Chapter 2: It’s Scary
Once the two best friends walked into the school they were bombarded with their friends and they were separated from one another they told each that they would see on another in class.
Zack was dragged away by his soccer teammate and all he could do was smile as they walked to the front of the school and out to the courtyard.
Zack smiled as his good friend Jon went on and on about his summer vacation in Hawaii. Jon was about the same height as Zack and the same build only a bit more muscular and had shaggy brown hair and brown eyes. They sat at their normal table in the center and all Zack could do was nod as Jon just went on and on.
While Zack was listening to his friend’s summer vacation, Shawn was with her friend Ashton, she had long brown hair and was a little taller than Shawn with brown eyes as well and she went on and on about her summer vacation in the south of France. Shawn just smiled as she listened to her friend as they walked to their favorite spot by the fountain in front of the school.
Shawn just kept smiling as her good friend went on and on about how much of a tan she got and how many hot French boys there were. Shawn just shook her head at her friend that she loved dearly and always wondered why she hung out with her if she couldn’t get a word in most of the time.
Once the bell rang everyone rushed to their first class of the day, Zack and Shawn were still listening to their two friends ramble on and on about their summer vacations until they reached their classroom. They gave each other a look as if to say “Save ME!!!” but they didn’t have to because once Ashton and Jon saw each other they smiled and began to talk and walked off in a different direction. Zack and Shawn looked at each other and laughed.
“I still don’t know how those two started dating,” Shawn said as she walked into the classroom with Zack behind her.
“Yeah it’s scary, both love to hear each other talk especially themselves,” he said with a laugh as they took their seats next to each other.
“I agree with you there,” she said with a smile as the morning announcements came over the intercom. Zack took out a piece of paper and began to write, “So how is it we have the same classes this year?” he folded the paper up and looked to make sure their teacher wasn’t looking and passed it over to Shawn. She just smiled and shook her head and opened up the paper and read what he wrote, and stifled a small laugh she decided to write back, “I don’t know but you have to admit it’s pretty nice,” she folded the paper back up and passed it back to him.
“Yeah true, so what club do you have after school today?”
“I have National Honor Society, what about you?”
“I have Drama Club then have to meet up with coach and Erin for soccer try-outs this year,”
“I still can’t believe you made co-captain!”
“I know I’m in shock still to tell you the truth but you are gonna be there for the games right?”
“Have I ever let you down?”
“No you haven’t and that’s why you’re my oldest and best friend, haha”
“You are just too funny but that just adds to your charm, so any girls you plan on chasing after this year?”
“What charm? I don’t know what you’re talking about haha, jk and yeah there’s this one girl we’ll see where it goes with her. What about you any boys catch your eye?”
“No not really but we’ll see what the year brings,”
They continued to pass notes throughout the day and at lunch they sat with their friends catching up on what they did on their summer vacation. Zack got to talking with Erin who is the other captain and a senior this year, Erin was your surfer looking type shaggy blonde hair and baby blue eyes and a body that girls love on a guy the perfect guy as every one would call him next to Zack.
When lunch was over Zack and Shawn went to their last class of the day which so happened to be P.E. Shawn couldn’t help but smile when they walked into the gym and saw that everyone was sitting in the bleachers so they could get their lockers in the changing rooms and for the teachers to get everyone on their attendance.
Zack and Shawn climbed to the top of the bleachers and sat down next to each other, “So I didn’t expect you to take P.E. your junior year,” Zack told her as he pulled out his notebook and a pen.
“Yeah well I need to keep this body in shape somehow not all us wake up at the crack of dawn and run five miles,” she said as they both laughed.
“Hey I don’t get up at the crack of dawn I get up BEFORE the crack of dawn thank you very much,” they both laughed as their teacher/coach started to take roll. Once everyone was called she began to assign lockers, calling up the girls first Shawn got up and walked down the bleachers and stood in front of the little desk where their teacher was sitting.
Their teacher, Ms. Drago was a nice lady also the coach of the girl’s soccer team. She had short dirty blonde curly hair bright green eyes and wasn’t too skinny nor too plump either. She looked up at the girls already knowing a few from her team and the rest from seeing them at the other games. She knew Shawn very well having seen her everywhere with Zack. When it was her turn to get a lock Ms. Drago asked, “So have you and Zack started dating yet?”
Shawn gave a small laugh and said, “No ma’am, we’re just friends and that’s all we’ll ever be,”
“Well you can’t fight what you feel Shawn and I know for a fact that you two will be together soon just you wait,” she told the young lady giving her the lock with the combination and locker number. She took the lock and walked into the girl’s locker room after a minute or two she found her locker and put her lock on it after copying down her combination on her hand. She climbed back up the bleachers and took her same spot next to Zack as saw that he was writing and to her it looked like a poem she knew that they didn’t have any homework in any classes at least that she knew of. Before she could ask Ms. Drago called for the boys to come up, Zack closed up his notebook and put it back in his bag before as he got up he smiled at her and said, “Be right back,” and he walked down to Ms. Drago.
He was first in line to get his lock, and Ms. Drago smiled at him, “Well there he is our new co-captain and our first junior captain at that,” she said giving him his lock.
“Thanks, Ms. Drago, yeah it still feels like a dream, to be honest,” he said smiling back at her.
“I know that you will do a great job and lead us to another State Championship,” she with a smile.
“And that’ll be our third one; I hope we can do it,”
“I know you will I have a good feeling about this year,” she said with a bigger smile now and he laughed a little and walked off in the direction of the boys locker room. He couldn’t help but think that Ms. Drago’s feelings were always right, but right now he choose to shake it off as he searched for his locker. He didn’t take long his locker was in the first row and after memorizing the combination he put the lock on his locker and walked out and over to the bleachers. He climbed back up and took his seat next to Shawn, “Miss me?” he asked pulling out his notebook again.
“Always,” she said with a smile and wondered what he was writing again. She wanted to ask but he was so deep in thought she didn’t want to disturb him she might as well ask him later as she pulled out her book, Into The Wild she began to read where she left off.
Zack knew that Shawn would ask him what he was writing and all he has to do is tell her that it’s a poem or a story that he’s been working on. But the truth is that he was working on a song he had the tune in his head and on his guitar he just needed words and for some reason everything started to flow. He would tell her eventually but right now is just not a good time.
School was finally over and the two friends parted ways, Shawn was going to meet Zack at the field like always and wait for the try outs to be over with. Today they were just having a meeting and tomorrow the drills would start.
Zack made his way over to the field and met with Coach Boone a man about in his early fifties and in good shape he always seemed to have a buzz cut you would never see him with hair longer than that. Boone had a stern face but kind brown eyes he could be mean if he had to but he was just as understanding as anyone. Erin was already there getting his gear one and Zack took a seat next to him and started to get his gear out of his bag and then to gear up.
“So how many we got on the list this year?” Zack asked as he took of his shoes and socks.
“We’re looking at about thirty guys trying out for varsity and only varsity,” Erin explained as he strapped his right shin guard on.
“Nobody for J.V., hmm, well we’ll see where it goes,” Zack told him as he started to strap on his left shin guard.
“Boone says that we only have five spots for varsity and six spots for J.V. some will still be on the team but only on second string,” Erin told him as he started to pull up his socks.
“Makes sense do you know anyone on the list that’s any good?” Zack asked as he pulled up his own socks and started to put on his cleats.
“There is one but, I’m not so sure if he’s that good or not,” Erin said tying his cleats up.
“Let me guess he’s a one man team type player?” Zack asked him after he laced and tied his cleats
“You could say that,” Erin said as they both got up and went to stretch.
“So why are we gearing up if there’s not really a try out today?” Zack asked him.
“I don’t know Boone wanted us to I’m guessing,”
“Doesn’t make any sense unless he was us to do just our basic warm ups see who can handle that part,”
“That could be true, are you still running at the crack ass of dawn?” Erin asked with a small laugh.
“Okay, I get up BEFORE the crack ass of dawn and yes I still run five miles everyday then on weekends I do push ups, sit ups, pull ups, and then I lift,”
“Wow, you do work out, yet you don’t eat right,” They both laughed as they saw some of their other teammates join them. They all sat around and stretched then, to kill time to wait for the thirty guys to come and try out they went through some of their on drills. Such as, pass and go, long distance passes, penalty kicks, corner kicks, and goal kicks. After a few more drills Boone blew his whistle and singled for the two captains to meet him by their bench.
The two boys jogged over and stood before him, “Alright gentlemen it’s almost that time where we separate the men from the boys, here comes your guys,” he said as all three of them looked to their side and saw a bunch of guys coming towards them. The one leading them Zack didn’t want to believe that the one guy that put him in the hospital without a chance to walk again was coming towards him with a big smile on his face.
