Shadow
Cold and shivering, Reinos made his way back to the inn, noting the local shops on the way. He would need to arm himself before heading out tomorrow, and would buy the best blade and armour he could find.
Going up to the doors of the inn, He began to open the doors, and heard a haunting scream that made him stop. Frozen in the doorway, He waited until the screaming stopped. Fearing the worst, he forced himself to look into the inn. After waiting for a moment and seeing nothing, and hearing nothing more than the sound of the constantly howling wind. He opened the door a little more, and leaned into the doorway to see what just happened. Unfortunately, he leaned too far, and slipped on the wet ground, and came crashing to the floor.
A bloodshot red eye locked onto him as he fell. The eye was that of a wolf with shining silver hair. Its fangs were dripping with blood.
Reinos froze as it stared him down. The wolf jumped at him, and slashed at him, barely missing his face. It kept him pinned to the floor, and began to speak to him. The wolf’s voice wasn’t deep and terrifying. Instead, it was the voice of a young man. “You have seen too much, but I sense you serve a greater purpose. I will let you live, for now at least.” The wolf began to glow a brilliant white, and disappeared in a blinding flash of light. Reinos lied there on the floor, too shocked to move, or even think.
He snapped back to alertness when he heard a glass crash to the ground and shatter, followed by a groan and wheezy breathing. Slowly getting up, he looked around, trying to see where the sound came from. Walking towards the bar, the breathing become louder, until he reached the counter.
As he peered over the edge of the bar, he saw what must be the bartender, lying face down on the ground, covered in blood.
Carefully, Reinos turned him over, and checked the bartender’s injuries to see if he would live. Unfortunately, the bartender’s wounds were deep, and he likely could not live more than five minutes. Deciding to hear his last wishes, Reinos stayed by his side, and began to speak, hoping the man could hear him.
Reinos grasped his hand, and asked him, “Can you hear me?”
“I can hear you”, Came the weak reply from the bartender’s lips, his eyes opening slowly to see who it was.
“You’re safe now.” Reinos told him. “That thing is gone, but it left you with a few deep wounds, and I don’t think you have longer than a few minutes to live.”
“I’ll be fine, just listen to what I have to say. My name is Naruin Milunas, and I have lived and worked in this inn for twenty years now, and kept what I am about to tell you a secret all that time.” He coughed up blood, and tried to continue, even though it put him in great pain to do so. “I can’t speak much more, but please carry out my last wishes. There is a chest under the counter near the entrance. The chest’s contents will decide the fate of many people, if not the whole world’s. The key for the box is in my left pocket. Take it, and open the chest. My niece, Ariena, will tell you what to do next. Please protect her. She will aid you in whatever way possible. I leave the rest in your hands.”
Taking time to understand the importance of this task, Reinos replied with confidence. “I will do whatever I have to in order to accomplish the task you have given me. Rest assured, for I will not fail this task.”
With his last breath, Naruin said, “The fate of many lives rests in your hands. Be careful.” With that said, his eyes closed, and he began a peaceful, eternal sleep.
