Tahn's Tales
One Last Call
One Last Call
He wakes up with a groan of pain.
“What happened?”
All around are shards of glass and twisted metal, scarred trees with gouges missing from their bark, and on the ground beside him, a slowly growing pool of blood. The crickets are chirping the same as they always had before; nothing was wrong to them on this warm summer night. But the rod of metal impaling him tells a different story.
It’s a peaceful night to die, he thinks. There are no noises of humanity, no cars, no music, and he finds himself wanting, one last time, to hear the voice of the one he loves.
The cell phone’s light is dim with a crack through the screen, but it has enough power left for one last call. He dials the number he’s known by heart for years, ignoring the bloody fingerprints he leaves on the screen, and waits, hoping that they are still awake.
“Hello?”
“Hello love.”
“Hi!” He can hear the smile in their voice, and even in pain, it brings a smile to him as well. “Late night at the office?”
“Something like that. I just wanted to call and tell you how much I love you. I’ve loved you from the first moment I saw you. Do you remember dancing under the stars on the night we met? It’s a beautiful starry night, and they reminded me of you.”
"Yes, I remember. You sound a little strange, is everything alright?"
"I'm fine love, I'm fine. What was the song that was playing?"
“'I'll Love You Forever' It was chilly and you gave me your jacket. I kept it because it smelled like you, and I was worried that you would ask for it back every time I saw you. I learned later that being in your arms was even better. When are you coming home baby?”
The low battery signal beeped.
“Babe? Is your phone dying again?”
“Mmhmm. Just wanted to hear your voice before I lost you. I will you know?”
"Will what?"
"Love you forever."
He begins to softly hum the tune as his phone falls from his cold numb fingers. He can hear them on the other end of the line asking what happened when the phone, and his world turn black.
