It was a small town maybe 30 people lived here and everyone knew everyone. I stopped by the general store to do my weekly shopping. I walked in, kicked the snow off my boots and went towards the canned food section. Once I had everything I needed I went toward the front of the store. The store owner was a tall man in his late 60’s with graying hair and a beard to match. I had known Earl since I was about five years old; he was like an uncle to me.
“Hello Earl” I said to him as he started to ring me up.
“Hello Katherine, I’m sorry to hear bout your folks” he said sincerely giving my hand a light pat.
“Its ok, I’m sure their in a better place now.” I said trying to seem ok with it.
“What did the doctor say about the accident?” he said bagging my groceries
“Bear attack he said, but I don’t think so” I said handing him the 42 dollars I owed him.
“Well if you ever need anything you just let me know.” He said patting my hand again.
“I will” I said grabbing my bags and heading for the door.
“Take care” he said as he waved me a ‘good bye’.
“I will” I said as I walked out the door.
As I walked out the door I bumped into a man I hadn’t seen before and spilled my groceries out into the snow. “I’m sorry” I said as I tried to pick up my things. He bent over and started to help me put everything back into their bags. “Its ok” he said putting my can of coffee grounds into the bag. “You know that stuff will kill ya” he said in a joking tone.
I looked up at him as I stood with my groceries; I now noticed he was taller then me by about eight inches which put him around 5’ 10”, had long honey blonde hair that fell to about mid-back and the palest blue-grey eyes I had ever seen. I couldn’t seem to stop starring; he seemed to notice and smiled at me which caused me to blush, sometimes I wish my skin wasn’t as white as paper.
“I haven’t seen you around here before” I said shoving my groceries into the back seat trying to hide my blush.
“I new around here, my name is Adrian” he said offering me his hand.
“My names Katherine, nice to get some new blood around here” I said putting my hand in his and giving it a shake. His hand was so warm in mine almost hot considering it was freezing out. I realized I was still holding his hand in mine and instantly blushed again. Damn why am I acting like a schoolgirl with this guy? I thought to myself. I released his hand and started to climb into my truck.
“Maybe ill see you around town again” he said as I shut the door to my truck.
“Would you like to come over, I could use the company.” I said then instantly regretted it. What the hell are you thinking he is way out of your league? I thought, mentally kicking myself.
“That sounds great, where do you live?” he said giving me a charming smile.
“Just up the mountain, don’t worry you’ll find it, see you around seven?” I said nervously
“It’s a date” he said waving me off as I started my truck and drove away.
