The Pitch
The Pitch
“Look giving me the silent treatment only entices me even more. Just tell me how the date went.” Rachel followed Emily down the aisle as they came to a stop at the elevators.
Emily still refused to acknowledge her. She pushed the button and waited patiently.
“You are seriously going to ignore me for three days straight. I'll fucking follow you home.” Rachel threatened.
Over the weekend Emily did not take any of Rachel's call, finally Monday at the office. The whole day Rachel was insistent on finding the details of Friday night.
The elevator doors opened and Emily stepped in. Rachel followed, “Come on don't over react.” Rachel taunted as Emily spun around her eyes wide.
“If you know the details of my fucking date, why are you pestering me?” Emily turned around again and crossed her arms.
“Because I want to hear your side of the story.” Rachel played with a light reddish strand of hair while she looked down at Emily from where she leaned on the wall.
The elevator dinged and the doors opened as Emily walked pass people trying to get in and turned down a hallway aiming for the cafeteria.
“How about I buy Lunch and you can rant all you want.” Emily looked back, “I can get anything I want.” Rachel smiled, “Sure get the fucking steak if you want.”
“I better hear no bitching,” Emily warned as she wagged her finger and got in line with a tray.
Rachel followed close behind, grabbing small portions knowing that Emily was going to rack up the bill. Emily was, as she grabbed the main course, followed by pasta and dessert, she grabbed two different drinks and a damn salad to top it off.
Rachel's dark brown eyes widened when everything was rung up. “Damn you,” she muttered handing over two twenties.
“Hey I said no bitching.” Emily led the way to a table.
“Ok well spill,” Rachel urged finally seated and ready for the gossip she was dying for.
“What exactly are you looking for?”
“I don't know give me the juicy stuff.”
Emily dug into her salad first, “We went to Tres aMis, were the whole fucking evening she flirted with the waitress.”
Rachel smiled, “no fucking way,”
Emily nodded, “I ended up getting wine spilled on me, water jug spilled over my head and to top it off, I have blister in my mouth from when I bit myself. It's a bitch to eat.”
Emily rubbed her cheek, it didn't matter if she was in pain, she was going to enjoy her lunch no matter what.
“Then we went back to my place. That's it.” Emily said while she drank her water first.
“Bullshit,” Rachel pounded her first on the table. “You put out didn't you.” Rachel whispered as she leaned in closer. That was the detail that Rebecca would not admit, and she was curious.
“No,” Emily stoically replied.
“Sure,” Rachel winked at her. “So when’s the next date.”
“There will be no next date.” Emily replied hastily as she kept eating and ignored the rest of Rachel's inquiries.
Rebecca was lost in thought when her older brother Zach interrupted her train of thought by patting her head.
“Where are you at?” Rebecca smiled as she glanced down at the papers she had in hand again. “No where in particular,” she answered smiling.
“Sure,” he pulled up a chair and sat next to her taking the papers from her hand. “How was that date from Friday?”
Rebecca smiled dubiously, “Oh my gosh it was one hell of a night.” She chuckled, “Is that so? Did your faux pa charm work on her.”
“Faux pa? Don’t hate the ability I have with women, but I don’t know what did. I would have sworn I wouldn’t gotten pass her front door.”
“Enough no more details please spare me. Tell Joseph the juicy stuff you know he relishes in gossip.”
“Speaking of him, when is coming back?” Zach reached for a fruit that was on the table; Rebecca beat him to the apple he was aiming for.
“Bitch,” he muttered as he settled on the pear. “He should be back tomorrow,”
“Aww,” she took a bite, “I’m not gonna be able to see him.” She uttered while chewing.
“Stay the week, I know you can take days off, from that job of yours.” Rebecca glared at him. “Don’t you dare judge what I do. It’s very flexible and yes it allows me to leave on days and come spend some time here.” Rebecca smiled, she was a computer programmer, her main specialty was website design, and company networking. She ran her own business; it was small but very effective and known.
“I’m going back to install this program I designed, I might see Rachel, should I relay a message.” Zach blushed, he was madly in love with Rachel, but alas Rachel was not interested in men in that aspect.
“No, you know damn well she and I will never.”
“Hey love has no gender, maybe you know. Who knows, I mean Rachel dumped me in college for a guy.” Zach felt his heart beat faster, if only that was the case now.
“Just get out of here before you bring me down.” He waved his hand looking away. She stood up and placed a hand on his muscular shoulder. “Hey either move on, or fucking try, just wondering what if does you no good.” He patted her hand.
“Go on, you don’t want to get back to town really late.”
Rebecca made it back to her condo close to midnight, she checked her answering machine, while she sorted her shoulder bag, putting her laptop in and a couple of disc she had burned along with some flash drives and external drives.
“You have three new messages” the voice filled the room.
“Message one: Hey Becca it’s me, I want more details on your date with Emily. That fucking text was not good enough call me.” Rebecca shook her head, fucking Rachel she thought.
“Message two: Hello Ms. Demery this is Ansel from Accounting down at Hast inc. We wanted to confirm, your arrival tomorrow to reset the network and to estimate how long it would take. Sorry for calling your house number we have accidentally misplace your card. Please call me as soon as you get this it doesn’t matter the time. Thank you.”
Rebecca chuckled a bit, someone is in trouble. I guess the supervisor wasn’t informed that they were going to be offline for a couple of hours. A lot of banking was going to be pause.
“Message Three: Hey…look this is weird, but I wanted to talk to you again. More civilized on my behalf…Look I –god I don’t even know how to say this. Look Rebecca I think we need to talk about what happened Friday night, I. I don’t do this sort of thing, I mean I do have sex but, oh god fuck
I’m rambling, ah shit-.”
“End of Messages”
“Oh you are adorable,” Rebecca picked her phone up and called Ansel.
“Good Evening/Night Hi this is Rebecca Demery, sorry about the late reply.”
“No no I’m glad you called,” Ansel sounded sleepy as tried to wake up.
“I’ll be arriving close to eight in the morning; I think you should expect to be off line for four hours. It really depends how fast your LAN is and such.”
Ansel was muttering and she knew that was a long time to be offline “Is there anyways to lessen the time.” He asked worriedly.
“Look how about we do this and it’s the only other option I have. I can start the process at five in the morning, I need someone to let me in, but that means I have to increase the commission. I’ll be out of the office by maybe eight ish.
She could hear his relief, “Sure that’s fine, how much are we talking about now?”
“The new total,” she pulled out her phone and got the calculator as she calculate what she had to pay her two partners and just the fucking fact they were going to wake at four, which gave her three some hours to sleep.
“8,” she said, she heard Ansel hissed. ”its fine write a new invoice and we’ll do the transfers when were up and running again.”
“Great see ya at five,”
She hung up and groaned, “FUCK,” she dialed again, “Come on,” she uttered when she heard the other line come alive.
“Hello,” the groggy voice answered, “Hey Michael I need you guys to meet me at the bank by five.”
“Five?” he looked at his clock and started changing the alarm. “I changed the commission, but we need to be there by five ok.”
“Who is it?” the sleeping figured next to him asked. “Becca” he answered and Rebecca added, “Tell Tess I’m sorry for the last minute reminder, I just got back in town.”
“What ever see ya in the morning”
“Yeah,” Rebecca replied to a dead line.
By Morning, Emily and Rachel both walked in simultaneously into the lobby of the bank. Everyone was congregating around drinking coffee and eating donuts.
“What time is it?” Rachel as Emily glanced at her watch, “Eight ten.”
“Hey there are some donuts and coffee, we’re offline still for a half hour tops I hope.” Ansel replied as he pointed to the tables that had been set up with things.
“Oh don’t mind us,” Rachel replied while walking. Emily saw Ansel pace about, he was nervous, he had been selected to upgraded the software system and if it failed. There went his promotion. His short brown hair looked messing probably from running his hands through them constantly.
Emily joined Rachel still eyeing Ansel. “He’s a mess, I bet Tim I riding his ass. He’s lucky we don’t officially open till nine.” Rachel eyed Ansel and noticed a short woman approaching him with a clipboard; she had short brown hair and was dressed in a pair of khakis and a dark black blouse. He held two fingers up as she nodded. His face finally showing relief shook her hand.
Ansel walked to the middle of the Lobby, “Hey can I get everyone’s attention.” The murmuring came to halt as he clapped his hands, “Thank and sorry for the delay the new system is up and running. For those of you who missed the orientation about how the program runs and what it can do. There will be two more orientations added, if you want a refresher course please come by. One will start in thirty minutes and the other after lunch. Both of them in the main conference room. It’s a first come first seat basis.” He nodded, “that is all.”
Everyone started to make way to the elevators. Rachel grabbed Emily’s hand, “Come on Let go to conference room I wouldn’t mind postponing work.” Emily followed suits squeezing into the elevator.
“I heard everything is accessible,” she heard muttering trying to ignore the overlapping conversations.
She stood outside the conference waiting in line, “Oh my god,” Rachel squealed as she threw herself on one of the men that was packing his things. “Mike,”
The tall brunette man stood up, “Rach you sly dog, how you been.” He picked her up as he hugged her, “Hey you have to meet my wife Tess,” he exclaimed excitedly.
“Oh my gosh short girl, I saw her in the lobby.”
His eyes sparkled, “Oh you guys have to meet.” Rachel’s eye widened as she turned to look for Emily who had already disappeared into the conference room. “Shit hold on,” Rachel said as she tried going in.
“Sorry Rach it’s full your gonna have to catch the one after lunch,”
“Fuck,” Rachel muttered. She forgot to warn Emily.
Emily sat down between two men who were new to the company. The light dimmed a bit except for the podium area.
Emily pulled out a notebook from her suit case, “Good morning,” that voice Emily though.
“I will try to make this as painlessly and ‘un-boring’ as possible unless you want me to lag it so you can skip a bit on work.” Numerous chuckled filled the room as she looked up to meet green taunting eyes.
