Lisa: I think I have about 33k written so I'll update when I can drag myself into editing mode. The main problem I have is cutting it into chapters. I hate that crap.
"You knew this was going to happen, didn't you? How long has this damn meeting been planned and why do none of the others have to play with a gun to their head?"
"Vasi, calm down. They're not deaf."
Stood in the narrow kitchen - even with it just being the two of them - they were cramped, pressed up against each other when Vasiliki tried to get a glass down from shelf just a little too high.
"Move. I'll get it-"
"I am not a fucking child! I can manage." The glass was nudged with fingertips but his reaction wasn't good enough and it fell, shattering onto the counter.
"Dave, I hope you're looking after Vasi and not smashing any of my glasses while you're in my kitchen!" E's yell was loud but his voice full of humor. That was all Vasiliki needed to know that he'd been drinking a fair amount through the afternoon. Time was always a hazy subject.
"Are you hurt? Step back carefully and I'll clear it up." Dave was set in father mode, sweeping the danger away and grabbing a new glass.
"I'm not hurt. I'm pissed off that you allowed him to do that. He's drunk and he just had a gun in his hands. He could have killed himself, anyone."
"You mean he could have killed you." Dave looked at Vasiliki for a long moment before shrugging. "You know I have no power over him. He invited me over and I didn't decline. When I walked through the door you were sleeping on the sofa. I have no idea what happened before that but you looked quite content and he said you should be allowed to sleep. Everyone was kept quiet and some were even slinking past you in case they got blamed for waking you. And before you ask, I don't know what happened to make him feel the need to pull this shit again. But it's been awhile, right?"
"Right.."
"Yeah. So, you could just see it as him reminding them all, old and new. Sugar is going to get a good bollocking in private for speaking up about you but he means enough to E to not get it handed to him in public."
"Oh wow. How lucky for him, huh?"
"He probably doesn't see himself as very lucky right now, Vasi."
"I hate him."
"Sugar?"
"All of them. Look at them in there, no doubt spilling stuff everywhere for me to clean up in the morning. Why can't they meet somewhere else?"
"Because their boss - your boss - feels safe here." Dave put an arm around Vasiliki, trying to be comforting in a friendly, fatherly way but it was rejected. Vasiliki was still on edge about what had happened in the living room and felt the need to show everyone he wasn't a toddler.
"He's not your boss then? You don't see your relationship like those out there do so what is your relationship with E?"
Dave sighed hard at the question, turning away from the door and to face Vasiliki. The kid always asked the same damn question at least once a week and he was beginning to repeat himself even down to how he worded things.
"I am not working for him. I do not get paid for what I do. I'm simply here for your benefit. For your comfort."
"So I'm your boss now?" Vasiliki didn't like that thought at all.
"No."
"So you're my babysitter. Nice. Is that all you think of me? That I'm some moron who can't look after himself?" Vasiliki punched Dave in the top of his arm but it wasn't hostile.
"I think that, given different circumstances, you would be able to stand on your own. The life you have chosen or, should I say, the life that he chose for you... It is not safe to let you stand alone. You need company. You need assistance. You don't need it constantly even though E thinks so but you need it often enough. You need to know it's there for you."
"I know what to do if something shitty happens, thank you very much."
"And what is that then?" Dave knew he was walking on thin ice with the question. Vasiliki was tired and in need of another hit. To top it all he'd just had to watch E play with a gun to his head but he figured Vasi should be used to the tests now.
"I do as I'm told by E. If he gives me instructions, I follow them to the letter and then, unless otherwise stated, I come to you."
"And if you don't know where I am? What if you don't know whether the building is safe or not?"
"I call you."
"And if you think the line might not be safe."
"I go to Harry." Vasiliki shuddered at the thought of walking through that horrible school in search of Harry but he'd done it before and would do it again in a heartbeat if it meant he could keep everyone safe and from killing each other.
"And what... If you cannot find him?"
"You're really pushing the limit of how much shit can really hit the fan in one go, Dave. It's only ever gotten to the point where I need to go to Harry once in all this time."
"Things are changing." Dave wrapped an arm around Vasiliki again, this time refusing to back away, lowering his voice and speaking down to the floor. "You need to tell me so I know you're aware of what you do. This isn't just for your safety. It's for mine, E's, Harry. I know you don't want anything happening to any of us but you are seen as the weakest link."
"Thanks for that, fuck face!" Vasiliki pushed him away again, struggling and squirming against him until E turned up in the doorway with a scowl set firmly in place.
"Problem?"
"No... No problem. We were talking about escape routes."
"And you know them, yes? Repeat them."
"If I can't find Harry and am unable to gain contact with Dave, I go to the centre of town. I collect my present. I open it in private. I load it and hide it. I walk the route you hammered into my skull repeatedly until you, Harry or Dave comes to get me."
"And what do you not do?"
"I do not come back here. I do not look at the building as I pass it. I keep my head low, hands out of my pockets." Vasiliki cringed at what was coming.
"And if they find you before we do?"
He stumbled over his words, his tongue feeling foreign in his mouth, refusing to utter more than a rambling mess of syllables.
"Vasi."
"If I am in the open and am not outnumbered, I scream. If they have a weapon and appear hostile, I shoot first."
"And..."
"And if they are many, I don't give them the satisfaction of being able to say they killed me."
"My good boy." E kissed the top of Vasiliki's head, cradling him softly. "Make sure you have the balls to do it.... Take him to your place, Dave. He looks like he needs some tender loving care." E turned and went back to the sofa, looking like he'd been in the middle of something with the tall Sugar.
"And you are unwilling to give me what you think I need?" Vasiliki called after his lover, his keeper, even as Dave grabbed him by the arm and they headed for the door to the communal hallway.
"Work, baby. I have work. I'll pick you up in the morning."
It was two steps to Dave's apartment and Vasiliki couldn't help but laugh at the term. He needed picking up? He wasn't trusted to walk two steps to his own door. It was indeed laughable and many would have been insulted but Vasiliki, no matter how much he hated it, found comfort in the idea. It made him feel precious. Like a little trinket you simply couldn't live without. E's good luck charm. E's free ass.
"In you go. Make yourself at home, Vasi..." Dave toed off his shoes and smiled politely.
"We do this so much and yet you act like you are one of those guys that takes people to their hotel rooms. You want a tip or something? I don't have cash." It was a well known fact that Vasiliki never had money on him if he could help it. It made him feel vulnerable to pick pockets and the like. You never knew who was walking right beside you, brushing past and looking like they're in a hurry. Yeah, a hurry to run off with your wallet.
"I'm sorry. I was in professional mode with E's friends. They liked to try and talk to me about shit."
"Shit? Shit meaning stuff you don't know about or stuff you don't wanna talk about?"
"A bit of both. They query my relationship with you. And when they talk about Harry I feel like taking your lovers gun and shooting them."
Vasiliki shrugged and slumped into the sofa, stretching slowly with a wary look on his face, lips moving slightly in discomfort. He was about to speak up when a ringing could be heard and he watched with interest as Dave answered his phone.
"Hey... Nah, I'm home now... Vasi is here, yeah... Of course you can, you live here... Well that's entirely up to you... No, I don't think they'll keep anyone awake. It's purely business... Drive safely."
Dave turned to Vasiliki with a smile, turning the kettle on and waiting for the water to boil. He needed a coffee with a little extra goodness mixed in on the sly. "You're in luck. Harry is on his way home."
"Where has he been until so late on a school night? Is daddy slacking again and letting him do as he pleases because daddy feels guilty about his out of work hours job?" When Dave settled beside him on the sofa Vasiliki slouched more, lifting his legs onto Dave's own, nudging his thigh with his toes.
"Ha, you're funny. He's been at a study meeting with some of his class. They had a paper that needed to be handed in at some point soon so I told him he could go. Better than him coming with me."
"You try to shield him from that world so hard sometimes but then you bring it -me- home with you. How's that working out for you mentally?"
"Bit too late to be asking for my opinion and permission to be around my son, don't you think?" Dave snorted, rolling his eyes.
"You're telling me that you don't like me being with him now? Bit too late for THAT, don't you think?"
"Vasi..." Dave sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "It's a very complicated subject."
"Well then maybe you should just tell me your opinion, give me what I need and go to sleep. You look tired, old man."
"You are with someone. Not just someone! You're with E. And yet you snuggle up to my son in his bed, in my apartment whenever you get the chance. It's not good for either of you in the long term and I think you know that deep down but I don't have the fucking heart to stop you because you're such a needy kid most of the time. 'Argh, E didn't kiss me goodbye this morning, Harry. Can I sleep in your bed again?' and my son falls for it all the fucking time."
"You're being a dick, Dave. It's hurting my head." Vasiliki changed positions, head between his knees, groaning.
"Vasi, sit up and let's do this before he comes back because, contrary to your belief, I care about my son and his feelings a great deal and yes, I do work hard to shield him from this shit. I'd work hard to do the same for you if I thought I stood a chance against E. But you belong to him."
Vasiliki tried to relax every muscle in his body as the needle pierced his skin, Dave not shaking in the slightest.
"I love him, you know?"
"Which one?"
