Agitation

“I trust you have the rough draft completed, Ms. Lowe?”

                “Yes, Mr. Adams. ”

                “Let me see it. ”

Adrienne played it cool on the outside, but on the inside, her insides were burning. Her tutoring sessions are usually twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Due to a sudden change of schedule last week, the session was canceled. Adrienne had an itch and only Mr. Adams could scratch it.

She watched him sit comfortably on his couch, reading the paper over. Without looking up, he pulled out his red pen and began to mark it. Adrienne’s blood boiled, but in anger this time.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

Mr. Adams glanced up at her and continued marking changes on her paper as he replied, “Circling your mistakes. ”

She quickly stood and snatched the paper from his hands. “There is nothing wrong with it! I checked it over and over before bringing it to you! You’re just marking it to be marking it!”

Adrienne watched as his eyebrow rose and he capped his pen.  “If nothing is wrong with it, then why is it that you are failing this class?” He stuck the pen back into his pocket. “If nothing is wrong with it, why do you need a tutor?” He stood, plucking the paper from her hands. “If nothing is wrong with it, then why are you here?”

Adrienne looked away from him then, choosing to stare at the painting on the wall. She didn’t want to admit she was wrong for flipping out like that, but she’s always had a problem with people bringing notice to her mistakes. He knew that. She was sure, but did she sense agitation on his part?

“Well?” Mr. Adams asked. Yes, he definitely sounded impatient. She turned back to him.

“I’m sorry, okay? I need help with it and you know I don’t like it when people point out my faults. ”

He didn’t say anything, just handed the paper back to her. “That is all for today. I want the final draft typed and ready for Thursday. ”

Adrienne took the paper and looked it over.  He only circled two mistakes. The rest were on the edge of her paper. They looked like angry doodles.

So something is wrong. Adrienne opened her mouth to ask him about it, but he was already climbing the stairs to his room.
