A Memory Worth Something
Chapter II
A Memory Worth Something
School was always a drag for Mika, but it’s not like she had a choice. The girl went to a private school for the rich kids, and she was the one that was especially smart and got in through a scholarship. She sighed, brushing her hair behind her shoulder.
Even though she was one of the smartest students in her grade, she was nothing like what a geek would be. She was a trouble maker and she loved to create trouble – though, it wasn’t purposeful. People who were rude to her – she was rude back. It was only natural for Mika, since she wasn’t the type to say sorry.
Regardless, she was very smart.
Mika sighed. For the majority of the day, Mika slept but it didn’t affect her grades at all. After the classes, she made her way towards the university that was about a ten minute bus ride from her high school. It was a daily thing to visit Shou after her classes and the two of them would make their way towards her home, sometimes occasionally hanging out at a café or an arcade.
When the bus came to her stop, she jumped off the stairs and rushed towards the gates of the university. Mika smiled to herself, pulling her backpack over her shoulders and searched for her friend.
Her brown eyes searched for the familiar face. Normally, he would be waiting around the area. “AH!” She smiled to herself, raising an eyebrow as she saw a tall head popping out of the rest of the crowd. Mika quickly made her way over towards him, smiling to herself.
When the crowd thinned out, she stopped in his tracks. Shou had his arm wrapped around a girl that stood probably to his shoulders and she had her arm wrapped around his waist. The two of them were laughing and chatting away. From Mika’s point of view, she looked beautiful with the blonde hair trailing down her back and the denim skirts. She wore a halter top and from where Mika was standing, she wore makeup that brought out her best features.
She frowned, turning away from the scene that gave her the urge to hurl. The girl sighed, shaking her head from side to side and made her way back towards the bus stop.
“AH. OW.”
Technically, it was her fault. She wasn’t paying attention when she ran into several university students. “Watch where you’re going, will you?” She snapped, glaring at the men that fell over.
“Excuse me? You knocked me over, you cunt.” The man snapped – certainly he was the kind with a short temper.
“WHAT? You should have been watching where you were going, you bastard. Here I am a little girl, walking around, and you.. YOU TAKE UP SO MUCH MASS that you can’t help but KNOCK me over??” She snapped back easily, placing her hands on her hips, frowning at the university student.
“Knocked YOU over? You knocked ME over. I think you might need to get a double check!” He frowned at the brave girl’s retort.
“You know what, I hate men like you! You have no decency to say sorry!”
“SAY SORRY? YOU WEREN’T EVEN WATCHING WHO WAS IN FRONT OF YOU. YOU SHOULD BE THE ONE TO SAY SORRY. NOT ME.” The university student stepped up, the two of them pretty much an inch from each other’s face.
“Fuck you! Get your priorities straight!” She snarled and her brows furrowed at his comment.
“You little bitch!” The student growled, grabbing her dark locks, yanking her against him.
“OW!”
“Shut the fuck up, you little cunt.” He snarled, “You and that smart mouth of yours will always get you into trouble! I should teach you a lesson.”
Without a warning, the man suddenly yelled out in pain, releasing his grip on the younger girl. Mika stumbled backwards, blinking several times, and saw the familiar figure standing behind the other university student. She unconsciously smiled
“If you hurt even a hair on her, I swear, I’ll kill you…” Shou growled, his nails digging deeply into the man’s arm. “Just get out of my sight.” He released his grip and the man picked up his book bags and quickly walked off with his friends, muttering angry words.
“Shou…” Mika smiled widely, seeing that he saved her once more. “Tha-”
“ARE YOU STUPID?” He snapped at her, right before she was able to thank him. “DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TROUBLE YOU GET YOURSELF INTO BY SNAPPING AT OTHER PEOPLE?” Shou grunted in frustration, not even caring that there were others staring at the couple.
“But, I’m always visiting you…” She spoke up in a small voice, slightly embarrassed by the gathering crowd.
“Damn it, Mika. I’m so freaking tired of you always getting into unnecessary troubles!” He ran his hand through his messy hair, not sure what to say anymore. “I… I don’t want to see you for a while. Please just get out of here.” With that comment, he turned his back on her, walking off with the other girls following him. Shou never looked back.
She stood there dumbfounded, not sure what to do next. The two of them never got into an argument. They always had just innocent fun. He was like the older brother that always took care of her, but… she never expected him to get so angry.
Mika gave an embarrassed laugh before she ran past the gates of the university. She made her way back on the bus and sat there, staring off into space.
Later at night, the Shou’s cell phone was ringing off the roof. “WHAT?” He snapped.
“Dude, calm down…”
Shou sighed, shaking his head from side to side, “Sorry. Didn’t mean it…What’s up?” He leaned back in his seat, his free hand clicking away on his mouse while his eyes were focused on the computer screen.
“Mika didn’t come home. Is she over there?”
“Um… no…” He spoke slowly, frowning just a little. “Wh… She didn’t go home? Are you sure she’s just not moping in her room?”
“No. She’s not in there. She’s not in the showers. She’s not at her friends’ houses…. I can’t find her at all.” It was her brother on the other line, worried about his little sister.
“Shit. Okay. I’ll go look for her…” Shou cursed at himself as he shut his cell phone shut. He quickly slipped on his hoodie and jeans and ran out of the apartment room, and literally flew down the stairs searching for the lost girl.
He dialed her number several times. It kept on ringing. Shou sighed, trying to find her. His first destination was the café they were always hanging out at, but she was nowhere to be found. The arcade was the next, but there were only geek boys playing their Tekken and InitialD racing games. Shou groaned, running his longer fingers through his messy hair and thought hard of the places that the two of them would always hang out.
His next find was the library but it was closed. Shou never stopped calling her and her cell phone was never turned off regardless of how many times he attempted to call her. Tokyo was such a big city, his chances of finding one girl out of millions and millions of people would be slim to nothing.
“Wah… there are so many stars out tonight…” He turned his attention to the couple walking by, looking up at the sky.
Then it clicked in his head.
Shou made a quick sprint towards the Eitai Bridge. It wasn’t too far from where they lived, maybe a good fifteen minute drive without traffic, but Shou was too panicked for the girl to think about taking a cab. For him, his legs felt like they could run faster than the fastest car in the world.
His running came to a slow walk as he approached the riverbed. He looked around; hoping to see some lone figure walking around and ahead of him was a recognizable silhouette. “MIKA!” Shou sprinted with all his remaining energy after her and she turned around at his shout.
“W-what are you doing here?” She blinked a few times, wiping away the tears in her eyes.
“I WAS LOOKING FOR YOU.” He snapped at her as he attempted to catch his breath. Yelling certainly didn’t help at all. He bent over, resting the palm of his hand on his knee, taking in deep breaths. “God. YOUR BROTHER… He…called me freaking out about where you were.” Shou used the sleeves of his shirt to wipe away the sweat running down his face. “I was so scared that you ran away, I didn’t know what to do. I searched the arcade, the café, the library…”
Mika took his hand, placing it on her cheek. “I’m sorry…I was just…” She bit her lower lip, not sure what to say. She’s never seen Shou so panicked before. “I went to visit you today at the university and your arms were wrapped around this… really pretty girl’s shoulder and her arms were wrapped around yours!” She bit her lower lip once more, frowning as she remembered what happened today.
“Oh…” Shou sighed, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug, “She was just a friend…”
“You liar. You liar. You laughed like you never did with me!” She cried out, punching his back as he hugged her. “Did you know how much it hurt when you said you didn’t want to see to me for a while?”
“I’m sorry…”
“We were always together, and when you went off to college, everything changed. You’re always hanging out with pretty girls and always flirting around…” She cried, trying to dry out her eyes.
“I’m sorry…” He embraced her tighter, his breath returning to it’s normal rate.
“How did you find me?” She pulled away, blinking a few times through her puffy eyes.
“Ah… Well, I saw this couple, and the girl said, ‘there are so many stars out tonight’, and then that reminded me of that night in the park…” Shou smiled just a little, imitating Mika for a moment, “‘Wha, all the stars are gone…’ and then I said…”
“Because they’re all in your eyes,” Mika smiled shyly remembering the comment he made to her many years ago.
Shou laughed quietly to himself, nodding just a little, “Yeah…”
The two of them fell silent as they walked along the river side. Mika looked up at the star filled sky and smiled to herself.
“I didn’t mean to say what I said today…” He muttered, scratching the back of his head, trying to get the words out, “It’s just.. sometimes I get scared that you’re seriously going to get hurt one day.” Shou sighed, and glanced over at the shorter girl standing next to him.
He reached over and took her hand. Their fingers intertwined with each others and the two of them made their way slowly back to their house.
When they reached the house, Shou gave Mika a gentle kiss on the lips. “Thank you… for fining me tonight.” She smiled, looking away from him. Without saying anything, he gave her another kiss. She felt electricity running down her spine as their lips touched.
The door slowly crept opened as Shou pulled away from the kiss and a pair of sharp brown eyes glared at Shou, causing him to flinch just a little. Mika turned around, “AH! ONII-CHAN!” She grimaced, completely forgetting about him.
“Do you know what time it is?!” He glared at Shou. Though it showed annoyance there was still relief. He was grateful that his little sister was found. “Get in here.”
“Ah… Um, good night… Shou.” She turned towards her childhood friend and smiled faintly.
“Woof.” He grinned, waving good night to the girl.
