Storm Warning

Ch 01 – Storm Warning
Bates Residence, 3:23 PM, Saturday

The ride home was ponderous in its silence. Heck, it was chock-full of ponderosity. I laughed.
L.L. looked at me, curious, and unsure. I rubbed shoulder-to-arm, and tried to soothe her:
"I was just thinking how this situation if full of 'ponderosity', which reminded me of the 'Ponderosa'.
L.L. gave one of those polite smiles one gives when someone mentions something, again,
that was funny the first hundred; our house is on the corner of two streets named "Bonanza".
It’s an old joke, shared through the neighborhood. We even have the three kids but...I don’t think L.L.
would appreciate it if anyone ever called her "Hoss." In fact, I don’t think I’d appreciate it, either.

"L.L.,..." I began, turning onto the first of those streets, "I just want to thank you, so much. I think
you’re the bravest woman I’ve ever met. I just hope that, when you get your real sister back,
that you can use some of your bravery to make a real connection with her. I don’t think my reactions
to you are all that different from how JoJo really feels, and if you work at it, you two will be
really close." I pulled into the driveway, and parked back in the right-hand side of the carport.
"In the mean time, I hope you don’t mind me taking up space in –URK!"

L.L. gave me one of those stuffing-squeezing hugs. I didn’t mind, because this time, she was hugging me,
not just "her funny sister JoJo". "'JoJo', thanks to you, I’ve already gotten a real sister. Are you sure
you have to change back? You might find it a lot more fun here; you said you don’t have any brothers or
sisters. What if you can’t get back, would that be so bad?"

"If I can’t, then I can’t, and...well, it’ll be a challenge and I’d have to deal with it. Having you
with me to help me through it will be wonderful, but it’s not like 'awesome sister and family' goes in
one pan of scales, and outweighs 'the rest of my life as a man'. If I can, L.L., I’m going to change back,
not because I want you gone, or want me gone, but–" My purse started making noise. Knocking sounds,
and a muffled voice said, "Come out, come out wherever you are!" L.L. looked at it, looked at me,
and got a big grin on her face. "I think that’s Cathy calling; you should have her come over.
Open the trunk, and I’ll put the top back on the car." She had already gotten out and grabbed her
duffle from the back, and was walking around the car to set her bag on the trunk of the "family car".
I popped the trunk to let L.L. get the hardtop out, and got my cell phone out of my purse. Sure enough,
it said "Cathy" on the screen. I wondered...could it be Cathy Rockford, down the street? The wall on
the side of the carport kept me from seeing her house directly, though it didn’t stop me from looking.
I was very nervous, as if L.L. had borrowed trouble by bringing her name up, even though it was Cathy’s
call that brought up her name. I stared at the phone in panic. L.L. poked her head in from over the door,
saying, "Is it Cathy?" I nodded, and asked, "How should I talk to her, are we close?" Suddenly,
I realized that the history of a girl I knew from ten years and an alternate timeline ago wasn’t
going to help me here.

L.L. smiled and winked at me. "Oh, yeah, you’re real close. Don’t worry, though, I think she’ll like
the 'new you.' You’re best friends, so you need to talk sometime; you should invite her over. Hey,
ask her to have Amy – that’s her sister – come over." She looked back at the trunk, and returned to
pulling the top out.

Interesting, there’s something she’s not saying, but...okay, let’s find out.
