Thanks to my reviewers, AlmightyGingerOne, Annabellalee, Lisa, and Dei-Chan! You guys totally made my day.

AlmightyGingerOne, if you want to try the Boston accent, just sometimes replace "r" with "h". Like, "pahk the cah" I know it's silly, but it's true!

Anyway, this chapter is still mostly character development, but it definitely picks up in the next chapter.

Chapter 2

Jake kept to himself and continued working on his laptop, with refills being delivered to him by Evan's coworker, Jess. Evan couldn't hear what they were saying, but it looked to him like there was a lot of flirting going on every time she brought over a new refill. And with Jess being so petite, with her bright red hair, green eyes, and an attractive amount of freckles, how could he stand a chance?

Just as well, he thought, Jake's probably straight, and even if he wasn't I don't stand a chance with a guy like that!

Little did he know what was actually being discussed between Jess and Jake...

“Hey Jakey, here's a refill!” Jess chirped at her favorite customer. He's so dreamy! If only he weren't so very very gay.

“Thanks Jess, although you did just ruin my excuse to talk to Evan again,” he replied before taking a sip of his delicious, yet simple, coffee.

“Ohhh...” Jess leaned forward, “Somebody has a cruuuuush!” She can be a little obnoxious at times.

“I don't even know him yet! But I am intrigued. Can you give me any info on the guy?” He asked with puppy-dog eyes.

Who can resist that look? Obviously not Jess.

“I don't know all that much, but apparently Shirley was friends with his mom, who I guess like died or something when he was like 16. I don't know why but I think that's somehow connected to why he is just starting college even though he's old. He's like 23 or 24 or something!”

Jake rolled his eyes at her story-telling skills. “Jess, dear, if you ever say that 23 is old, I might have to tell Richie that you said he was cute. I'm 27, do you think I'm old?”

“Ewww, not Richie! Geez, sorry, I didn't mean anything by it. Anyway, do you want to know more?”

Jake waved his hand for her to continue.

“Ok, well, he has like a brother or sister, I dunno, I only heard the name 'Sam' and that's a boy or girl name, you know? Also Shirley seems kinda protective over him. But that's all I got. She's talked about him before, but this is my first shift with him.”

“That's it? Well, I guess I'll just have to get to know him better myself,” Jake grinned, “I'm certainly looking forward to it.”

After his shift, Evan headed over to his campus to pick up his books.

I can't believe I'm going back to school! It's been so long since high school, I wonder if it'll be hard to get back into tests and homework and studying Evan thought as he waited in the ridiculously long line to purchase his ridiculously expensive texts books. Who would have thought that textbooks for Library Science would be so pricey? Of course the math and science books aren't helping matters either.

As he got up to the register, the cashier (a very bored college student) grabbed the books and rang up their prices before looking up at the customer. When the cashier made eye-contact with Evan, he stared at him for a second then turned to another cashier.

“Hey man, check it out! This guy has freaky eyes!” Everyone in hearing distance all turned to stare at him. Evan began blushing, and lowered his head hoping everyone would leave him alone.

“Hey hey, let me see! Do you wear contacts? Are you a mutant?” Asked the second cashier.

Knowing they wouldn't stop until he responded, Evan quietly told them, “I was born this way. Please, can you finish my order?”

“That's so weird! Yea, ok, that's $435.” The cashier finished the order all the while talking about how weird two different colored eyes are.

As he walked back outside, he quickly put on his sunglasses. He had tried contacts in the past, but in the end it was too costly and uncomfortable. People in his hometown were used to it though, so it wasn't too embarrassing, unless he was being bullied by the kids in school. It seems he'll just have to get used to all new people asking the same-old questions.

The next morning Evan was able to sleep in a little late since Shirley gave him the day off so he could enjoy his first day of classes with a normal amount of sleep. Being used to waking up early, he still got up at 7am and headed to the cafe to get some coffee.

“Evan! I told you to sleep in today!” Shirley exclaimed once she caught sight of him.

“I did, kind of. Usually I get up at 5:30...”

“Honey, that just isn't normal. Double small mocha?” Evan nodded, amused that she already knew his drink. He tried to pay for it, but she just chuckled and pretended not to see the money.

As he looked around for a place to sit, he noticed Jake just as Jake looked up from his laptop and noticed him.

“Hey, I was disappointed that I wasn't going to see you today, but it looks like you just can't stay away for long.” Jake said with a smile as he moved his briefcase off of the extra chair.

“Come and sit, I needed a break from work anyway. It's too early for this!”

Not wanting to be rude, Evan made his way over and sat down, forgetting to say anything due to his embarrassment.

“So, am I going to have to wait for you to drink your latte before I get to hear your voice,” Jake asked before taking a sip of his own drink.

Evan jumped a little, “Oh! Sorry, no, um...hi.” Geez, who knew making small talk was going to be so hard. As he twisted his napkin nervously in his hands, he tried to think of something to say.

“Um, what are you doing? I mean, for work, if it's work that you're doing. I mean, what's you job?” Great, now he sounds like an idiot.

Jake merely smiled at his flustered cutie. “I am, in fact, working now. I'm a restaurant reviewer for a magazine. Do you know of Food and Times?” Evan nodded.

“Well, I write for them, so that's why I usually start working so early, so I have my afternoons and evenings free to try out new places if my boss asks me to. What about you? Obviously you work here, but I heard you're in college too.”

Evan, highly impressed with Jake's job, felt his career choice would seem lame by comparison. However, it would be impolite to ignore the question or to lie, so he quietly answered,

“I'm studying Library Science, with a focus on classification and preservation,” he looked down at his hands, still destroying the poor napkin, waiting for the laughter to begin.

“Well, I gotta say I've never met someone going into Library Science before. Is there somewhere specific you want to work at?” Jake asked, honestly intrigued.

Evan looked up in surprise. He actually wanted to keep talking to him? He didn't think his career choice was silly?

“I don't have a specific company in mind, and I'm not sure where I would like to end up. Somewhere not in the city though.” Not wanting to seem like he was only going to talk about himself, Evan tried to turn the conversation around.

“What restaurant are you writing about now?”

Jake knew what Evan was trying to do, but let it go and answered his question. He'll get more information about Evan later on, but for now was willing to let him stay in his comfort zone.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

After a full day of classes, most of which were simply the professor explaining the syllabus and then letting them leave early with reading assignments, Evan was glad to go back to his tiny apartment. He had to dodge question from curious classmates in each class, while at the same time trying to be friendly. He knows it's mostly harmless curiosity, but it still makes him uncomfortable.

After debating about it for a few minutes, Evan decided to call Sam.

“Hey bro! Dude, can I call you later, we're heading to the dining hall now. Actually...then there's a movie in the commons. Is it cool if I call you tomorrow?” Sam spoke loudly, clearly in a place with a lot of noise.

What could he possibly say? No, please talk to me. I'm lonely and tired and I miss you? There's no need to worry his brother like that.

“Yea, of course. Have fun, I'll talk to you later” was his response.

Stuck with nothing to do but analyze his thoughts, he thought about Jake.

It seems like he's flirting with me, but maybe that's just how he is? Maybe he just talks to me as an excuse to take a break from writing?, Evan thought with a sad smile,

It's nice though, to have someone to talk to sometimes. Maybe I'll actually have a friend here.
