Part 2
That night I went to sleep with the stranger in my tent, normally in this cold weather I would have shared a tent with Corum. Kaiga and Raika were sharing and I knew that Corum would be cursing me in the morning complaining about how cold he had gotten. But it couldn’t be helped. Things got rather up close and personal for the red head and I due to me stripping us both of clothing and holding him close to warm him with my body heat.
However when he woke he didn’t seem to appreciate my efforts.
“What the hell were you thinking?! What did you do to me you pervert!?”
He yelled as he grabbed his clothes and stalked out of the tent hastily pulling them on.
“Nothing you ignorant brat!”
I called back as I finished pulling my jacket on and poked my head out into the cold and bright morning.
“I pulled you off of the freezing ground yesterday and spent most of last night checking to see if you were still alive! The best way to transfer heat is skin to skin!”
The young man turned to Corum looking exasperated.
“What..? He’s right…”
Corum shrugged. Still scowling the stranger eyed me over.
“Okay…I believe you…”
“Good..”
Grumpily I walked to the dead fire embers to start a new one for preparing breakfast. After several attempts at lighting some wood with my flint I gave up and threw it.
“Stupid damn thing!”
Corum laughed behind me.
“Rule number one. Don’t put Caspian in a bad mood in the morning. It makes him pissy for the rest of the day.”
“Caspian…”
I heard the young man mumble.
“Yeah…that’s my name..” Standing up I turned to face him. “Don’t you have one?”
He paused for a few moments and then chose to ignore my foul temper.
“….Eternal.”
I failed to hide the shock on my face and he frowned at me.
“What?”
“N…nothing.”
Picking up another piece of wood I sighed and tried lighting it. Eternal walked over, crouched next to me and had it on fire within a few seconds. He looked at me smugly.
“That any help..?”
“Yeah…thanks..”
I looked at him close up, trying to pick out the facial features that looked like they belonged on my old friend’s face. After a few moments I looked away, he reminded me of Abel and was quite obviously related to him. A wave of guilt washed over me so I cleared my throat and went to my bag taking out a pan and food supplies.
“Who’s up for bacon and eggs?”
“Oh god yes..” Corum’s moan almost sounded sexual as he thought of the food I’d just offered.
“Just bacon for me thanks.” Kaiga stepped out of his tent and smiled at me.
“Alright…Raika doesn’t even need to answer…I know he’ll want enough to feed about three people..”
Eternal laughed next to me, it was quite a boyish giggle and I couldn’t help but smile at him.
“You want some..?”
“Please…both..”
It wasn’t long before I was dishing out bacon and eggs onto four plates. I left my own in the pan seeing as we only carried enough cutlery for ourselves. Kaiga kicked the side of his tent and there was a groan from inside.
“Oy...Raika. Breakfast is ready..”
“BACON!”
Came the yell back, he was out of the tent in seconds only in his underwear with his hands out for his plate.
“You never change do you Raika..?”
“No…”
He wriggled his fingers excitedly as Kaiga handed him his plate.
“Aren’t you cold?”
“Don’t care…I have bacon..”
He chuckled as he started eating it. Eternal’s eyes were fixed on him so much I had to give hima gentle nudge.
“Don’t stare..”
“He….He’s so big…”
Turning to face me Eternal whispered.
“He’s like a giant..”
“He’s part God.”
I’d never seen anyone’s head turn so fast as he stared at Raika again.
“Arnen….right…?”
“Yeah.”
“He’s Raika?”
“Mmhmm.”
“Woooow. I learned about him in history…”
I smiled to myself as I remembered teaching about him…and then realised Eternal probably went to the school I used to teach at and looked thoughtful. I decided to wait until later on to ask him questions. After all…I had quite a few. Once Corum had finished with his plate he handed it to me and I dished out my own breakfast onto his plate. Nothing quite beats warm bacon and eggs when you’ve woken up in the winter.
“So...who are you guys?”
Eternal asked and looked around.
“We can’t tell you that..”
Kaiga pulled a face.
“Well you’re all fit and muscular…so your some sort of special team right?”
“Yeah…leave it at that for now.”
“Don’t mind him..”
I mumbled through a mouth full of egg.
“He’s mean to everyone, not just you.”
Kaiga pulled a face at me and laughed.
“We don’t know who this kid is yet, he could be anyone…even working for the enemy.”
“I’m not a kid..”
“He was unconscious Kaiga. No fire elemental lays out in the snow unless they’re attempting suicide.”
Eternal fidgeted uncomfortably and I took note of it, ignoring it for the time being so that I didn’t ask any embarrassing questions in front of everyone.
It wasn’t long before we had finished breakfast and had our tents packed away. Luckily we had found Eternal at the end of a mission during a time when we were going on one of our breaks. After telling him that we were walking about ten miles that day to a small town to rest at an Inn he agreed to come with us. Which I was thankful for, I wanted to make sure he stayed alive even though I had no idea who he was.
Throughout the day we took short breaks, I kept him fed, watered and occasionally checked to make sure he was warm enough. But even that wasn’t enough. He tired out pretty fast due to the cold air which was completely understandable.
“I don’t think I can walk much further..”
I caught him as he stumbled on a small rock.
“Whoa…okay…”
Shrugging my bag off of my back I held it up to Raika.
“Please? You’re the strongest here…you can manage my bag too right?”
“Of course..”
Smiling he took it from me.
“Thanks Raika. I owe you a drink.”
“That you do.” he chuckled.
“Hey…Eternal. Get on my back.”
“What?! But…that’s not fair…It’ll..”
“Just get on already. I’m getting cold standing around.”
Pausing for a few more moments Eternal decided against arguing with me and jumped up onto my back. I locked my arms under his thighs before setting off again. Kaiga muttered something about me really going soft making me sigh heavily. No matter how well they tried to fit into groups the Demons I have known have never seemed to rid themselves of their underlying selfishness. Its not like Kaiga could help it though, he’d been made that way.
We reached the town as light was beginning to dim, it was well within mid winter meaning that the sun would set during late afternoon rather than in the evening. Corum, of course, didn’t hesitate to choose the most expensive Inn he could find. The weather had just decided it didn’t like us as we walked up to the front door quickly escaping from the rainy streets to the warm dry Inn.
However when he woke he didn’t seem to appreciate my efforts.
