The Difference Between Sun and Moon

Chapter 1: Moon Phase I

"Mitsuki! Report front and center!" A young woman gracefully drops from the tree landing in position. "Mitsuki, Reporting, sir: the perimeter is clear and there are no hostility sensed around the grounds. Is there anything else I can do to be of service to you, sir?" The lady keeps her head down until she feels a slight ruffle of her hair. "Yes, I would like you to go home and ask your mother make sushi for dinner with this fresh salmon I caught" Kenshi Hanzo looked at his daughter of 19 years as he handed her the salmon with a nod. Mitsuki Hanzo had grown into a beautiful young woman with long hair and stunning eyes that held no clue to her inner thoughts. As she runs off, Kenshi notes the longing in the face of many of the young men she passes by.

Mitsuki made it to the house and creep slowly upon her mother not making a sound 'I know I got her this time' she thought. "Oh Tsuki, you're home!" her mother said happily as she continued to stir the tempura batter. "Aye ya! How do you always know?!" Mitsuki pouted a bit releasing the emotions she held in during the day. "Because I am your mother and I know my daughter" Raina squeezed her only child in a hug. 'She is no longer a child, She's a woman now.' thought Raina. Her daughter's body developed over time from a small fragile child into a strong, cunning woman. "Ma, I need more breast bindings. They still move too much in my uniform." Mitsuki said as she went into her room and dressed down into a simple red kimono. "Again?! You are developing so fast now that you're older." Raina mentions as she stops to prepare the salmon for sushi as she knows her husband will want. "Between your hip growth and your bust, you should make a man very happy!" Raina laughed, knowing her daughter had no desire at the moment to settle down much less engage in what more than half peers already had. "Ma! I do not want to talk about that. I don't want or need a man to make me happy, I have you and dad. Chiho, Satsu, Kanoji, and Ibuki who are wonderful friends and are like family to me. Don't think marriage is for me." Mitsuki gave her mother the same monologue every time she brought up sex or men. Her mother always was unashamed of sexuality whether it was speaking or when she enjoyed her father’s presence, sex seemed like second nature to her mother and that’s why her mother taught sex education at the ninja schools.

"Are you still embarrassed by your hormones? You're a growing girl with raging hormones; I'm surprised you haven't taken one of these scraping young men to bed. I bet Kanoji being your friend would help you by being you're first. Yes, he would be perfect because he's your friend and he will be gentle and he knows your body since you train together. What you think?" Raina still rambled on not giving Mitsuki a chance to answer. "Kanoji has grown handsome, but I don't know if he will be able to satisfy, oh well, all you need is you're cherry popped anyway, so if he's small or isn't great in bed, the next time your with someone whose adequately skilled, like your father, you won't have much pain." Raina smiled down as she continued to prepare dinner, not taking any offense to her daughters blatantly red face and now fully developed anger. "HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT WITHOUT BATTING AN EYELASH?! WHAT MOM PUSHES THEIR CHILD TO HAVE SEX, MUCH LESS TALK ABOUT IT SO UNCANDIDLY WITH THEIR DAUGHTER?! THAT'S CRAZY!" shouted Mitsuki, who was still too embarrassed to look up as she expressed her dismay.

Raina looked over her shoulder at the defeatist look on her daughter's face and felt a little guilty, and then she lightly cut her. "Firstly, I am your mother and you will not yell at or near me. Secondly, I just think that you need to loosen up, you are so uptight and being flexible, graceful, and loose makes a good ninja which you strive for everyday. There is a reason the other girls can do some of the simple exercises that you can't. They are loosened up, they have fun. All you do is work on your skills, come home after a kill, and study. You're just like your father" Raina soothed the mark on her daughter's pale skin. She hated to do it to her, but Kenshi had a rule in the house that had been in place since Mitsuki was a young girl: Absolutely no disrespect, intentional or unintentional, she must be punished immediately. She didn't have the heart to spank her or gut-punch her, as her father did when she was disrespectful, but she did have to obey her husband's rule.

Mitsuki instantly bowed down, "I am deeply sorry for my disrespect, Thank you for teaching me." she said while keeping her head down. "Oh get up, you're dad isn't here or near, for that matter. I hate that phrase. He needed a boy; I just couldn't give it to him." Raina frowned remembering her inability to do the one thing people get married for, but she still had Mitsuki and that was enough. Mitsuki smiled at her mother, "I don't mind the punishments, Ma, and I know dad does what is best for me. I do have smart mouth and that has to be controlled or else I can be killed by my own foolishness." She licked her cut clean from blood and lightly bandaged it in the back. "You are just like him. It’s creepy. I only need Kenshi. Come help prepare dinner." Raina sighed as she thought of her daughter's future.

Mitsuki could easily marry the headmaster's son, Kanoji. They had been friends since they were toddlers and always trained together. His sister, Satsu, adored her and wanted her brother to be with Mitsuki, which she dropped hint to every chance she got. Mitsuki was beautiful, with her heart-shaped face framed by long inky black hair, highlighted with beautiful azure eyes, which turned from icy cold detachment to an overwhelming feeling of swimming in warmth and happiness. Her body was taunt and fit from years of working and training in the brutal ways of the Ryuuketsu clan. Her training did not hinder her body's development as she still had fairly large breast about Cs now that she would have to buy more binding for her and her hips rounded out to what would be considered as child-bearing. 'She doesn't even notice how gorgeous she is, if she would lighten up a bit'  Raina strained in thought. Her daughter was a ninja to a fault for one not born of pure Ryuuketsu blood. She trained, killed, and showed little to no remorse or emotion to the point that either making her mad or making her smile was a huge task only accomplished by her father or herself. Even friends did not seem to faze her, which helped as she was growing up to be strong against the constant challenges, physical and mental.

"Dad! Welcome home!" Mitsuki went to bow at her father as he came through the door. "Evening all, how are my two favorite ninjas?" Kenshi hugged his wife and daughter. "Welcome home dear, which I will be sure to do thoroughly later." Raina whispered the promise in Kenshi's ear. They all kneeled down at their table eating and chatting in between, until Kenshi brought up what Mitsuki dreaded the most: marriage. "I think its time for me to start looking for suitable men in the village for you. You are past the age of marriage now and I want to make sure you are married to someone proper and strong who can take good care of you. I hear word that Kanoji may be interested in your hand. He has an excellent record since his initiation and has always been good to you. I think that if you wish to pursue that relationship then you will be well taken care of indeed. “Kenshi closed his eyes, steadily thinking about Mitsuki's options.  "Father, Kanoji is only a great friend to me. I do not have any desire to make him my husband or much less even a boyfriend." Mitsuki knew she had to tread softly when it came to her father.

Over the last 19 years, Mitsuki's father had always personally taken an interest in her training. Many nights of no food as punishment or having to stay still and quiet in extreme states of cold or heat. He wasn't abusive, he was just tough. He taught her how to fight, survive, and conquer her opponents and obstacles with great strength and precision. He made her the ninja she was. "To give up, is to ask for death" she could hear her father's voice as she tight roped across dangerous heights or meditated on beds of needles. "Death is the weak's wish being granted and delivered justly" that was the way that Kenshi Hanzo had taught her to believe and it was that mantra she remembered before she killed someone. "We are here to purge the world of those who need to be disposed of. Every kill is another meal in your stomach and a way to put clothes on your back. Be thankful for vengeance, passion, and weakness, because without them we could not exist." Mitsuki was brought out of her reverie with a slight nick of a blade.

"You're becoming to slow to dodge table attacks, Tsuki; we must revisit this in your training. Never let your guard down or you will die a death of a fool." Kenshi finished his meal and prepared for bed. "Yes, father. Good night". "Ma, go ahead and take your bath, I will clean up the dishes here." Mitsuki reached for the wok and plates. “Oh, how sweet of you Tsuki. Thanks. Love you. Good night." Raina left her daughter to think.’ She will have plenty of time to think washing dishes and bathing that’s for sure. Let's just hope she doesn’t think too hard'. Raina's mind wondered until she entered the room of her husband where thoughts were left on the other side of the door.

'How can everyone around me think I should be married? I haven't even lived my life yet. So stupid and frustrating. I understand it though. I just need to head out of here for a few days that’s all. Spend some time with Chiho and Ibuki so I can sort this thing out.' Mitsuki confirmed the plans in her head and planned to tell her mother tomorrow about her trip so that she could have food and water. 'Father will not be happy about this, but I will just have to train extra hard before the Blood ceremony.' Mitsuki went to bed with her mind filled with thoughts.

------Next Day------

"Morning Mitsuki, your dad has already left for a mission this morning. Want some breakfast?" Raina said cheerily. "Sure Ma I would love some." Mitsuki was dressed in her black priestess robes given to her by her dear friends Chiho and Ibuki. “Great, but we have to out into town to pick up a few things." Raina's short stature was very evident in the simple black and red kimono she wore and her hair piled into an elegant bun. “Ma, you sort of look like a little kid right now, with all the flowers on that kimono. Are you sure you want to wear that one to town?" Mitsuki knew her mom was youthful appearing barely over the age of 30, but she only stood 5'4". "Yes, it will be fine dear lets go." Raina and Mitsuki picked up the basket and headed to market.

"Mother, I am leaving for the Shrine today. Would you mind preparing me a bento box for the road?" Mitsuki mentions as she helps her mother purchase herbs and spices loading them into the soon to be overflowing basket. "Oh, Tsuki, Why? There is no reason to run off to that Shrine with those girls. You have something on your mind I understand that, but going away is not the answer." Raina's delicate features became flushed with disappointment and hurt. "Beside you just got back a day ago from doing that mission and now you want to run off, am I that bad of company for you to want to run off at every moment you can snatch?" 'Ay ya! Should've known I would not be able to leave without mother trying to guilt trip me' Mitsuki thought of a good explanation and addressed her mother.

"No that's not it at all mother. I value every moment you have with me and I with you. I love you, you are the woman who has taken care of me for 19 years, but we know that life is short and there will be a day when I can't run to you anymore with the burdens of my mind. I feel as thought I have burdened you with my life since the moment you found me and though you had problems of your own you saw fit to keep me here you and papa. I just rather take my thought burden mind to a place for cleansing. I promise to be back for the ceremony. Please mama?" Mitsuki only hoped it was enough to convince her mother.

"Oh sweetie, I didn't know that’s how you felt. Alrigtht what would you like in your bento box?" Raina's unshed tears disappeared in her sleeve as she concentrated on the new task. "Anything you feel like ma everything you cook is amazing." Mitsuki stated. Her mother had unrivaled skills in the kitchen and a bento box was a special treat sure to be filled to the brim with sushi, sashimi, and rice cakes. Both mother and daughter now emotionally happy for the moment.

"Hmm, The air seems to be thick with emotional weakness, must be the Hanzo women." A tall slender woman who towered over Raina as she shopped spoke. "Good morning to you as well Mistress Kazuki. How is her ladyship fairing today?" Raina smiled brightly despite the insult. "I am the wife of the clan's leader, I am always well. I should ask how you are with your husband being gone on every mission deemed fitting for him to go. You would think he was avoiding his home life. Why should he do that instead of siring a son with his pretty little woman at home? Ah yes, because you can't serve him properly, isn't that what the doctor said?" Kazuki's eyes sparkled with malice and victory. Kazuki's position in life was above many other women in the village. She was the daughter of the old leader and now wife to the current one, but everyone knew that Raina was the leader's first choice in a wife and she was always angry that Raina even existed putting her own status at detriment if Kenshi were ever to die on a mission.

"Lady Kazuki, your words about my husband leaving on every mission are true. He does indeed travel more now, but only because of the upcoming Blood ceremony in which we wish to buy Mitsuki some new attire. As for children, well, Mitsuki is more than enough to make any parent proud and I am glad I didn't have to ruin my figure to have her in my life. My husband believes I serve him properly outside and inside of the house and his approval is the only one I seek, and I would much rather my husband go earn money for food than lay on his back for a breadcrumb, but now I must be going. Tell your lovely children, Kanoji and Satsu, I said hello. Good Afternoon to you, my lady" Raina smiled sweetly and disappeared into the crowd to search for her daughter.

----at home----

"Well, Ma, I think there is enough food here to feed an army. Ibuki and Chiho will love to have some. Thank you so much." Mitsuki was packed and ready to head off to the mountains. "Tsuki, take care about the bandits around that area, especially when you aren't close to the Shrine. Take care, sweetheart." Raina waved at her daughter. "I will, Ma, I love you and I will be back in 5 days!" Mitsuki disappeared into the trees on her way to the Shrine. 'And then there was one' Raina thought to herself as she watched her daughter faded from sight, letting silent tears fall from her eyes.
