Chapter 20
Mary shifted her few bags of groceries. Though Rue told her not to worry about cooking, after years of cooking for friends and family, it was hard to just sit by and be a bystander during such a holiday.
She’d made her rounds earlier that day. Like a seasoned veteran, she battled through the throngs of shoppers in the grocery store to pick out a few essential items that every cook needed for the occasion. Her bags jangled and squeaked from the shifting of trays and vegetables.
Though, it was different not being the head chef in the kitchen, she still had to admit she was looking forward to relaxing a bit. Gifts had been purchased the month before. Mary hadn’t shopped for a young woman since her days as such. For Rue, she’d found a beautiful dress, so wonderfully cut that in her mind’s eye, she knew that things would have to move forward between her and Joe Vic. The dress was designed to get attention, designed to get results.
Steps away from the door, Mary was pulled from her thoughts. She stood listening to the sounds of something heavy banging against the wall, followed by dishes breaking. She dropped her bags and walked forward quietly. Approaching the door full of trepidation, she stopped when suddenly one of the clamoring sounds hit just opposite of her on the other side of the wall.
She gasped suddenly, and a hand flew up to her mouth to stifle any sound. What was going on she wondered? Even closer to the door, now, she could hear almost perfectly.
A man’s voice, not Joe Vic’s, laughed cruelly. “Hold her, you idiots.”
Mary heard the sound of more scuffling and muffled shouts and screams. “Come on, you two. Jesus! Do I have to do everything myself?” The same male voice asked. She gasped again as metal connected against flesh.
A few heavy moments of silence passed, she needed to get closer, but the fear of what she’d find there on the other side of the door kept her from moving forward. Mary heard the sudden pained inhale of breath, and the even slower exhalation. There was no doubt about what was happening on the other side of that door.
When she could no longer listen to the broken gasps and smothered wet screams, Mary backed away, finally unfrozen, and gathered her bags. Silently cursing how noise plastic tended to be.
All her bags were fully in hand when she heard, “All done. You two can have a chance.” The men laughed. “Don’t say I never gave you anything. This is by far the best piece of ass in the whole country.”
She covered her mouth again, as tears began to leak from her eyes. Mary walked backwards until she reached the front entrance and ran to her car. She be damned if she couldn’t help that poor girl, she’d call someone that could.
