Chapter 2
“MMM...Amy, you have my undying love.” I said cheekily as another big bite of yummy cookie was shoved into my mouth.
Amy looked up at me with an amused little smile, “Wow..your love comes pretty cheap, should I give that recipe to Paul?” she quipped. My eyes widened as I began to choke, while I frantically shook my head no. Amy threw back her head and laughed at me as she watched me suck down diet Dr. Pepper to dislodge the wayward cookie .
I mock glared at her, “You are so mean.” At which she just laughed again, sounding off with an evil cackle.
I know she was just kidding..but that was almost no joke. Paul Kemps was a one of our local EMT's and also a known ladies man. Cute in an all American kind of way, he had a smile that tended to have women fall at his feet, or at least their panties. For the past 6 months he had somehow got it in his head that he had to have me, that I would make a nice notch on his proverbial bedpost. He still hasn't figured out that it wasn't going to happen with me, and it has become somewhat of a nuisance. Amy thought it was hilarious...damn her.
We were sitting in the break room finishing our nutritional snack of cookies and Dr. Pepper, when the door swung open. Betty, another night shift nurse stuck her head in the door and said, “Dr. Maslova...we have a MVA coming in and the EMT's say he seizing. Dr. Cross wants you on it. “Thanks Betty.” I said as I stood up and began to throw away my trash.
I looked over at Amy to see her doing the same and asked, “You done?” She shook her head , “Yeah..I might as well, I don't want to sit here by myself.” She smiled as she slipped her feet back into her shoes.
I walked out toward the double doors where the ambulances unloaded to wait while Amy hurried past me toward the exam rooms. “I'll get room 3 ready for ya.” she said as she went. Thinking quickly I called after her, “Hey Amy make sure there's an intubation tray ready in there just in case.” Throwing her hand up she answered, “I'm on it.”
I didn't know exactly what we were dealing with but I liked to be ready. I looked down to check my watch..and noticed that it read quarter after eleven. When I saw Betty coming to wait with me I asked, “Hey what was the ETA on this one?”
“They were 5 minutes out when we got the call, so they should be here any time now.” she answered. With a nod I reached over to the cart by the doors and grabbed a pair of latex gloves out of the dispenser. As I was pulling them on, I began to hear the distant wail of an ambulance as it drew nearer to the hospital.
Out of the corner of my eye I caught a flash of red and thought, “No, no, no, no,no....” but despite my silent pleas to the heavens above, sure enough that flash of red belonged to the head of one Marc Pearce as he walked over to stand beside me. Just great.....
He reached over to grab his own pair of gloves. “Go on about your business Rachel, I've got this.” he said in an haughty tone as he fit them over his hands.
I could feel the muscle in my cheek jump as I refused to take the bait. Instead of the nasty reply I wanted to lay on him, I looked at him and smiled sweetly. “Oh that's alright Marc, Dr. Cross specifically asked me to handle this one.” His bushy red eyebrows drew together in agitation, and I knew there wasn't much that he could say to that. Taking a moment to enjoy the feeling of being able to shut him up. Take that..ha!… So sue me, I was feeling a bit smug.
In the next 10 seconds the ambulance we had been waiting on pulled up to the double doors and came to a screeching halt. Lights still flashing, both doors burst open and out jumped the first of two EMT's that had been working on the patient. I could feel my pulse pick up a bit as I mentally began to prepare for any situation that might come out of the back of that ambulance.
