Chapter Two

*Chapter Two*

I shuffled into the library at school with a yawn. I stuck out my hand as I reached Luke and he handed me an energy drink with a laugh. I opened it, took a drink, groaned, and then sat on the beanbag chair in the floor.

“Long night?” Luke asked.

I mumbled something and took another drink.

“Jesus, Jo,” Kat said with a smirk. “Go to bed earlier. Be a little responsible.”

I managed to shoot her a bleary glare and stick my tongue out at her. Then I saw Lisette walk into the library. I sat up straighter and ran a hand through my hair.

“Oh Lord,” my friends chorused.

My breath caught when Lisette walked over to me. She stopped in front of me and smiled shyly.

“Um, good morning. I have a question about something I read in the chapter. Could you help me out?” Lisette asked.

“Yeah, of course,” I said. I smiled up at her. “Help me up?”

She offered me her soft, small hand and I took it. She pulled me up and I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from blushing when I bumped into her.

“Sorry. So, let’s go over there?” I pointed to a table and we walked over to it.

Lisette sat down beside me smoothly and I took a deep breath. “So, your question is?”

“The part where Devon was talking to Craig? Is the mention of Artemis relevant or is it random?” she asked me, a puzzled look on her face. “I may be reading into it too much, but if it is, I was going to base my essay on it..”

I took a deep breath, inhaling her hypnotic fragrance that was like a mixture of honey, vanilla, and jasmine. I forced my eyes to travel up from the gentle slopes of her lily white breasts, up her slender neck, and into her beautiful eyes. “It’s very relevant. I’ve actually read ahead and they do a whole spiel on the Greek gods and how some of the characters are reminiscent of them.”

Lisette made a humming noise and cocked her head. Her hair slid off her shoulders and exposed the creamy junction of her neck and shoulder. I tipped my head back and took a deep breath. I let it out slowly. I looked back at her and smiled.

“Anything else, Lisette?” I asked her, savoring her name.

“Well, actually-” she started to say and then scowled.

I raised an eyebrow and turned around in my chair. Lisette’s boyfriend was stomping over to us. I mentally groaned and turned back around.

“Well, I guess your man wants you,” I said with a sigh. “If you need any help later, just ask.”

I nodded at him when he reached the table and then walked over to my friends, glowering. They smiled sympathetically at me and I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. I glanced over my shoulder and narrowed my eyes when Jack, Lisette’s boyfriend, yanked her up out of the seat. I ground my teeth together when he put an arm around her. I could see him squeezing into her frail, flawless skin. He was going to bruise her.

“Why the hell is she dating him?” I hissed. “The asshole.”

Luke and Kat hugged me. I sighed and hugged them back. We chatted for a while and then headed off to our respective classes.
