Once Upon A Time
Once upon a time, the school girls’ were young. Once upon a time, they still had attitude. Once upon a time was a long time ago, they are still waiting for happily ever after.
Second grader tom-boy Oshidori Yuki stood in the middle of the school yard, bat in hand, ready to take on the boy that was trying to flip up young Taiikuka Shai’s skirt. On a swing set somewhere Chenbaro Fuji sat reading, ignoring the young girls and their torment of the school yard.
“Back off, Nakago,” Yuki snarled at her older brother. “You know better than to pick on girls.”
“Now Yuki-chan,” that was Shimo, going up to his friend and placing a hand on Nakago’s small shoulder. Yuki nearly dropped the bat, adoring the way that fourth-grader moved and the way his light lavender eyes shined brightly in the afternoon sun. “You know that Nakago is just playing,” Shimo explained. “He is probably just trying to get Kaori’s attention, whom ignores all of us quite easily.”
The young school children turned and looked to Kaori and her best friend Danko, who were over in a corner of the playground playing with dolls. Kaori pointedly turned her back on her siblings when she saw them looking her way. She was at that point where spending time with boys was icky, and spending time with her siblings was even worse. Nakago was the worst possible, he was a boy and her brother.
“Well, she is smart to do so,” Yuki agreed quite readily. “You boys are trouble. Now leave poor Shai alone.”
“Why flirt with Shai when you are so much more beautiful,” Shimo insisted, stepping up to Yuki and taking her chin in his. When he watched her face fall from shock Shimo began to laugh, backing away from her. “You should have seen your face, it was priceless.”
“Sekisetsu Shimo, you are the worst!” Yuki screamed, pulling up her bat once more and chasing after the albino boy, who just laughed behind his shoulder at the girl who looked like a crazed maniac chasing him.
Shai sat up, wiping herself off. A hand was held out to her and she was surprised to see Nakago offering her a hand. “Sorry,” he apologized. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“I’m all right,” she insisted kindly. “But thank you. I’m going to go see my friend now.” Shai walked over to Fuji on the swing set and took over the seat next to her, twirling around and kick sand over at Fuji. Fuji, slightly annoyed and without lifting her eyes from the pages of the book, kicked sand back. Shai only laughed and swung around a few more times.
“Sometimes you act as childish as her,” Fuji pointed out, still engrossed in her book. She was referring to Yuki, Shai knew this.
“That’s because we are children, Fuu,” Shai laughed and continued to twirl herself on the swing.
Slight amused, Fuji closed her book and twirled as well, proving she was a much better twirler when it comes to the swings.
Kaori and Danko returned to their dolls, a moment when Danko still was as girly as her best friend. This is not a story, however, about what happened to Danko, so you will just have to be teased with the fact that she was once as girly as her best friend.
Yuki chased Shimo all of the way behind the school, swinging the bat wildly, until she lost him around a corner. She spun around the corner and suddenly felt the bat pulled from her hands. Afraid that she had been caught for a teacher she looked up innocently until she saw that it was Shimo, holding the bat happily. “Looking for someone?”
“Yes,” she said all snarly like only a child can do. “You!”
“Why?” he asked, raising an eyebrow happily.
“Because…” but, that was Yuki, as she had always been. “I… I forgot.”
“I remember,” Shimo told her sweetly.
“Then tell me.”
“Only if you close your eyes.”
Yuki, unquestioningly, closed her eyes to the world. She stood, waiting for Shimo to tell her why she had been chasing him, but… she was innocent and did not expect what came next. Suddenly something moist was upon her lips and she opened her eyes to see that Shimo had leaned forward and given her a small peck, but would not pull his lips away yet. Yuki pressed forward before pulling back and looking up at him shocked.
How she could forget her first kiss… I guess we can only brush that off as it being Yuki.
