Chapter 2 The Fear

The sounds although repetitive were soothing, the figured in bed kept her eyes closed. By the sounds of it she knew where she was, but sadly that was about it. Everything seemed a blur, everything happened so fast that she couldn’t catch the memories. She knew they were there, but yet she couldn’t keep a hold of them. She felt dizzy and gave up, the more she tried the more she felt it slipping through her grasp. She tried to relax but she could feel discomfort, the pain was throbbing.
She opened her eyes; a white ceiling greeted her, followed by an unshaven face.

“Morning Ellie,”

‘Ellie,’ she thought it seemed fitting almost nostalgic, she smiled a little.

“glad to see you smiling, that was a pretty rough moment,’ the doctor flashed his pen light quickly over her eyes. He touched her legs, her arms, and the right one happened to sting more than the discomfort she felt over all.

“Do you know where you are?” Dr. Mir asked as he looked at his chart, he looked up to see Ellie nod.

“Need water?” he looked to the side, one of the nurse assistant brought the cup and held the straw as Ellie suckled, she felt the moisture run down her neck. She was sucking but her lips felt numb and…

“Don’t worry, the swelling to your brain has your coordination off balance. Don’t worry it’s not permanent.“

“What happened?” she manage to slur out comprehensively as she looked around, she saw machines and lines hooked up to her. She saw the nurses one by one unhooked several off them.

“There was a nasty collision as you were driving back home,”

Ellie closed her eyes, collision? What collision?

Dr. Mir cleared his throat he was glad Ellie wasn’t getting agitated many patient who suffered from memory loss tend to panicked.

“Ellie don’t get alarm if you can’t answer but do you know what day it is?” Dr. Mir looked at Ellie’s reaction and nodded.

Ellie opened her mouth to reply, and then she realized she didn’t know.

“Don’t panic ok,” Ellie’s eyes widened, she was trying to hold it together but she felt scared, and lonely.

“Would you like to see your family?”

‘Family?’ Ellie hadn’t thought of someone waiting for her, but as she recalled she remember her dad, her mom and someone else. She felt a calming feeling as she realized she remembered that much. She closed her eyes, her mom, Maggie, her dad James and…

She opened her eyes and nodded.

Mel was dozing off, she had called the hospital chair bed yet again, and another night had passed as she was just waiting to see how the results of the surgery went.
“when?” was all that Maggie asked, and Mel was forced to explain to her mother in Law that years ago both Ellie and her had set up wills and fixed legal documentation in case of something unforeseen. Of course Maggie thought it was Mel’s Idea. When in fact it was Ellie who insisted, “It be like we’re really married you know,” Mel smiled internally at the reasoning Ellie gave her and the persuasion that followed.

Maggie sat down next to James, “can you believe that?” Maggie whispered to James.
James kept his eyes closed, he kept his breathing even. “I mean the gall of her to decide things for our daughter, OUR.” Maggie hissed closed to his ear. James replied with ‘hmms,’ he knew Maggie didn’t want his opinion, after 40 years of marriage he knew well enough when to speak and when not to.

Lucas sat next to Mel as he placed his arm, around the back rest of her chair and held her.
“Don’t pay attention to her,” he mumbled, he felt her tensed and closed his eyes, “I know I know,” he consoled her.
“It’s not fair,” she breathed out, Mel looked at the doubled doors and was stunned to see the doctor again; All four of them simultaneously stood up.

“She’s awake,” Dr. Mir exhaled as he clapped his hands together and stood rocking on his feet.

Maggie audibly rejoiced and smiled as she clapped her hands together, she hugged James. “See she’ll be fine,” Lucas murmured into Mel’s ear.

“But,” Dr. Mir grimaced internally as he shattered these people’s hopes once again. He swallowed hard as he started to talk.

“Because of the swelling, her motor skills have been affected only temporarily. She has to re-learn them. Think of it as a reboot. The brain rebooted itself and she has to relearn some things and she has to remember some. I’m not sure of the extensive damage to her memory. She seems to be able to recall some things and some may be gone completely, or just repressed.”

“So you’re saying she has amnesia,” Maggie looked at Mel, as the doctor nodded. “The Only thing is that we don’t know what the extensive damage has done to her memory.”
James sat down, it was too much to bear, his little girls not remembering, not knowing, it was like a dream gone so horribly wrong.

Maggie licked her lips; she hadn’t realized she was thirsty. She looked at Lucas who in turn was looking at his father. Maggie glanced at James; she then glanced to see Mel. She never approved of their relationship, she had nothing against her specifically but just them together was a bothersome idea for her. She was going to retort something to Mel when she stopped herself and saw her.

Mel was crying, the tears slid silently down her face. Mel had her arms crossed one hand covering her face as she had a look of a deer stuck in headlights. Maggie saw her break, as Mel just stood there and listened at all the things the doctor explained. All of their lives had been changed, and visibly. Mel saw her life slipped out of her hands.

If Ellie didn’t remember her…
