Ages and Necklaces

Jordan stared out of the small window located above his bed in the small room he shared with two other boys. The orphanage couldn’t afford to have the children in their own rooms. They also couldn’t afford to keep the older ones till they got on their feet. They had to send them out with a small amount of money and pray that they make it in the world. It was hard on everyone, but this time would be the worst. It was four minutes till midnight, Jordan’s birthday. He was the kindest, sweetest, and most helpful around the orphanage and he didn’t take anything in return. All of the little ones loved him, bigger kids adored him, teens admired him, and the adults wished he were their kid. The saddest day to come was only 24 hours and three minutes away.

He sighed. I’m going to miss everyone, even little Kyler, as annoying as he can be. I wish the orphanage had more money though. These guys are going to grow so much the bed frame will break. Jordan laughed at the image that popped into his head. He brushed his shaggy reddish brown hair out of his face with his fingers and stood up. He looked at the two boys, fast asleep in their beds. Justin had just an inch between his feet and the foot board and poor Charles had to have his footboard cut down and his twin mattress elongated with the bottom of another twin mattress. These monstrously tall 15 year olds even snored like monsters. Jordan laughed quietly. He was about as tall if not millimeters taller that Justin.

Jordan’s hazel eyes glanced at the digital clock that sat on his nightstand. 11:59.One more minute, or 20 seconds, something around there, left. Again he sighed. He wished he could stay and help the caretakers with the younger children since they had their hands full with the babies, but they had no room for him. They were moving Kyler to a bed made with guard rails since he was only one years old and moved around more than a shark has to in order to breathe, and moving the kid that was supposed to have the rails to his bed, because he put rails on it a few hours ago, and moving one baby from a crib that has two babies in it to the crib kyler had. A very confusing thing but it just means that there is no room and he has to find a place of his own before the storm in five days.

Walking back towards the window he stared at the moon. He always loved the feeling of content that spread through him as he looked at the round, silver disk that hung from the sky at night. Sometimes when he looked at it, he could see something shine off of its surface. It was always a faint, barely there type of thing though, so he thought he was delusional because of how late it was. He finally decided to go to sleep. Although he’d be in an awkward position due to the rails he had set up.

Long fingers glided over the thick metal of the necklace his father had given him before his death. A crescent moon in a circle attached to a Celtic knot that was connected to the loop, holding the pendant to the chain. “When you meet your other half, the crescent will become whole. This may be girlie but your uncle Liten gave one to your brother, except his has a moon with the knots in the crescent. This one though used to be mine, given to me by my uncle. It never lies to you and whoever it chooses will be accepted by your whole family. Even if male, you may bear children, so it doesn’t matter if your other half is male,” his father said. He then talked to Malen about scarring things, such as the birds and the bees, and about love, life, goals, and hopes. They talked until Malen fell asleep in a ball in his father’s lap. He was tucked in, the lights turned off, and Malen’s door was shut as his father walked out of the room. He was 14 when he saw his father for the last time.

Since then Malen had kept the necklace on him at all times, it was always tucked in his shirt away from hands that could try to steal it, and tied in a small waterproof bag around his wrist when he bathed. He didn’t want it rusty in anyway and if it got dirty he would clean it himself instead of taking it to the castle jeweler. He couldn’t risk anything concerning the only thing he had of his father.

He switched topics and started thinking about his mother’s proposal. He really should leave it to his siblings; he was tiny compared to the rest of them, tall but not even close to his brother. He also wasn’t as smart his sisters, especially Jizelle and Kulta. He wasn’t even that good with politics like Mwezi could be when she felt like it, and plus she had a good voice. There wasn’t much he could do.

Malen sighed, “I should just leave and let them go against each other. Jizelle though is the more than likely going to become queen. But I’m not sure if this Earth man is her other half.” He walked away from the balcony connected to his room by tall, glass double doors. His necklace catching the rays from the sun that gave the moon its light, and reflecting it back towards Earth, as it had previous times before.

His feet carried him through the halls towards the kitchen. Through the doors of the dining room he could hear his mother talking to Jizelle, “He has to go soon.” Assuming he knew what they were talking about he walked faster, catching only one more sentence as he left the area. “I know mother. We’ll send him in a few days. That way he won’t have a chance to fight against us as we send him there,” but he missed, “Oh I know he’ll absolutely love Earth! He’s been wanting to go there since I told him about all the wonderful things they had. Too bad he’s been a chicken when it came time to leave through the portal. You should have been there that day mother, it was hilarious. Although, it was so adorable when he denied that he was crying. Oh how I miss my baby brother’s chubby little cheeks.” He completely missed the fact that it was a surprise trip for him, and that they didn’t want him gone.

Malen snuck through the door to the kitchen, heading for the pantry and grabbing some bread, cheese, bananas, kiwis, and got a jug of water from the cooler they had for all the things that needed to stay cold. He quietly ran back to his room where he found two bags, stuffed the food in one, and shoved a few articles of clothing in another. When finished he practically sprinted to the side of the castle where the portal was located. He would force his fears away and go to Earth before they could shoot him off to some deserted place. Malen walked up to the black wall, called out, “Earth!” as loud as he could, closed his eyes and ran into the darkness.

I know, you hate me so much right now. But some part of you still loves me, I hope. Anyway I have websites for the pendants the brothers have and I hope you guys noticed, the oldest son gets the pendant from one of his uncles and the youngest gets it from his father, just cause I made it this way.

I don’t own these, just found them.
