Fire in the sky
Ren broke away from the kiss and rested her head on my shoulder, not saying anything.
Even after all we’ve been through together, I still can’t read her: even at time like this, when she lets most of her defences down, she is still a complete mystery to me. I wish I could understand her better, even if it was just a way to understand how I feel about her myself.
“Key’s pregnant.” Ren said after what felt like an eon, “She says it’s a test-tube baby, but she won’t say who the father is.”
“She did say she had something like that planed, and refusing the name the father in her style.” I said after the news had sunk in, “Kay is a very complex individual, but she never does anything without a good reason.”
“What about you? Are you complex?”
“I have been accused of being complex in the past, but compared to someone like Kay, I am an open book.”
“One I intend to read fully.” Ren looked at me, “I’m not very experienced with relationship: the life I have chose leaves little time for romance. I’m sure that I love you, but I don’t want to take things too fast.”
“I’m not the most experienced man in the world; I can count the women I’ve been involved with without running out of fingers on one hand.” I smiled slightly, “I’m probably what you’d call ‘damaged goods’ after everything that’s happened.”
“Nathan, no one could go through everything you’ve been through and not been effected in some way. In fact, I’d be worried if you weren’t a little messed up.”
“I’m going to take that as a compliment.” I put an arm around Ren’s waist as we started to walk to the entrance to the base, “Sophie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship…”

The alarm woke me just as I was drifting off to sleep in a chair, having spent several hours watching the various news channels Kay had hacked her way into to try and catch up on world events. I looked at Ren, who was curled up on the sofa across from me; she opened one eye sleepily and then jumped to her feet, suddenly awake.
“Are we under attack?” She asked, pulling her shoes on.
“I don’t know.” I ran through the doorway, heading for the control room, know that’s where I’d find Kay and the others.

“SkyBolts A-13 through B-9 are locking on!” Simon was sitting at one computer station, a lead running into a USB port in his arm, “I’m trying to redirect them, but they keep changing the encryption too fast for me to keep up.”
“Damn it!” Kay looked truly worried, “Keep on it!”
“What’s going on?” Jackson asked as he arrived, along with Diana McKenzie. I could tell by the way that they were pulling their robes on that they’d been in bed when the alarm sounded.
“Someone’s trying to redirect the SkyBolt orbital laser satellites onto us.” Simon sounded distant, “They’ve found a way to bypass the security measures that keep them from being pointed at the planet.”
“How much damage can they do?” John asked, “Are we safe down here?”
“I honestly don’t know.” Sweat was running of Kay’s brow, “This place was build to survive a near-direct hit by a nuclear bomb, but there are enough satellites aimed at us to turn the entire mountain into molten rock and seal us in.”
“You have defences?” Sidney asked as she appeared, dressed in only a nightgown and a pair of fluffy pink slippers.
“Short range stuff for dealing with conventional weapons and forces: nothing with the range or power we need.” Kay shook her head, “The government in Lhasa is mainly Buddhist, and don’t like the fact that I have any weapons here at all. Considering all I’ve done for them…”
“Can you please concentrate on the job at hand?” Ren asked, “We can discus the pros and cons of pacifistic government polices later, if we live.”
“I can’t crack the code walls protecting the satellites.” Simon blinked, “But they aren’t protecting the satellites that don’t have a direct line-of-sight on us…”
“So?” I asked, feeling slightly behind the news.
“So I can turn them on the ones they are controlling!” The main screen changed to show the positions of the satellites in orbit.
The SkyBolt Orbital Defence System had been talked about for decades, but it wasn’t until Dr Lang had gotten interested that anything was done. The system was made up of hundreds of solar-powered lasers in geostationary orbit, intended to deal with any comit or astaroid that looked like it might colide with the Earth or Luna.
Safegaurs in the software suposably made it imposibal to turn the satellites round and fire on the planet they were there to protect, but the conspiracy had evidently found a way to bypass the system.
A loud thud shook the room, a thin layer of dust falling from the ceiling as the first laser fired, striking the mountain with a intense beam of light, hotter than the surface of the sun.
“Simon, any time you feel like doing something…” Kay commented through clenched teeth.
“I’m almost in.” Simon’s eyes had turned almost completely black as he concentrated intently on cracking the code-walls, “I’m in!”
The main display was still showing the orbiting weapons satellites, with the ones aimed at us marked in red. Two were glowing, indicating that they were the ones firing on us. One of the satellites highlighted in blue started to glow, followed closely by a second and third.
On of the satellites attacking us winked out as it was destroyed.
The situation soon dissolved into a simple war of attrition: Simon kept up the fire on the satellites he controlled, while those operated by the Conspiracy started to fight back, while still firing on us.
“Maybe we should get down to the lower levels.” Kay suggested, “We can still get out by way of the…”
The lights died, plunging the room into near complete darkness, lit by only the glow from the computer screen as Simon played the world’s largest video game with real weapons. Less than a second passed before the red emergency lights flicked on, giving the room an eyrie look.
I noticed that Jackson had taken Diana’s hand, but ignored it.
“Someone’s inside the base.” Kay announced, “I can feel them.”
“Anyone you know?” I asked, my hands starting to glow as I unconsciously began charging them for a fight.
“They seem familiar, but I can’t place them.” Kay staggered, “I feel dizzy…”
“GAS!” Ren shouted, pointing at the thin haze pouring through the ventilation system.
“Are there any masks?” I looked at Kay, who pointed at a shelf on the wall. Grabbing an armful of gasmasks, I started to distribute them, making sure everyone was ok before I turned back to Kay.
“Can’t pinpoint where they are.” She sounded groggy, “More than one of them, different areas.”
“May I recommend that we don’t just sit here with our thumbs up our backsides waiting for them?” John sounded muffled behind his mask, “Kay luv, you got anything we can use against these clone toerags?”
“Possibly.” Kay made her way over two a locked cupboard, still a little shaky on her feet due to the affects of the drug. She unlocked the doors and opened them to reveal a selection of weapons.
“Now that’s what I’m talking about!” Jackson grabbed a man portable particle-cannon, “Time for some major payback!”
“I couldn’t have put it better myself.” John grabbed a pair of high-powered laser pistols, “So, what’s the plan?”
Everyone turned to look at me.
“What?” I blinked, “I’m no leader: I just hit stuff till it stops working…”
“You never change…” Sidney rolled her eyes, “Well, as the nearest thing we have to an officer, may I sagest that we split up into three team: Nathan, you and Jackson and Diana take the levels above us. Ren, John and I will take everything below. Kay and Artemus; stay here with Simon and keep him safe while he tries to take out the remaining satellites. I’m guessing that was only a distraction while they snuck in somehow.”
“There is defiantly a teleporter among them.” Kay was sitting back down in her chair, the colure returning to her face, “But the gas has me so mixed up I can’t tell who it was.”
“Teleportation is a rare talent, and very few of those who have it could teleport inside of a mountain.” Ren looked at me, “And as far as we know, only one of those works for the conspiracy.”
“I know.” I nodded grimly, “Charlotte.”
