Running into You: Chapter 2

“We’re having a barbeque on the fifteenth, are you going to come?” Rachel asked him.
Jason was at Chris’s, one of his best friends, house. He leaned back and took a long gulp of his beer. Chris’s wife Rachel, was one of his friends who kept trying to set him up with single women.
“Who else is going to be coming?” Jason asked. If it was going to be another one of her singles get togethers, Jason was going to be running as fast and as far away as he could.
“Only a couple people. Steve and Mandy, me and Chris, you and…would you be bringing someone? If not I know a girl who…”
“Yes,” Jason quickly interrupted her to stop her from the set-up mode she was in. That got Chris’s attention as well.
“Yes what?” Chris asked.
“I’d be bringing someone,” Jason answered, a spur of the moment decision.
“What? Who is she?” Rachel excitedly asked.
Oh God, what did he just do. This was going to be awkward. Was he really that desperate to be left alone?
“His name is Ryan,” Jason answered before he lost his nerve.
His friends stared at him in shock for a minute.
Chris clapped a hand to his back. “That’s awesome man.”
“When did this happen?” Rachel asked with a smile.
“I just met him last week. It’s all pretty new,” he answered, hoping they didn’t ask any more questions.
“Well, I’m looking forward to meeting him. Is he cute?” Rachel asked.
Jason fidgeted with the top to his bottle. “Ummm…”
Luckily Chris saved him by laughing and saying, “We’ll meet his boy in less than two weeks and we’ll be able to see for ourselves.”
She pouted a little but told Jason, “I’m so happy for you.”
At least someone was.

Jason didn’t really know what he was doing anymore. He worked his job, he was a lawyer on the partnership track, and then he came home. He had his friends and that was good, but he just felt so empty.
Even though he felt empty, he knew he didn’t want a woman to fill the void. About a year after the accident he had tried dating, mostly because everyone seemed to be expecting him to. Friends introduced him to friends, there never seemed to be a lack of available women they were chucking at him. But he just felt so broken inside, so deadened to feeling any emotional connection to any person in a romantic sense.
No one seemed to understand that. Friends, co-workers, family, they all seemed to think that he was lonely and desperate to meet someone.
All he wanted was to be left alone.
Maybe that’s why he agreed to Ryan’s insane proposal. He only hoped that the boy would make good on his suggestion.
Ryan. The boy was younger than him, Jason guessed early twenties, especially since Ryan said that he was in college. Physically, he was almost as tall as Jason, and in good shape, probably from running. He was blonde and blue eyed. But where Jason’s eyes were a light, icy color, Ryan’s were a darker, bright blue. And he had freckles along the bridge of his nose. Objectively, Jason thought that Ryan was a good-looking boy.
And there was something about him, his aura, that was friendly, warm, and caring. Jason could sense that their second meeting, when he wasn’t so emotional. He found himself trusting a stranger.
And desperate enough to agree to be in a pretend relationship.
Jason sighed and hoped that their Sunday meeting went well.

Ryan was already there when Jason and Lady arrived at the bench in the cemetery. Ryan gave him a small smile and dug in his pocket and pulled out a treat for Lady. Lady eagerly gobbled up the treat, tail wagging. She seemed to have quickly taken to the boy.
“You bought dog treats?” Jason asked.
Ryan looked embarrassed. “Yeah, I thought if I saw you again, it would be nice.”
“Thanks,” Jason paused, then directly said, “My friends are having a barbeque on Thursday night. I told them I was bringing you. Is that okay?”
Ryan looked a little surprised but replied, “Yeah, sure! That would be good. Did you want to um…have lunch or something to get to know each other better? I mean, if I’m going to be your fake boyfriend, I’ll need to know a little about you.”
“Sure. Could I just have a minute?” Jason asked.
Ryan nodded vigorously. “Yeah, of course. I’ll wait here?”
Jason made his way down to where his wife and daughter were buried.
“Hey baby,” he whispered. “You know how I’ve been sick of being set up? I’ve done something strange. I’ve agreed to be the pretend boyfriend of a boy. A young boy. I guess I’m desperate. Just no woman…no woman is like you. I wanted to let you know. I love you baby. Love you little girl.”
He went back to where Ryan was waiting.
“There’s a diner close by. Did you want me to take you there?” Jason suggested.
“Sounds good,” Ryan agreed.
They both got in the car, Lady in the back. Lady stuck her nose between them and nudged Ryan’s shoulder. He laughed.
“Hey girl,” He stroked her ears.
“She likes you a lot,” Jason commented. It was so difficult for him to make small talk anymore.
“She’s a beautiful dog.”
“Thank you.”
It took about 5 minutes to get to the diner.
Ryan gave Lady one last pat. “You gotta stay here sweetheart.”
They sat in a booth together, a waitress came to them quickly and took their order when they decided.
As soon as she left, Ryan asked. “So, what made you agree to this?”
“My friends. They wanted to set me up with someone again. I just can’t do it again.”
Ryan nodded, his face a picture of understanding. “For this barbeque, are there going to be a lot of people?”
“No, my best friends Steve and Chris and their wives Rachel and Mandy.”
“Have you known them long?”
“I grew up with Steve and Chris. They’re like brothers to me.”
Ryan nodded. “Awesome. Do they think we’ve been dating long?”
“No. I told them we met last week.”
“Good. So if I don’t know all about you it won’t be a surprise,” Ryan grinned. “But I’d like to know some things?” He seemed hesitant, like he wasn’t sure how to have small talk either.
“I’m 30 years old. I’m a lawyer. I do mostly corporate work and contracts,” Jason volunteered the information.
“Wow, you must be really smart,” Ryan complimented.
“You said you’re in college? Studying what?” Jason awkwardly asked.
“Yeah, I’m a senior. I want to be a physical therapist. I want a job that helps people,” Ryan’s face lit up as he talked about his major. “I’m doing some intern work with a local physical therapist and it’s so great. I love the people and seeing them improve and get stronger or gain mobility.”
“It sounds like you’re passionate about your work,” Jason commented.
Ryan nodded. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”
They sat in an awkward silence.
Wow, how were they going to pretend to be dating when they couldn’t hold a conversation with one another?
“What do you do when you’re not being a big shot lawyer?” Ryan asked.
Jason was embarrassed that the answer was, “Nothing special. Walk with Lady. See my friends once a week or more. Read.”
“Oh.”
“What about you?” Jason asked.
“Study a lot,” Ryan laughed. “I’m in the library a lot. Hang with friends. I don’t party that much. I love running.”
“Are you on the track team?” Jason asked.
Ryan’s expression saddened. “I hurt my knee in high school. I needed surgery and I was recommended not to run again. I had a great physical therapist though so I run for fun, but not competitively.”
“Is that what made you choose your current career path?”
“Yeah.” Ryan smiled. “So what made you become a lawyer?”
“Money mostly. But I enjoy it.”
“That’s good. So about this barbeque, am I meeting you there? Or are you bringing me?”
“I can bring you,” Jason suggested. “Where do you live?”
“I’m still in the dorms.” Ryan scribbled directions and his cell phone number on a napkin. “So I’ll meet you out front of the building at…?”
“Four?” Jason had a thought, “Do you have class?”
“I don‘t have class. On Thursday I’m done at two, so four is perfect.” Ryan opened up his wallet and began to pull out money for the meal.
“I got this.” Jason turned away his money.
“What a gentleman you are, paying for our first date,” Ryan teased with a grin.
Jason chuckled lightly. “Of course. See you Thursday.”
