Chapter 2 - Set up...
"Daaaaad! You’ve ruined my life! Why can’t you get a girlfriend and leave my love life alone!" the little redheaded spitfire screamed through the door she had locked.
Lucian sighed and knew he was in trouble. Katie never whined or went through theatrics.
"That’s because your 13, Katie. You’re too YOUNG to have a love life. Point final! Especially not with a hormone riddled 16 year old Parker boy. I forbid it!"
His hackles rose as he thought of boys hands on his lovely daughter. He would kill him first.
"And as for my love life. leave it out of this. Its hard enough taking care of you girls... Now would you open the door and let me talk to you about this in a sensible way."
A shuffling was heard behind the door as it cracked open and a sullen faced little redhead looked up at him.
"But I really like him dad."
He sighed and opened his arms and let her walk into them and hugged her close.
"I know you like him sweetheart but he’s too old for you... Boys his age are too caught up in their hormones. I’ve heard stories about him. He’s terrorising all the mothers in town."
She started to cry and he sighed and knew he would regret it but got ready to negotiate.
"I'll tell you what sweetheart... If you find a nice, respectable boy to your liking... Closer to your age... I might consider letting him come here to the house for a supervised date."
He gulped at the though. He might have to buy himself a shotgun.
She looked up at him with hopeful eyes. "Do you mean it? You would let me date boys?"
He sighed softly and nodded. Hating that he had to resort to compromises. but he hated to see his daughter cry.
She looked at him right in the eye before she spoke
"Under one condition. You don’t breathe down our necks."
He laughed lightly "Now come on. Would I really do something like that?"
Yes... he would....
He sighed as she just put her hands on her hips and glared.
"Oh alright I promise not to scare them off. But if any of them try anything all bets are off."
She giggled and threw her arms around him and he laughed and gave her a sloppy kiss on the cheek and tickled her ribs.
Well ad least that argument had been solved in a rather good way. How many more years before teenage hood were over? Then he would have to deal with his other daughter. Thankfully she was only 7 years old. Still a few years before she was a teen.
He looked at his daughter with pride. Katie was an adorable little redhead who was only now starting to blossom into womanhood. His heart gave a pang at how she resembled her mother. Her curly hair down to her shoulders, her green eyes still a bit red and puffy from crying. Her tiny button nose sprinkled with freckles. He was sure soon enough he’d have to fight off boys with a baseball bat.
"How about Daddy makes you some chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. With lots of whipped cream" He knew that would end any further arguments that day. Both his daughters loved pancakes.
She grinned back at him. "You have a deal! I’ll take a shower while you make the pancakes."
She ran into the bathroom. And he turned towards his younger daughter’s room ready to wake her up for the morning pancakes.
As the door creaked open he peaked through and saw that she was still dead to the world. He walked over to the bed and sat at the edge of it looking at his daughter deep in sleep. She was so beautiful. Unlike Katie, She looked more like him. Her black hair was straight and tousled with sleep. He knew her eyes however would be a deep blue like her mother. He shook her gently. "Caitlyn... Wake up sweetie... I’m making pancakes and thought you might like to help me crack the eggs."
Her eyes sleepily opened and she smiled "You promise I can help?"
Her grinned and tickled her ribs "Sure thing. You’re my number one cook helper. How could I ever make pancakes without you."
She giggled and bounced off the bed with excitement.
He smiled to himself as he walked towards the kitchen. Even though sometimes his daughters could cause him grief, He really did love them. They were his life. He only hoped he was doing a good enough job. Ever since their mother had died he felt at a loss. It had been 2 years ago and he wasn’t broken up with grief as he had been then but sometimes he wondered if his daughters might need the gentle touch of a woman in the house.
He noticed a light blinking on his answering machine and wondered who could be calling him so early in the morning.
Walking to the machine he pressed the button and heard the cheery voice of his cousin Kelley.
“Hey you! You must still be asleep. Listen, I’m having a party tonight and your coming. Don’t use the excuse that you don’t have a babysitter, Heather will be over at 6 to take care of the kids. Wear something nice, there’s going be some nice ladies at the party. Ciao!”
Lucian groaned. Kelley was one of his favourite family members but she was a meddlesome matchmaker. There was no way he could get out of this though. When she made up her mind. Nothing could move her. He would have to grin and bear it.
