on the ground. I followed him passed the house and garage, until we were far into the backyard. Being that he didn't farm his land, his yard wasn't as big as mine. However, his yard did span for a few miles until it reached a forest, which gated his land and marked the end of his property.
As I followed him, I glanced over my shoulder to see his house getting smaller with each step. Only the tip of the sun was visible over the horizon, making his house stand as a silhouette. If it weren't for a few lights on in the house, the darkness would have blended it right into the scenery. It made for a nice sight, and I wished Daylith would stop a minute to look.
When I looked back at Daylith, I noticed how slow I was moving, so I jogged to catch up.
Just then, Daylith stopped and laid down in the grass. I followed suit and sat down next to him.
Daylith hadn't said a word so I studied his face to see if anything was bothering him. I noticed his gaze was focused on the sky.
"You still like the country, right?"
He nodded his head. "Yea, it's nice."
I smiled. "I remember when you first came here. You seemed so different, I actually didn't think you'd fit in right away as well as you did."
He looked up at me. "Heh," he laughed, "Were you attracted to me even then?"
I forced myself not to shy away from that question, so I blatantly answered, "Yea. I actually did."
He continued looking at me for a second and then stopped to look at the sky again.
I tightened my shoelaces to fight off the awkward feeling I got from the silence.
"Wanna hear something weird?"
"Yea, why not." I said.
"When we first met, I kinda knew we'd get into some kind of relationship."
"How?" I asked confused.
"I don't know. I guess by the faces you made when I did things. It kinda gave away that you had feelings for me."
I felt my cheeks heat up a bit. "I was that obvious, huh?" I asked a little embarrassed.
He laughed. "No, I wouldn't say obvious. You were pretty hard to figure out actually. In the beginning I even tried teasing you a bit to find out if you were gay."
As soon as he said that I remembered all of the times in his house when he was teasing me with gay jokes. 'Those were tests!?' I thought to myself.
"You fucking jerk-off!!" I yelled while punching him in the arm, "I remember that!"
He started laughing hysterically, "Oh man! You should've seen you’re face when I said stupid things! It was so funny!"
"Shut up you ass." I said, getting a little mad.
His laughter started to die down, until only a few chuckles escaped him.
"Don’t be embarrassed. I actually feel kinda stupid for even doing that. So we're even."
I let out a sigh and shrugged it off.
"Let's go back inside now. It's getting a little cold." I said while standing up.
"Yea. I just wanted a minute away from the house." He said as he reached out his hand for help. I pulled him up, and we both started walking back to the house.
It only took a few minutes until we got back, but by then we were both tired.
We went to bed and attempted to watch some TV, however, it only took a short while before we both fell asleep.
The next morning, I woke up before Daylith and went downstairs for something to drink.
Daylith's dad was sitting on the couch reading a newspaper, and it felt a little awkward. I wasn't sure if I should say something, or just pretend he wasn't there.
I ended trying to go by without getting his attention, but just when I was about to enter the kitchen he put his paper down.
"Morning Tim."
"Good Morning." I said trying to mask my disappointment that he noticed me.
He got off of the couch and walked over to where I was standing.
"I'm glad I caught you alone. I'm sure Daylith's vented to you about some of things I said about you yesterday…"
He paused a minute and I took that chance to say, "No, I… actually I overheard. I was over by the steps."
He looked away from me and sucked in a breath. "Really. Well, um.. I'm really sorry. I know you’re not a bad kid, and I was upset, so don't take anything I said personally. I was wrong to take it out on you guys. Unfortunately, right now my emotions aren't in check as much as Daylith's after the passing of my ex-wife."
I stood and listened quietly to the rest of what he had to say.
"However, I think I should try having this conversation with you, because I've been learning things about Daylith lately. Like how he tends to be brash, and won't listen to any reason but his own, so hopefully you're different. Now if we look at everything realistically, you can't be staying here forever, you know that right?"
I was a little nervous being confronted about this by his dad alone, yet I nodded in agreement.
He readjusted his glasses on his nose before continuing, "Now, Daylith mentioned to me that you were having problems at home. So if you want I can help you, and you can stay here for as long as you need. I just want to make sure we can work towards the day when you can comfortably leave, rather then just hanging around doing nothing. You understand?"
It sucked hearing his dad say these things to me. I couldn't shake the feeling of anxiety brought on by the thought of going back to my Uncle.
"So what'ya think? Sound good?" He asked.
"Uh… yea, sounds good." I replied. He placed his hand on my shoulder and smiled. I forced a smile in return, despite the nauseous feeling rising in my stomach.
He went back to the couch, and I drank some water before going back upstairs. Daylith was still asleep, and I attempted to go back to sleep since it was only 9AM. However, that was a hopeless attempt.
It wasn't until two hours later that Daylith woke up. I managed to go in and out of sleep during that time, but I still felt exhausted when I got up.
*Daylith's View*
I woke up to find Timmy laying next to me wide awake. I told him he could've watched TV or something, and that I can sleep through pretty much anything. However, he said he hadn't been awake for very long anyway.
The rest of the day went by like usual, aside from the fact that my dad came out of hiding, and we weren't at school because of suspension. Unfortunately, the usual sense of boredom was still around. We ended up lounging around the TV without much to say, until my dad offered to drive us to the basketball court. I wondered if he had some ulterior motive of getting me back into playing on the team, but instead of making a big deal, I just took him up on his offer.
The basketball court he took us to wasn't what I expected. It wasn't anywhere near the school or town, and it wasn't necessarily in walking distance to our house either.
"What's with the random basketball court?" I asked while looking at it through the car window. Acres of bare field surrounded the road we were on, and only a short distance away was a small rectangular area of blacktop with one basketball hoop, seemingly placed there out of total randomness.
"Actually," my dad said, "People used to live on this land and their son played Basketball. When they left, their house was torn down, but it was decided to leave the court for public use. If you look out over there, you can still see a bit of the foundation from their house."
I noticed the small mound of rocks, but I still couldn't get over the feeling that we were in some kind of dead zone.
"So how long you think you'll wanna stay here?" Dad asked.
I looked over at Timmy who just shrugged his shoulders.
"Uh, about an hour and a half I guess."
"Alright. So I'll see you kids later, now get out." He said jokingly.
As soon as we shut the doors, my dad drove off, and we headed towards the small platform.
*Timmy's View*
Daylith began to dribble the ball once we reached the court, and I watched as the ball practically danced in his hand.
"Kinda feels like this is our very own court doesn't it?" He commented.
"Yea, a bit." I was also a little surprised at the isolation of this place. Out of all the years I've lived here, I didn't even know it existed.
"Toss the ball over here!" I shouted, with arms poised to catch the ball.
Once the ball was in my hand I dribbled it to get the feel for the game again, and then attempted to throw it into the hoop. It hit the rim and bounced off, bouncing on the ground once before Daylith got it.
We played against each other for a good half hour, when I called a time-out to get a drink from my water bottle.
Daylith continued making shots without me. As I lifted my bottle to my mouth, the sun got in my eyes, so I reflexively squinted to protect them. In that moment, through my narrow vision, I could have sworn that I saw something small and black sail through the sky over the hill in front of me, but when I lowered my water bottle and looked around, I saw nothing.
I shrugged it off, figuring it must've been a bird and ran back to play with Daylith.
Ten minutes into the game, the heat started to get to the both
of us, even without our shirts. I wiped some sweat from my eyes,
and went to block Daylith from making a shot, when I caught a
glimpse of something going through the sky again. I stopped to
look, and Daylith swerved around me and jumped to make a
basket.
I followed the object as it made its way down from
the sky.
"What're you looking at?" Daylith asked curiously.
Just then I saw someone’s form rising over the hill as he ran to catch a ball.
Daylith turned to look, "Looks like someone's playing football out there."
The ball hit the ground and bounced a few times, and the boy bent down to grab it once he caught up with it. He stood up for a minute, looking back at us, as we looked at him.
"Who is that?" Daylith asked, squinting his eyes to see better detail of the man's face.
I however, figured him out right away. I could see the dirty blonde color of his hair practically glowing in the sun. His figure was distinct, and I couldn't tell if it was my imagination or if I was really seeing the cold malevolent glare in his eyes. It was Marcus.
*Daylith’s View*
About fifteen minutes later, Timmy pulled away from me and sat at the edge of the bed.
“Going somewhere?"
“I’m just gonna take a shower, and I’m a little hungry too.”
