Part 2

Frank gets the call at 4 AM, Monday morning. Beside him, little Ginger has slept through the ringing. In the last forty hours she hasn't had all that much sleep and is dead to the world. Frank himself is groggy, but he recognizes Mark's voice trembling on the other end of the wire.

"What's wrong, Son."

"I'm s-s-sorry, P-P-Pops. It's t-t-terrible."

"What happened? Let me talk to Grandpa."

"Y-y-you can't. G-g-grandpa is ..."

Frank is wide awake now. "What, Mark? Grandpa is what?" All Frank can hear on the other end is Mark's choking sobs.

Then suddenly a new voice. A strange man's voice. "Hello, Mr. Wilson?"

"Yes. Who are you?"

"I'm Steve Armbruster. I'm with the Essex County EMS. Your father had a massive coronary. We have him stabilized now and are about to take him to the hospital, the Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid. Someone will look after Mark until you arrive."

Frank grabs a pencil and tries to write down all the pertinent information. Steve gives him the AMC phone number, as well as his own cell in case he has to call him en route. "OK, thank you very much, Steve. Please put Mark back on."

"I'm s-s-sorry, P-P-Pops. It-it-it's all my fault."

"Don't be an asshole, Mark. It's not your fault. Grandpa's an old man. His heart isn't too strong. That's all. Now, you be good. I'll get there as soon as I can."

"Yeah, hurry, Pops. Steve is telling me I gotta get dressed now. Bye." And he hangs up. Frank realizes his son must still be naked and Grandpa probably was too when the EMS arrived. A thousand questions chase around inside his head. Had Mark called 911? Frank forgot that two years before, he gave his father a Life Alert pendant to wear. Grandpa was religious about keeping it on, even when otherwise naked. When he'd gotten up to go to the outhouse in the middle of the night (damn prostate!) and fallen on the cold cabin floor, he pressed the pendant. Mark was still asleep when Steve and his crew came inside. Though the temperature was in the low 40's, the medics were not concerned about the nudity. They'd seen it all before, and went about their crucial tasks with professional dispatch.

Frank starts making phone calls, waking four families up in the middle of the night. The Johnsons put Ginny on and Frank tells her he'll pick her up on the way to Lake Placid. He thinks he can be at Jimmy's house around 7. The Bannisters promise to keep Mickey until they hear more. If his Grandpa recovers, they can drive him up to the Adirondacks to see him. And if not... Well, they'll take good care of the boy while Frank and Ginny are gone. Mrs. Margo Boone answers the phone and says she isn't sure where Allen and Frankie are, but thinks they may be sleeping in the pool room. When she hears the news, she also offers to keep Frankie, saying it will be no trouble. But Frank suspects the Boones have family plans for the school break. He pictures the sweet sisters, Jane and Carla, each of whom had spent a separate Friday night in his bed in the last six weeks. No, he says, he thinks it best if Frankie makes the trip with them. It would be good for Mark to have his brother there. Margo promises to have Allen drive him home right away. Then, Frank remembers little Ginger still fast asleep in his bed. He calls her mother, Dody Katz, who arrives still in her nightgown carrying the little baby in a car seat. She says she'll pray for Frank's father. She takes her sleepy girl home and Frank heads out on his worrisome journey.

It's almost noon when Frank, Ginny, and Frankie arrive at AMC. Mark is in the waiting room and races over to hug them, his face covered in dirt from rubbing his tears. Frank picks him up and hushes his renewed attempts to say he's sorry. They learn Grandpa is in ICU and the two adults take turns seeing him for short intervals. They aren't sure if the old man is aware of their presence. The hours pass slowly. They call the Bannisters every hour or so to bring Mickey up to date on what's happening. The decision is made to abort the Washington trip. No one is in the mood. So they call to cancel their hotel reservation. A nurse recommends a B&B nearby where they book a suite for they're not sure how many nights. Frank and Ginny alternate keeping vigil at Grandpa's side and minding the two boys.

On Tuesday morning, a nurse wakens Frank asleep in the hospital chapel and says his father wants to see him. Thank God! Frank puts on the surgical mask and enters the ICU. For ten minutes, Father and Son recite their love for one another, and reminisce about hospitals they've gone to over the years: births, sports injuries, childhood illnesses, accidents. The nurse says Frank should let his father rest, but the old man tells her he'd like to see Mark. It's against hospital policy but she'll see what she can do. In a while, Mark, his mouth covered by a mask and his eyes like two big saucers, is standing on a stool beside the ICU bed.

"Mark," the man whispers, "this isn't your fault." How does he know what has been troubling his grandson for two days? "You made this weekend very special for me. I can't be happier. I want to thank you for being such a wonderful grandson." His words come slowly, almost painfully, but the boy hangs on each one with rapt attention. "My ticker is old, Mark. But there in the cabin when we cuddled, you made it feel young. Please promise me you will always remember how good it was, OK?" Mark nods. He wishes he could hug and kiss the man, but there are all those tubes in the way. He wishes he could crawl in and lie beside him and they could fondle each other's cocks again, but the hospital probably has rules against that. He settles for murmuring "I love you" and "thank you, Grandpa" through his mask.

The man never regains consciousness and and succumbs early Wednesday morning. He is sent to a funeral home in the Wilsons' town, and Frank calls the Bannisters to give Mickey the sad news before gathering his family for the long sad trip home.
