For A Change
Chapter 2
"I can't believe I'm finally in a mall!" Carmen was grinning. She was obviously excited. Hayley smiled at her and Carmen winked back at her, to which Hayley chuckled.
Carmen wasn't able to go out much. She had her own car, but her parents were strict and only allowed her to go to school and then back home during schooldays. They were nice people and Hayley met them before. They were just very protective about their only daughter. Carmen had four other siblings, all of them were boys. Her parents had always wanted a baby girl and when she was born, she was like a blessing. Her brothers were very protective of her too. All that attention from her family was the reason she didn't have a boyfriend yet. Unlike Hayley, she was straight, but she had no problems about homosexuality. For her, love was love and it didn't matter what form it took.
"Come on, guys, let's find a place to eat before the boys bring us to another fast food chain," said Katie, draping an arm around Hayley's shoulders and turning her to the direction of the restaurants. Jonathan and Peter had gone to the restroom and told the girls to go on ahead.
"Yeah, last time they made us eat at this chicken place. The food was so greasy, not to mention tasted a bit funny," added Hayley, feeling a bit better now. It was good to be hanging out with friends like this. It took her mind off bad things.
"Oh hey, can we go somewhere Italian? I'm craving for some pasta," said Carmen. Hayley and Katie agreed. They surveyed the row of restaurants in the area and found a decent Italian restaurant with a decent price range too.
It didn't take long for them to be seated. The waiter gave them menus, which Carmen eagerly opened and busied herself with. Katie told him that they will order once their two other companions arrive. She noticed Hayley spacing out again. Katie sighed and held her friend's hand.
"Hey, cheer up, okay? Let's just try to have a good time," she said and gave the girl a smile. She brushed a few strands of jet black hair away from Hayley's face. Hayley smiled back at her. Katie was a sweet friend as well. Hayley was very thankful for her. Katie always managed to make her feel better. Like Hayley, she was into girls, but she was also interested in boys. Right now, Katie was dating a boy, but she'd always tell her friends that it wasn't something serious.
They were still having that sweet friendly moment when they heard clearing of throats and chuckles from across the table. Katie and Hayley rolled their eyes and turned to Jonathan and Peter, who have now taken their seats.
"We were half-expecting you two to kiss any time soon," said Jonathan, still laughing. Peter denied it, but laughed anyway. Carmen, by now done surveying her menu, shook her head and bonked the boys' heads with the rolled up paper. This time, it was Hayley's turn to laugh, followed by Katie and Carmen. Peter soon joined them, while Jonathan frowned.
"I seriously don't know how she manages to get that thing at the right time," he said, rubbing his head, pretending it hurt badly.
"Be happy she doesn't produce a baseball bat out of nowhere instead," said Peter, with another chuckle. Jonathan glared at him, but agreed and laughed anyway.
"They must want another one," said Carmen, smirking. The boys stopped laughing and thought of random things to stop Carmen from hitting them again. This made Hayley smile. This was definitely a breath of fresh air, she thought.
"Okay guys, let's get to ordering. I'm starving," said Katie. Carmen finally put her weapon away and the boys calmed down. Everyone looked at their menus, and when they were finally sure of what to order, they called the waiter to them.
Jonathan and Peter ordered a pepperoni pizza for them to share, while Carmen ordered some carbonara. Katie ordered herself some lasagna and Hayley ordered some seafood pesto. It didn't take long for everyone to be served. They eyed their meals and they realized how hungry they really were. The boys grinned at each other and grabbed each other a slice of pizza. The girls laughed a little, commenting at how childish their friends were, but started eating anyway.
