Cigarettes and Bubblegum

Two: Cigarettes and Bubblegum

(Characters belong to me and Azathoia. Also, please read his story "Only the Heart Knows Why, Quax's Days"… Have a nice day.)
(Disclaimer: I do not own Matchbox 20 or their song “Unwell“, and I do not own Camel brand cigarettes… Have a nice day.)

The end of the school day comes by slowly. It’s amazing how one class can seem to last for so many hours. Damn history teachers showing boring old documentaries, and then expecting everyone to have stayed awake long enough to have actually learned something so they can pass the pop quiz right afterwards. I know I failed it. I always do.

Kaddar is laughing at me about my lack of answers from that quiz. He actually had gotten them all right. I thought for sure he would’ve slept through it, but he probably got enough sleep earlier, when he spent half the day at home. “You actually pay attention to those documentaries?” I question him, really surprised.

“Why not? Sometimes you learn something interesting. Like how to kill someone, if the need ever arises.” He grins at me, blonde hair falling over his eyes. Is he hinting at something…?

“Why would that matter? Are you planning on killing someone, Kaddar?”

“No, of course not. I may be a bastard, but I’m not a killer.” He takes hold of my wrist, and I glance down at his hand as we walk on the sidewalk. “What about you, though? Think you’ll ever snap and kill someone?”

I try not to think about that particular possibility, but I can’t help it after he asks. The truth is, I think I will, and I even know who it would be. My current guardian, Aledren. That sick-minded freak would definitely fall by my hand… if I knew for sure that I couldn’t get caught. “Kaddar, could I stay at your place tonight?”

I look up at his face in time to see him smile at me. “Of course. You know you’re always welcome to. It would be… so wonderful.” He leans in closer and kisses me. It’s not anything extreme; he knows I don’t like doing things like that in public. Yet the small kiss does make me feel better, and I can’t help but smile back at him.

… I should just walk out right now… but I don’t. The smoke alarm is blaring and I sigh as I grab the fire extinguisher out of the bathroom. I had forgotten the number one rule about Kaddar: Never, under any circumstances, leave him alone in the kitchen. I push open the door and smoke rushes passed me. Nothing too dangerous yet, but I walk in and see him trying to put out a fire on the stove with a rag. Idiot. I hand him the fire extinguisher, and he proceeds to spray whatever the hell he was trying to cook to put out the inferno. It looks like… blackened glob of something inedible. “I really need to stop listening to you when you offer to cook.”

“Sorry, Kanau.” He pouts as he pokes the glob with a knife. I really hope I didn’t actually just see that thing breathe. “Looks like we’ll be going out again.”

I roll my eyes at him. “Listen, we’ll stop by the grocery store and pick up something to cook. I need to get more cigarettes anyway.”

“But I’m really hungry right now. I can’t wait that long to eat!”

“Fine! We’ll go out someplace, but you’re paying.”

“Agreed!” He huffs as he drops the blob into the trashcan.

“What was that supposed to be, anyway?”

“Chicken, of course.”

That was supposed to be chicken? Well, I know what I’m not eating tonight…

The restaurant we end up going to is actually kind of empty, but one look at my watch explains why. It’s half passed seven now. No wonder Kaddar is so hungry. I put my hand down in my lap and look around as we wait for our food. Kaddar is busy looking through the drink menu. “You know you can’t buy any of that shit, right?” I tease him.

“Yeah, but it all looks so good.”

“Only, what, three more years left to wait?”

He puts the menu down and grins at me. “If I hadn’t lost my fake ID, I could get some tonight.”

I’m not surprised that he’d have one in the first place. “How’d you lose it?”

“Well… I sort of lost it at your place when I broke in to fuck you silly one night.”

“What?!” I glare at him. What the fuck was he thinking?!

“Relax, Kanau, I’m only kidding! I think I might have actually left it at Avid’s place by mistake.”

Ick, Avid… “That creepy old man? What the hell were you doing over there?”

“Picking something up.”

I glare at him again, wondering what the hell it could have been.

He watches me, that grin returning to his face. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it whenever I remember to take it out, heh.”

Ugh… That just disturbs me more. I wait out the rest of the minutes silently until our food arrives, and the waitress has us cut into our steaks to see if they’re cooked the way we want. I’m quite pleased with mine. Kaddar makes a face, but tells her it’s fine. Apparently it must be too brown for him. I drink some of my cola and watch him start to eat. For someone who enjoys eating food, he sure as hell can’t cook anything without setting something on fire. Thank god for smoke alarms, or he would’ve been dead years ago.

Once we’re done eating, we head into his car and drive off to the grocery store. I check my wallet for cash and, if needed, ID. Most of the people working there recognize me by now and have stopped carding me, but there’s always the possibility of a newbie working the register I walk up to. Kaddar pulls into a parking place and shuts the engine off. “While you’re in there, could you get me a pack of bubblegum, love?”

“Sure, what kind?” I’m guessing strawberry.

“Whatever, it doesn’t matter.” He kisses my cheek and I climb out, shutting the door behind me. I walk into the store and look around. Not many evening shoppers walking around. I make my way over to a check-out counter and look at the candy rack while I wait for the cashier to return from wherever they went. The light is still on, so they should be here, but they aren’t. My eyes linger on the chocolate. That looks really good right now. I really want one, but I reach for the packs of bubblegum. I only have enough money for my smokes, and the gum Kaddar wanted. After looking at the different kinds of gum on the rack, I finally decide on one, and I turn to see the cashier is back at the register… and has pink hair. Damn it, why the fuck is he here?!

“Hello, did you find everything alright?” He has this really goofy grin on his face.

“Sort of, I want a pack of cigarettes too.” I take my ID out of my wallet and show it to him, making sure to keep the address hidden with my thumb. “Camel light, please.”

“Okay.” He gets the pack out for me after checking to make sure I am indeed the appropriate age. “You know these things are horrible for your health.”

“And dying your hair is horrible if you want your hair to stay healthy,” I counter him, gesturing to the pink on his head.

“Hey, my hair happens to be naturally pink,” he says, ringing up the pack of cigarettes and the bubblegum.

“You seriously expect me to believe that?”

“Well, yeah, ‘cause it’s true.”

“There’s no way you can have naturally pink hair.”

“Well,” he starts, grinning up at me. “Want me to prove it to you then? The restroom’s right over there.”

As it dawns on me what exactly he meant, I glare at him and shove the money into his hand. “You’re sick if you’re willing to dye that too.” I pick my up items.

“I’m telling you, it’s all natural.”

“You’re weird.”

“And you’re hot.” He looks like a deer in headlights after he realizes he said that out loud. “Uh…” He blushes and quickly turns away. “Well, have a nice night!”

I turn and walk away from him. Greeaat, so he does want me after all. Damn him, he better not try anything! I reach Kaddar’s car and get in, handing him his bubblegum he wanted. He smiles happily and kisses my lips, his tongue giving a little lick before pulling back and starting the engine. “I was getting ready to go in after you, you were taking so damn long. What were you doing in there?”

I sigh as he pulls out of the parking lot. “I had to use the restroom,” I lie, sitting back against my seat. I watch the lights pass us out the window. It’s so surreal being in a car at night. The blur of lights, colors, everything seems to blend together. I hear quiet music begin to play after Kaddar turns on the radio. He must think I’m falling asleep, or he’d be talking to me about something right now. Eventually, I do start to doze off. I shut my eyes and the only thing I can hear is Matchbox 20’s “Unwell”. I smile to myself as I listen to words more than the music. Such a nice song to fall asleep to. I’m so vaguely aware of Kaddar’s hand around mine, his thumb gently rubbing, as I drift off just a little more…
