Starting Plans

Thanks so much to those who rated and reviewed my story. I know the first chapter didn't really let in on too much and this one is short and sweet but it will progressively grow I promise.....

Cyn laid in bed, a thin sheet pulled across her body as she hugged her pillow. Sunlight warmed her face as she slowly forced open a heavy eyelid. At first she felt that last night was a dream, that she really didn’t encounter anyone on her walk home and had a quiet evening. She opened both eyes and sat up, a familiar golden gaze catching her from a dark form sitting in front of her door. She hadn’t been dreaming.

“I’m hungry.”

She rolled over in bed, her back to her new companion as she snuggled into her warm sheets.

“Go eat a little girl.”

He scoffed at her words as she heard him stand, she smiled.

“I can’t leave you here; you have to come with me.”

It was her turn to scoff as she turned just enough to stare up at him as he stood next to her bed.

“I’m not five I can be by myself here for a while. Besides, isn’t it kind of conspicuous, a psychic walking with a Cerberus? We would get caught for sure.”

He raised a hand to his head as he pinched the bridge of his nose. It was then she noticed his arm. It was perfectly fine. She sat up sharply to see all his wounds were gone, replaced with smooth pale scars. She reached up and grabbed his wrist to inspect the arm she had thought would be lost the night before.

“How…?”

He pulled his arm away and scratched at his collar.

“It’s just the way I was born; they used that to their advantage and turned me into Cerberus. The others were born normal and manufactured into what I am. I was the first…”

She looked past him to her cabinets as she ran her fingers through her tangled hair, she was a mess.

“Fix you something to eat here; I’ve got a few things but not a lot and nothing fancy. Just until we figure out a way to move about freely since I can’t be left alone.”

She shot him a dirty look as he walked over to see what she had.

“Don’t get an attitude it’s not because you’re incompetent it’s because you’re my keeper now.”

She blinked at him. He said it so nonchalantly but it made her blush. She remembered him lying on her, holding her close and licking her skin. She remembered tasting his blood as well.

“Cyn?”

She tore her gaze away from the sheets, he was staring at her strangely, she could feel the heat in her cheeks.

“I never told you my name.”

He cocked his head at her as he poured himself some cereal.

“You didn’t have to, I know a lot of things about you now, your blood told me many things. You know my name now too.”

She furrowed her brow, she couldn’t remember anything after tasting him, but something was telling her she knew more about him now.

“Your name is Kudo?”

He smiled.

“I know you probably don’t remember anything now, it’ll come back to you. Bonding is usually easier for the dog than the keeper. But it’s been so long since I’ve heard someone say my name.”

Cyn stood and went to her closet to find some clothes; she felt the conversation had gone far enough. She found a plain black t-shirt and a fresh pair of jeans and went to her bathroom to run a bath.

“Stay out of here ok? I’ll be out in a few.”

Kudo nodded, his mouth full of dry cereal since there was no milk in her room. Dairy was a rarity and hard to come by since it had to be refrigerated. She closed the door and turned off the water, slipping out of her clothes and sliding into the hot water with a sigh. It was Saturday so she didn’t have to work, but she had a feeling she was going to have a busy day. She washed herself and her hair well, dipping herself under the water entirely to wash away the suds. She came to the surface and wrapped her arms about her legs, resting her chin on her knees, unwilling to leave the warm water. Her mind went to the man who would probably eat her out of house and home. She ate only one meal a day, and a small one at that to keep herself from going completely broke. It was hard to live off of three dollars an hour but it was better than what most people did. What was she thinking bonding herself to him? He could destroy her in an instant. He was powerful, healed rapidly, had unnatural long life, and could take about any beating without dying or weakening. What was she going to do? She heard him lean against the bathroom door as he sat on her floor.

“What are you doing?”

She sank a little lower in the water; a little worried he was trying to sneak a peak.

“You’re calling me. I know you don’t realize it but you are and it’s making me anxious. You’re worried about something.”

He was right, she was worried, there was a question nagging at her that she was afraid to ask.

“Why….why did you kill your keeper?”

There was a long pause on the other side of the door. She wondered if she had angered him.

“When they first gave me this collar they threw me in a room with a large burly man. He was insane; he was cruel and loved the color of blood. I was untamed then, nearly inhuman and far more in touch with the beast inside me. He beat me until I was so badly hurt that I was broken, mentally and physically. That’s how Hades bonds a Cerberus to a Keeper. That’s how they teach us that we are under control.”

She watched the light play off the ripples in the water, wondering if the actions of his previous keeper had resonated against her fate just as the ripples before her did.

“I hated him; I wanted him to die so many times when we were on the hunt, when we faced a psychic that could destroy both him and me. I chased down innocent children and tore them to shreds because he wished it. But I think every dog has his limits, and he reached mine. When he did I tore out his throat and took much glee in doing so. When a Cerberus destroys his keeper the other Cerberus can feel it because the dog should die in that event. I didn’t, they didn’t understand that and they attacked me. I narrowly escaped and found myself lying in an alley wondering if my wounds would heal before I bled out. Cyn I’m glad you don’t remember, I’m glad you fell asleep instead of seeing what I’ve done. I’m very tainted.”

She slid out of the water and dried herself with a worn towel.

“It’s strange; your aura doesn’t reflect that. I can sense when people have done terrible things but I can’t feel or see any of that around you. Perhaps it’s the dog in you that blinds me.”

She pulled her clothes on and quickly brushed her hair, all the while Kudo lingered outside her door.

“So besides trying to figure out how we're going to be able to move around without seeming suspicious, what other plans do we have today?”

She opened the door to find him sitting on the floor next to the frame, a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

“I need to go see my old friend Sarah for a favor.”

Cyn picked up the cereal bowl from the floor and set it in the sink.

“And where does she live?”

Kudo took a long drag and leaned his head against the wall behind him as smoke slid from his lips in long ghostly tendrils.

“At Hades Corp.”

She blinked at him, he couldn’t possibly be serious.

“How the fuck are we supposed to get to her then? You’re wanted now! And the dogs can smell me a mile off!”

His gaze dropped as his fingers absentmindedly went to his collar.

“She’s the only one who can get this thing off me. While it’s on the other dogs can sense me, but if it’s gone I’m just a stray. I’ll be like I was before Hades found me.”

Cyn sighed, feeling a little foolish for raising her voice.

“Then what’s the plan? We can’t just march up to the front door and say ‘hi we’re here for Sarah’.”

He put out his cigarette on her floor and knitted his fingers together between his knees.

“And we have to go together. I’m not leaving you here and I can’t go alone.”

Cyn glanced at him as he smiled. She wasn’t the brains behind this whole offensive plan of his for sure. If they had to do something he would have to figure it out. If it were up to her they’d hide.

“I have an idea.”
