Death and Deliverance
Chapter Two
Death and Deliverance
Where am I?
What is this place?
Why is everything so dark?
Aero awoke with a start, but pain in his chest sent him back down onto his back, gasping for air. From his position, Aero looked around and took in his surroundings. The room, he noticed was dimly lit by a candle on the table beside what he now realised was a hospital bed, on one side of his bed was a door, and on the chair in the corner lay his tattered uniform, blood soaked and torn.
With great pain, Aero stood, and made for his uniform. If this is an enemy field hospital I’m in trouble. Aero put on his combat fatigues but was forced to leave his shirt unbuttoned, the bandage on his chest allowing Aero to find the source of the earlier pain, and also causing his chest to be double its size, pushing painfully on the inside or his shirt. He staggered to the door as pain lanced through his body and black stars exploded into his vision. Aero waited for the pain to subside before opening the door checking to see if the coast was clear.
It was so he moved, sliding along walls to remain covert and also because he wasn’t sure how long he would be able to hold himself up, as another lance of agony shot through the right side of his chest. As he turned a corner, a young Rakin nurse was coming the other way, straight into Aero. Both fell to the floor and Aero cursed loudly in pain as the nurses papers flew over the corridor.
Aero tried to stand, but the pain in his chest flared and brought him to the floor once again. The nurse rushed to Aero’s side, pulling a shot of morphine from the aid kit on her waist and digging it into Aero’s neck.
The pain instantly subsided, and Aero rolled onto his back, gasping ragged breaths of air. Looking down on him, the nurse brushed a stray lock of hair out of her face and behind an ear as Aero opened his eyes.
My God, she is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen…or is it just the morphine?
Aero looked up into the eyes of a young Foxkin, a humanoid Fox. Know I see why a female Fox is called a vixen… Aero thought as the drugs took effect on his battered body. It took what seemed like an age for him to realise that he had lost himself in her incredible blue eyes, and much less time to realise that he didn’t care. He looked up at her as she worked on his body, to his drugged and pain filled mind her hands had become a blur, and it took him a while to realise that in the commotion, his stitches had split.
The vixen noticed Aero’s appreciative looks and looked away blushing; she had to admit to herself, this Wolfkin was handsome.
“My names Aero” came a straggled and dry voice from below her, “what’s yours?”
The Vixen was shocked when she looked down and saw the Wolf-boy smiling at her, as if he were flirting with her in a bar. “Karin” she said.
“Pleased to meet you Karin. Now, could you do me a favour, and tell me whose hospital this is?”
This was the moment Aero had been dreading, in his bones he knew this would be an enemy hospital, and that he would have to kill this girl to escape.
“You don’t have to worry; this hospital isn’t anything to do with the war. Here we care more about saving lives then whose lives they are, we’re neutral to both sides. Your safe here Aero”, Aero’s eyes widened, he hadn’t even thought he could be in a neutral zone. The neutral zones were few and far between in this war, the two major continents of the planet engaged in a war for territory.
Knowing he was safe, Aero slipped again into unconsciousness, hearing a gentle giggle as he did so.
