~~~~~~~~~
That night after my run I felt a bit more worn down helping me fall asleep easier, despite the nearness of the full moon. I left my ring on just in case…
~~~~~~~~

It was another full moon, and I felt the power thrumming through my form. I hopped from one place to another playfully nipping at the tails of some of the others

Restless.

They couldn’t catch me, they didn’t was to,

Strong.

Two forms abruptly appeared on either side of me, effectively stopping my movement

Power.

I looked from one to the other, recognizing their forms and giving them wolfish grins. My mother looked at me sternly and I forced myself to be still

Restless.

My tail was moving despite my best efforts as I turned my face to the moon above us. My dad nuzzled my neck, his way of telling me to behave. I tried to slow my panting and soon I was in more control of the rush I was feeling. I watched as my mother slowly made her way to the center of the pack with an aura of power surrounding her body, an aura that was only rivaled by her mate, my father. As I watched her I could feel it creeping in me again.

Restless

I tried to push it back

Power.

The need to prove myself

Strength

The need to show what I could do.

Instinct

The need to fight…

~~~~~~~~~~~
I fought the scream of pain I felt as I was jolted from my sleep. My right hand was tingling from the pressure of the ring as I struggled to regain some semblance of rational thought. I forced myself to keep my mind sane, and as my breathing slowed I felt the pressure lessen. Closing my eyes I began to counted my breaths, slowing the ache. When the pain became a distant memory, I opened my eyes and looked down at my hand and saw the faint bruise around the ring I wore and sighed. I looked over at my clock and sighed again ‘Midnight… Why?’ I heard a small sound come from my kitchen, followed by a soft mew and I chuckled. ‘And why did she pick now to come back home?’ wondering if my cats really had death wishes lined up in their near futures as I got out of bed to make sure their bowls still had food.
“Hey Mikka.” I said as I saw the red-brown fur of her tail twitching around the fridge where the bowls where. “And where is your sister?” I asked walking softly on the tiles before I was ‘attacked’ by said sister. “Yes Tiri I see you.” I said as she clawed at my exposed leg. Satisfied that she had done enough damage, she joined her sister by the food while I shivered at my closing wounds. I walked forward and laughed to myself at the sight of them so comfortable in my presence when a knock jarred the silence. I frowned as I looked in the direction of the door. ‘Who in God’s name comes to see people at this time of night?’ The scent that wafted through the door reminded me of something wolfish and I cringed inwardly as I made my way to the door before the person knocked again.
“Hi.” My bubbly neighbor and local alpha greeted me as I opened the door.
“Hi.” I replied averting my gaze out of practice.
“I was hoping you were up, may I come in?” I opened the door wider and stepped aside allowing her too pass by me, inwardly hoping she wouldn’t stay too long, but still managed to admire her figure. It was obvious by her exposed legs that she ran a lot and often. I tore my eyes away from her legs to focus on my cats who were now arched backed and hissing at the unwanted presence. I sighed and calmed them before moving them to my room. When I got back she had an amused look on her face “I honestly never took you for a cat person.” She said smiling
“I’m an animal person.” I said shrugging my shoulders, still not meeting her eye properly.
“Do you want to run with us for the full moon?” she asked and I paused. I always did. Deep down I knew I wanted to. I wanted to run with a pack on a full moon, to feel that power again, but I still felt raw from the last time. I shook my head. I didn’t want to risk it. I never did. I could feel her eyes on me “I’m not asking you to join the pack you know.” she continued. It was the same thing every month
“I know, I just… can’t, not… not now anyway.” I said, trying to choose my words carefully. Every month since I came she came with the same question, the same offer. It was a form of protection I suppose, running as a pack. You have others to watch your back in case of a problem, and a sense of family. She nodded slowly I heard the gentle movement of her soft blonde hair as it moved
“I just thought I’d let you know the offer’s still open…” she said a sad smile in her voice and confusion on her scent.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” she turned and left. I heard a soft click as the door closed and I wondered if I could get back to sleep or if it would be a waste of time. I glanced at the clock in the living room. It was twenty past twelve ‘Hmm, felt like longer…’ I chanced going back to sleep, and hoped for a dreamless one…
I stretched in my bed feeling quite comfortable. ‘I don’t want to go to work today…’ turned my head to the clock, quarter past six. ‘Get up Selena don’t lie here as though you want to be like a cat… though…’ I shook the thought from my mind and rolled off my bed and got ready for another day at work.
~~~~~~~~

The day would have been another simple routine day of giving shots and basic checkups if it wasn’t for that kind soul. You see, every so often we’d get a random act of kindness on the part of an animal lover. Today was one of those days. A passerby happened to see a hawk that had been wounded, most probably from a fight, and couldn’t fly. Mentally we all both praised and reprimanded the fool of a man for dealing with the bird. On one hand, the animal would not have been the only patient, on the other (by sheer luck) it was.

We worked quickly and was able to mend most of the damage that was done, but I could tell he wasn’t going to be able to fly as well as before so I suggested calling the zoo to keep him safe.

After our one shot of excitement we fell back to the routine we worked around until it was time to go…

~~~~~~~
Looking to the sky, I was filled with an impulse, a wild impulse that I knew I shouldn’t have entertained… Yet the temptation was just to much. As I reached into the glove-compartment and took out the directions to Marina’s house…
