Female of the Species

“You’ve heard about Kay then?” Jackson asked as we started to make our way along the mired of corridors that made up the complex, checking the rooms and locking them one by one.

“If you mean that she’s pregnant, yes.” I nodded as I set the alarm on yet another door, “She did say she was thinking about having a kid.”

“Any idea’s who the farther could be?” Diana asked, “You know her better than we do.”

“To say that anyone truly knows Kay would be a lie: she’s too good at keeping secrets.” I shrugged, “I’m sure this is something she’s put a lot of thought into…”

I stopped mid-sentence as my defensive aura kicked in; surrounding the three of us just a moment before a hail of gunfire filled the corridor. The bullets flattened against the almost invisible barrier, glowing red as they traded kinetic energy for heat.

“Nice trick.” Jackson tapped the barrier with his finger, generating a chime like sound, “I’ve heard of some post-humans having this ability, but I’ve never seen it happen in real life.”

“Kay says it’s probably a latent extension of my invulnerability.” I started to walk towards the gunfire, the others keeping pace, “She says the nuke they dropped on me in Australia probably activated it.”

“It didn’t save my brother.” Diana glared at me.

“Hey!” I stopped dead in my tracks, “Duke was like a brother to me: I never wanted to get him into any sort of trouble.”

“Am I interrupting?” One of the Brown clones stepped forward, holding a large rifle in his hand.

“Drop dead!” Holding his Particle Cannon with one outstretched hand, Jackson fired. The bolt of man-made lightning passed through the aura and hit the clone in the chest, knocking him back down the corridor.

The smoke rising from his chest and smell of burnt flesh told us he was dead.

“I hate it when people interrupt me when I’m trying to have a conversation.” Jackson shook his head.

“Remind me never to interrupt him.” I glanced at Diana as I reached for my radio, “We got hostiles two floors above the command centre. They’re packing heavy-calibre projectile weapons, but you can bet they’ve got something bigger and nastier in reserve.”

Confirmed: I’m reading at lest two high-level post-humans inside the complex.” Kay sounded like she’d recovered most of her composure; “One of them is defiantly a teleporter.

Charlotte?” Ren asked.

Can’t tell: I need to have been in close proximity with someone to know their physic signature, and I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Nathan’s better half.” Kay actually laughed.

You two can make dirty jokes about Nathan’s ex when we’ve gotten rid of the last intruders.” Sid sounded more than a little annoyed, “Right now we need to concentrate…” The radio went dead.

“Sid?” I held the radio close to me ear, “Sid? Ren? John?”

I’m picking up a massive disturbance from their location.” Kay reported, “Someone very powerful is letting lose with everything they have.

“Charlotte.” I hissed, “I’m on my way.” I turned to Diana and Jackson, “Clear out the rest of this floor and then…”

Diana stepped out of the protective aura and turned herself into a pillar of flame. She started to expand, filling the entire corridor with fire, vaporising the dead clone.

What the hell are you doing up there?” Kay asked over the radio, “The fire alarms are going crazy!

“Diana’s letting out a little pent-up aggression.” Jackson smiled.

Good god! Is she that intense in bed?” Kay asked.

“Only when I ask.” Jackson winked at me as Diana returned to normal.

“You and Diana?” I blinked, “How long?”

“About two years, on and off, but I’m not the type to kiss and tell.”

“It’s true: I can’t read people worth a damn.”

“Weren’t you going to check on the others?”

“Shit!” I took off down the corridor as fast as I could move.

Kay got there before me by way of knowing her way around the complex better than anyone. Seeing a powerful psychic fight is a terrifying thing to behold: rather than using their body to inflict physical pain, they attack you psychically, turning your own mind against you.

I’ve seen grown me, soldiers, bash their own heads against a wall until they passed out because a psychic told them to.

Most psychics are of limited power, requiring eye contact to assert any control. Very few are Kay’s level, capable of tearing your mind to pieces in the blink of an eye. Although she maybe physically very human, Kay’s mind is one of the most powerful weapons known to man, earning her the rank of 14 of the table of most powerful post-humans on the planet.

A pair of clones, one’s I’d never seen before, were lifted off the ground and slammed into each other with enough force to crush bones. Another’s head was twisted round so fast his neck snapped. Others were just lying on the floor, dead.

“Hello Nathan.” Kay smiled, “I’m up to No.23 of 101-ways to kill someone with your mind.”

At times like that it was easy to see how she earned her ‘Kali the Destroyer’ nom de plume.

“Where are the others?” I asked, trying not to throw up.

“Down there.” Kay pointed further down the corridor, “I’ll deal with the rest of these bastards!”

“O.K.” I nodded, looking for the others.

I found Sidney first: she was lying in the middle of the corridor, blood covering her body from the waist down.

“Sid?” I knelt down besides her, checking for a pulse.

“That ex-wife of your is a bitch.” She replied groggily, “Don’t know what you saw in her.”

“According to Kay, stability.” I smiled, relived that she was still alive.

“Can’t have been mental stability: she was grinning like a maniac when she did, well, what ever it is she’s done to me.”

“Can you move?”

“Nathan, I can barely speak. I can’t feel my legs…”

“Kay’s on her way: she’ll sort you out.” I went to continue on.

“Wait!” Sid grabbed my arm, “Be careful: Charlotte’s changed.”

“Don’t worry about me.” I stood up, charging my fists, “She’s not the only one.”

“Hi kiddo.” John Loch was laying on the floor, the remains f his laser pistols clenched in each hands, “Just had a run-in with my daughter in law.” He coughed up blood, “She did a real number on me.”

“Don’t worry, Kay’s on her way.” I knelt down beside him.

“I know enough about getting hurt to know that there’s no getting better from this.”

“I’m sure that there’s something…”

“Nathan, please, let me die with some dignity. The only thing I regret is never being there for you before now. I need, I need to know that you could forgive me for that.”

“John, I…” I didn’t know what to say, “You have nothing to apologise for: you did what you did to do, Dad.”

“You’ve no idea how long I’ve waited to hear you say that…” John closed his eyes and quietly died in my arms.

“Poor Nathan; you always did wonder what your parents where like, and now you know.” Charlotte appeared along the corridor, “A police woman who couldn’t keep her mind on the job, and a crime lord whose idea of a fun Saturday night was to brake the legs of anyone he caught dealing drugs on his ‘patch’. You could have done so much better.”

“They where real people.” I stood slowly, lying John down as gently as I could, “Something I am beginning to see we don’t understand.”

“I do what I must to keep the world safe. A now order is coming Nathan, and you can be either at its side, or in its way.”

“Not interested.”

“Somehow I knew you’d say that…” Charlotte looked almost sad, but it lasted for a moment, “You know I have to kill you.”

COMME L’ENFER VOUS!” Ren appeared out of nowhere, leaping at Charlotte with all her strength.

CHIENNE!” Charlotte backhanded her without a glance. Ren hit the wall with enough force to crumple the brickwork and collapse onto the floor, out cold.

“Is this the little prostituée you left me for?” Charlotte asked me.

“Why don’t you try that on someone your own size!” Kay stood in the corridor, her long hair billowing out behind her.

“The legendary Kali the Destroyer.” Charlotte smiled evilly, “I’ve waited a long time to do this…”

The air filled with raw power, the backwash sending me skidding back along the corridor. Charlotte let rip with everything she had, unleashing powers capable of decimating an entire army.

But Kay gave back as good as she got: countering Charlottes attack with one of her own, using her powers to create a barrier that kept her safe.

Between the two of them, Kay and Charlotte have had more of an impact on my life than anyone else I’ve ever met. Seeing them open up on each other like that was a terrifying sight that would influence my nightmares for years to come.

The entire mountain started to shake as the fight continued, unparalleled amounts of energy being unleashed by both women. Kay’s eyes had turned completely blue as physic energy flowed through her body. Charlotte was lost in a halo of glowing power as she threw everything she had into the fight.

The ceiling looked like it was going to collapse on top of us, but neither of them let up for a second as the lights started to explode, only the raw power they where wheedling illuminating the scene.

“I see that your reputation is well deserved.” Charlotte said when they finally let up, leaving the corridor a twisted ruin, half caved in.

“You don’t get named after the Goddess of destruction without good reason.” Kay grinned, “I must admit, I’ve never met someone who could stand up to me like that. I’m almost impressed.”

“Can’t say I feel the same.” Charlotte looked at me, “You’ve hurt me, and now I’m going to hurt you.” She grabbed Ren’s limp body and disappeared in a flash.
